Is having your tires aligned like launching a rocket?

Our 2008 prius has been a great car so far, however after hitting a pot hole it seems to pull to the left a little. It also seems to do it more aggressively when applying the brakes.

I think this might be a tire alignment problem and want to have it corrected, but like most things am a little concerned that I will take it in, pay some money and then there will be little to no improvement.

For most things car related I think that the dealership in our area is pretty good. Their mechanics seem to know what they are doing, however I think that most mechanics look down on things like vehicle alignment and are more interested in engine design, working, and electronic components. Am I wrong here?

In the past when I have gotten my tires aligned it is usually at a tire shop and it seems like they always grab the guy who was just taking out the trash to align my wheels. Maybe he is the best at it and like to take out the trash?

So here is the question. How do I evaluate a place to decide if they will do a good tire alignment? Should be able to get before and after readings of the tire alignment?

Should I inspect anything else before having them aligned as there might be something else causing the pulling?

BTW there are ~ 13K on the car and I do rotate my tires every 5K. They are 42psi front and 40psi in rear.

    Thanks

it has been reported on here, i do not know the original source of the reference, but the prius has a 1 year or 20,000 mile (it might be less, it might be more, i won't know until someone posts the actual reference) alignment warranty. this is because the way the prius is loaded on the ship for transport to the united states.

try driving up to your service bay, don't say anything about a pothole :) and see if they will just give you a free alignment...

i did it once. and it worked

don't get automatically discouraged just because i said 20,000 miles.. try it anyway. if the service advisisor or his supervisor
won't do it, then no money out of your pocket, you just drive off without anything done

the only other things you can check before having it done is the balance of the tires, the brakes (if it pulls during braking) and to make sure the air pressure is the same left and right (i think), and to center the steering wheel ?? (they just do that when you get an alignment i wonder if people center their steering wheels with no alignment???)

I also had some pulling to the left on my 2007. The usual causes (besides an underinflated tire on the pulling side) are usually either an alignment problem or a tire problem. In my case, correcting the front camber got rid of the pulling problem.

If you take it for an alignment, the shop should give you a printout of the alignment readings before and after adjustment.

    Hi Steve,

If you can find a shop that specializes in wheel alignment, that increases the probability that the work will be taken seriously. They will also be able to use shims to adjust the rear wheel alignment if needed.

Yes, the computer printout should show before and after measurements.

go to the dealer since you're still in alignment warranty period. get the printouts, then take it for a test drive. if you're not happy, bring it right back and tell them it's not fixed.

Thanks for all the info. The TSB is really nice to see. It feels like you have an ace in the hole. Is there some place that we can get a hold of these or are they hard to come by. I would guess hard to come by or at least you would have to pay for a subscription to somewhere.

The reason that I wonder is if there is TSB that applies to the 2008 model. If I go in and get it fixed but the dealership just says that this TSB does not apply to the 2008 model.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Steve,

techinfo.toyota.com is your friend, and costs $10 for a one-day subscription; $50 for one month. When you have access you can download all sort of technical documentation (including the New Car Features Manual which provides "theory of operations" - start with 2004 which provides full info on 2G, then look at subsequent years to understand minor differences from year to year), training docs, and repair manual info to your heart's content.

get it done before the freebie is up.

I have an 07 which kinda of pulled either to the left or right at times, it wasnt perfect. Had it fixed for the most part free of charge, and had the alarm activated at the same time here about 6 months ago probably.

I however clipped a curb not to long ago, and it's a little out of of whack, but will sit on it till the next service at 20k.

just do it, make sure they give you a read out of the numbers
