Depends which country's measurement you're using. I think the Prius gets around 4.3-4.5L/100km in EU ratings.

Maybe that'll solve the rumuors. Both the 1.6 and the 1.8 litre will be used.

It goes up to 50% depending on SOC, battery temperature, and braking pedal position.
I like to think things are not mutually exclusive. ;)
Anyway, braking today is done my MG2, adding yet another generator to HSD could probably be an overkill (more mass for a purpose that is not being used 100% of time). The trick would be to increase MG2 efficiency or control software probably... Anyway I'm with you, as I think everyone here is, the better regenerative braking we have the better :)
I try to use them the least I can, that's for sure. Antecipating my moves and traffic flow I can avoid a lot of breaking. Still of course the initial braking moments (when needed) are disc braking of course.

All EC (European Community) countries are binded to the same rules and same laws. Therefore every vehicle has the same test cycle applied and the same official consumption value across all member country.

The official value on EC for the Prius combined cycle is 4.3 l/100 km.

its a shame now that so many people here are being sucked into cut rate pricing, and low gas prices to get the large vehicles the automakers are dumping onto the public right now.

it has been predicted the low gas prices we enjoy now will rise to levels higher than last summer by 2011 at the latest. consumption in China and India will increase as the world comes out of the economic recession we are in and that is estimated to take about 2 years (this all assumes that we dont go into a deep depression) and that world demand for oil could be as high as 70 million barrels per day.

its heartening that Toyota understands that continuous improvement is required and that we need to start now to be ready when the next wave of price shocks hits us.

    Well said! :)

Exactly. Toyota's recent history is proof of this understanding. They continued to make the Prius when Honda was axing the Insight. Today, Toyota has announced it is retaining 100% of it's workers and just reducing shifts when needed. Toyota understands. The worst thing GM could do for themselves is to axe the Volt. Come 2011, and 2008 will seem like cake.

Perhaps there's a twist in all of this. Either way, this article has a lot of information:

""James E. Lentz III, president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., said he had proposed the idea to senior company executives in Japan. Lentz said he did not know when they might approve the project, but said he would meet with executives in Japan next month to discuss future models. ...The separate Prius brand would be sold only in the United States, Lentz said, and is not under consideration for other parts of the world.""

Ahh ok, thanks for the clarification.

For Canada, it's 4.0/4.2 L/100km (city/hwy) so the average I guess is 4.1L/100km. In the US, they've revised their testing methods and I believe the new average is 5.1L/100km.

Anyway, better regenerative braking means that we can slow the car down harder without activating the brakes. A battery with more capacity means we can recover more as we descend hills and mountains.

Brakes / Brake life.... An aside to this discussion.

What can we expect? A friend who posts here occasionally will reach 225,000 mi ( 375,000 km ) next month on the 5th birthday of his 2004 Prius. He still is riding on his original brakes. He actually doesn't use them very often.

    500,000km? I don't know.

The 2001 Prius taxi had his front brakes serviced at 147,000km and the rears at just over 300,000.
