Yea, I don't know why they take the liberty of interjecting themselves into something that should be none of their business, but if you owe money on your car, they will NOT give you the refund -- they will give it to your bank. Maybe that's not a big deal to most people, but I too just bought the wrong agreement (see above), and I wanted the money back to buy the new agreement. They said tough luck if I still owe money on my car. Luckily mine was paid off, so I got the refund $$.

They also wanted to charge me $25 for the refund, which Troy managed to get waived, as I was buying a new agreement (or because I misunderstood the original terms, not sure which). Both the refund and the new agreement are still in process -- we'll see how it goes.

Going from the 7/100/0 Plat to the 7/75/0 Plat saved me around $300. Since it really is only 4-years of additional coverage (not 7), the lower mileage made more sense for me. Getting $300 back for mileage I will never use was nice.

In your case, it looks like you will have about 88,000 miles on the car after 3 years -- so 6/100 will probably be the best fit, and will get you coverage past 36,000 miles. You will save money over the original inflated agreement, and the reduction of the plan by a year. I'd say it was a good choice.

Understand that because of the mileage you will be putting on the car, you will most likely only get an additional 4 or 5 months of protection beyond the 3 years... Not 6 years total. Of course you are probably going for miles, not years, and you will still be saving money!

Cancelling your VSA will not affect your monthly payments. It is just like you paid a principal amount on the loan, and it will only affect the time the vehicle loan will be paid in full.

As far as if it was a good decision, keep in mind that VSA's are basically a insurance policy, and their price reflects the amount of repairs that need or have been done on those types of vehicles. Typically your Toyota's are pretty steady, but prices can rise over the years, and the difference may not be what you originally expected when you purchase another one.

So, I also bought the extended warranty when we bought the car (a little over a month ago). The dealer charged me $1595. The question I have is: my warranty is for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Should I get my refund and get the special deal here, or would the extra year potentially be worth the extra $600? I hate to have paid so much for it, but we don't drive high mileage, so I'm pretty sure we will have the total number of years be the limiting factor, and it seems like it might cost us more than $600 during that last year. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help!

If you have a 8 yr VSA, it does not sound like a Toyota VSA. Toyota only offers a 7 yr/100k platinum for their VSAs. If it is a third party VSA, cancel now! I have not seen many pleasant experiences with these.

    Hello!

Anyone having trouble getting a quote from these folks? I sent a request two days ago and I have not heard anything. The website (Warranty Shack) has no contact information (which makes me nervous) so I have no way of finding out what's going on. Since I just hit 33K, I'm amazingly motivated...

    Any advice?

I sent an email directly to Troy several days ago and did not hear back, but when I called his desk phone Thursday, he answered immediately. Suspect it's a case either of work overload or a spam filter for email...but he still exists.

What is the going price of the extended warranty other than through one's local dealer?

Best deal I've seen is via the first message on this forum:

I'm interested, so how do I order it and get some of my questions solved?

Please go to WarrantyShack.com and fill out the quote request form here: http://www.warrantyshack.com/quotes/toyota/

Thanks for the quick response, I requested a quote, and now I am suppose to wait.
I guess I waited too long, have only 800 miles to go until my warranty expires, and those miles sure add up quickly.

    AOV,

The price is still $990 for Toyota's best and longest extended warranty -- Toyota Extra Care Platinum Plan 7 years/100,000 miles/$0 deductible. And if fewer years or miles make sense to you, then you can save hundreds of dollars more.

If you're worried about the wait, consider calling Troy Dietrich. I believe these are his telephone numbers:

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the price changed since the first post. I will call, since I did not get a response as of yet.

I don't think you should advertise for Warrantyshack.com any more.
I have request quotes 3 times in the last two weeks and have yet to have anyone respond! What is the point of them even being linked to this web site if they have such lousy customer services. You would expect more for Prius owners. I have read other posts on this site that have said the same about Warranty Shack so what is the rational for promoting them?

FYI and FWIW I sent the requested info via snail mail in to Troy about a week ago, heard from Troy today, and gave him payment info for the extended warranty.

I called Troy on his direct line a few months ago, received a prompt return call, got my quote, sent him my check, and would highly recommend his services to anyone interested in the Extended Warranty program. He was absolutely outstanding!

I was hoping for some advice about ext. warranty coverage based on current trends and my vehicle's history. I very much appreciate any thoughts anyone may have.

We drive a 2006 HK (pkg.#6) purchased in California around mid-Sept '06. It has a production date of 8/1/06. It has around 32,000 miles on it now and we average a couple long road trips per year (mostly up and down CA and we have done 2 cross-country trips just past the Rocky Mountains, once per year). We've done the scheduled services at Toyota dealer locations. I think we only went past the scheduled service point once during a long road trip. Solid 45 MPG average doing a mix of city and highway driving mostly near sea level in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Bottom line: we have NOT abused this car. No accidents or dings of any kind. It looks almost new when washed sans a few tiny pock marks in the front hood from highway debris (which I have used the Toyota paint touch up kit on).

We are considering the purchase of an Ext. Warranty right now but are undecided about the Toyota official one or competing offerings. Also not sure which plan would best suit our needs (years/miles/etc). Normally I am not a big believer in ext. warranties, but there are some potentially worrysome trends with our Prius. While I will be taking it in very soon for service and warranty checks, I do not expect all items to be resolved based on past history and Toyota's definition of "normal".

Before reading this list, please keep in mind that overall we *love* this car and have had a mostly positive experience and think of it as a reliable vehicle...

    Highlights of issues:
    - faint engine knocking/pinging has started when climbing hills (persisted after our last service appointment)
    - various rattles/noises from around driver's area (door, dash, and forward); some have been resolved, others not; driver's door inside panel was insulated for a nasty vibration and had the inside panel replaced a year ago under warranty; some of the noises are back now *sigh*
    - driver's window closes, but when button released it "relaxes" a bit and if button is hit again the window visibly moves up a little bit
    - front right headlight bulb had the randomly-turns-off-while-in-use issue (it was replaced 2x in same day--1st replacement bulb was discovered to be broken as we left service center so they swapped it again; I do not believe they replaced the light fixture, just the bulb so this problem could reappear later)
    - faint metallic vibration sound somewhere forward of driver (not in cabin) that has been present since day one; heard when at highway speeds; had one mechanic say it could be anything from some small random unimportant rattle... to a possible loose weld point (he saw one on a different Toyota model). No luck tracking it down yet.

Again, we love this car and it has overall been mechanically reliable. But in regards to the noise/rattle and other issues, we have one friend who bought theirs just before us, same package, etc. and it has almost none of these issues except the headlight.

Any comments/suggestions/advice are welcome. Thank you in advance. :)
