Got Stem Cells?

Cor love a duck, it's amazing how snarky a thread can get. Funny thread, Kow. We disagree quite often, but I promise that if you call me a "grammar nazi" I won't throw a wobbly.

 

If he had called me a grammar cop, I'd just have dismissed it. But I can think of no more vile or insulting epithet you can call a person than "Nazi." Kow probably did not intend it to be an insult of the grossest nature, because he probably thinks it's a joke to use the name of a political movement that murdered well over ten million people in gas chambers, and which to this day survives in groups who continue to advocate the cold-blooded murder of any group they dislike, typically anyone who is not Protestant Caucasian. To demonstrate that he thinks calling people Nazi is a joke, he is good enough to put a smiley face after it. I am not sure which is worse: the use of the epithet, or the fact that Kow considers that epithet to be a funny joke.

I like how Wildkow always posts more in his own threads than anyone else combined.


With this new research, it just means we men have stem cells in an easy to reach area. I can guarantee you'll like your balls opened up to save an organ, rather than getting the stem cells through bone marrow in your legs.

However, I wonder if getting a vasectomy has rendered my stem cells useless?

 

I believe a vasectomy only blocks the path out. It does not otherwise affect the testicles.

 

So the little guys just...hang around?

I know the path out is blocked, but if there's no demand, what happens to supply? The well dries up?

IOW, if they are just being maintained alive, but not living up to their core function, will stem cells still be available in thirty years when I might need them.

Another thing to consider - many men, faced with vasectomy, also opt for complete removal, thus ensuring they'll never get testicular cancer.

Now, I actually have a good reason to keep them there - other than aesthetics of course

 

Sperm cells are not stem cells. If they don't leave because the way is blocked, they eventually die and are cleaned up by the body's normal process for removing dead cells. The testicles are not otherwise changed.

I've never heard of men having their testicles removed (castration!) as a preventative of cancer. Maybe where there's a strong family history of testicular cancer. Castration changes your hormonal balance, however, so this is a very radical procedure with severe side effects.

 

Daniel, don't you mean neutered? That "C" word is too scary to retype.

BTW my questions are more along the line of atrophy, like unused muscles (and a dash of humor).

 

Humor well taken. But atrophy is what happens when a muscle or organ is not used. And the testicles are doing what they always do whether the sperm cells have a door to the outside or not. A vasectomy does not lead to atrophy because nothing is unused.

As for the word "neutered," I've never been a fan of euphemisms. Call it castration so you know what it really is you're contemplating doing.
