Does anyone have a good lead on a replacement display? Toyota wants $6500! Not covered. :(

How'd you manage to crack it? Poke Autobeyours and see if
Steve has any that are compatible with your car.

Try ebay. There are several there about $1K. Searched on "Prius MFD"

I totally read the subject as "I figured out a way to break into the mfd -- to get useful signal out of it, to input pictures and overlays, and to tap into the touch interface; all without external hardware."

Sadly for me, I was wrong; sadly for the OP, he actually broke his screen. I'm really sorry you've got that going on. eBay is a good place to look. Also, if you can get it all the way apart you might be surprised about the actual manufacturer of just the touch screen device. You -may- be able to source a replacement for just that component if you're tech savvy enough or have enough time on your hands.

Will the dealer sell you a remanufactured one, or do you need to give them a repairable core to do that. I thought remanufactured units were around $450 or so.

You can get one from ebay fairly cheap.

I recently damaged the touchscreen on mine and bought a replacement MFD over eBay from an auto salvage place in Arizona. I'm going to remove my mfd this weekend and replace it. Then I will teardown my old one. I design display products for a living so I plan to take my old one apart and see if I can source the touchscreen from one of the manufacturers I know. It's basically just a 4-wire touchscreen and should be available for less than $100.

If you can wait a few days I'll post an update here next week when I get some results. Or you can PM me and I'll let you know what I find.

Re: 2006 Prius MFD display cracked - replacement update

So, I did replace my screen over the weekend. I had purchased a used MFD from a salvage car, 2007 model. The plastic bezel was pretty badly butched by the guy who dismantled the car so I decided to trasfer the core electronics over to my bezel. That's when I discovered that mine had some extra electronics on it connected to a small coaxial cable (in addition to the button wiring) that I'm guessing is part of the smart key system. Therefore, the first lesson is to make sure the car you get your MFD from has the same package features.

So, I decided to actually salvage the LCD from the replacement one and install it in my mfd. That worked fine. The LCD and touchscreen come out together and can be replaced by disassembling the computer module. Sorry, I did not get pictures because my camera was with my wife but I did write down the part number of the LCD panel: Toshiba LTA070B512F. The LCD module apparently comes with the touchscreen, which is bonded to the front of the module by a perimeter adhesive. I did not see an easy way to remove the touchscreen without breakage. I'm going to try and find a source for the panels, with or without the touchscreen and then find a source for the touchscreens separately if needed.

If all goes well, I should be able to offer a complete replacement for people who break theirs, for a lot less than $600+. I'll also post some photos later this week. Stay tuned.

That was the Bluetooth module plus the antenna. In theory you could have swapped over the module to the new MFD but I don't know if it would have worked.

Re: 2006 Prius MFD display cracked - replacement update

OOOOh. That makes more sense. No, there was no coaxial cable coming from inside the repacement computer unit. I opened it up and there was an extra circuit board inside my computer that was not in the replacement one, so I'm pretty sure the firmware and other things were different as well. The part numbers were different.

In any case, I'm having no luck sourcing the display yet. Toshiba tells me it is OEM to Toyota and they can't release the specs. I'm trying to get specs on other versions of the LTA070B's to see if they are similar. I still have the second computer to use as a test bed.

Thanks or all the info. I spoke with a service manager a month or so and he said that if you have the GPS system it have a completely different display system that is much more costly. I have a Package #7 2006 Prius that has Bluetooth and GPS. It becomes close to impossible to find any replacements that are not from a dealer. I contacted a few places and they don't have them. For some reason the 2006 model uses a different screen than earlier models and it's different than newer models. Just my luck.
