K, Honestly. Not trying to troll (in this thread anyway :p)

Coming from an Audi fanatic. I have a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro (all wheel drive). It's not stock by any means, it's got a Chipped ECU, full exhaust, full suspension upgrade, brake upgrade, stage 3 clutch, yada yada yada. The point is, i'm obviously not in it for the gas milage. That being said, i do see an average of 27 or so. Not terrible, but not hybrid-like. The main reason I drive this, is because i get immense enjoyment out of it. The feeling of a turbo coming to full spool is something that can't be compared to anything else. The ability to rip through corners and not get body roll, not lose traction. the whole enthusiastic driving experience is what i go for, i like to push the car, explore it's outer limits, see what it can do. of course, there's always the drive and the want to go faster.

on the seemingly opposite side of the spectrum, there's you guys. the prius drivers. (not trying to insult.) as i lurked, (for a couple hours) i've noticed many instances where people are saying how much of a joy the prius is to drive, how awesome the transmission is, the drive system, apparently it has torque hiding somewhere. :p i guess what i'm asking is what aspect of the driving experience it is that the prius makes shine? how is the ride quality? (granted, mine is rather stiff, due to the aftermarket suspension) what sort of interior stuff does it have? leather? heated seats? (i really don't know) awesome sound system?

for me, driving is the whole package, everything has to add up. the performance of the vehicle, decent gas milage is nice, adequate performance (mine has more than) the exhaust note, clutch feel, the sound system, heated seats are nice (mmm, warm butt on a cold minnesota winter day, lol) etc. it all adds up to an enjoyable ride.

is my mindset far to different to possibly grasp it, or do you think you may be able to shed some light? not that i in any way plan to buy a prius, i just figure i'd try to get a little insight from the other end of the spectrum.

again, i'm really honestly curious, and not trying to troll. this time. and hey, at least i'm honest.

I like a thrill ride as much as anybody. But I am not addicted to it. For me a car is transportation, not entertainment. I think that is the basic mind set where we differ.

Then there are all the economic, political and environmental consequences. Leading a responsible life is a priority for me. Literally, a matter of faith (Society of Friends = Quakers).

Finally, there are all the practical reasons that gets this car top ratings in customer satisfaction. You can find those elsewhere.

That being said, we still have a lot of fun.

Now, you explain to me, the joy that people get out of being trolls. Seriously. I have better things to do in life than to try to annoy folks that I disagree with.

so you would not say you are an automotive enthusiast then? that would be a big difference in views on this.

as to the responsibility thing, i feel it's perfectly acceptable to have a car capable of doing stupidly over the speed limit. just because it can, doesn't mean i do, on public roads anyway. :)

also: stealth mode: how do i get it? it's difficult when you drive a laser red car with no front plate.

Well, I am a different kind of automotive enthusiast than you. I think.

    Does this qualify?

In the past year, I have displayed at over a dozen car shows. Won a dozen trophies and awards.

I have spent $4-5000 on upgrades to my car.

I have driven twice in competitions.

I have produced and carried out a small research project.

I have delivered two lectures on this vehicle.

I spend an UNGODLY amount of time of forums like this discussing cars.

I change my own oil and rotate my tires. I hand wash my car and maintain its finish to at least minimal show condition.

I have a website devoted to my car.

How enthusiastic do you have to get?

P.S. I have heard that painting the front of the car flat black will make it harder for laser speed detectors to find you.

What I like in my Prius? Well, silent & smooth ride in addition to low fuel consumption. :)

no front plate already helps, and unfortunately, i'm not willing to do that to the car's paint job.

not that it isn't already on it's way, what with rock chips and all. 130k and 8 years on the same paint job are starting to show. still looks gorgeous from more than a foot away though! :D

fair enough. but do you view the car as a hobby and a lifestyle? that's where i'm coming from on this. i'm looking for opinions from people who are like...i do not know. super into it.

but hey, every once in a (long) while a smooth quiet ride is nice, lol. not going to lie, interstate 94 gets old every once in a while with stiff suspension. there's that rare (RARE) time when i enjoy being a passenger in someone else's car, one with a nice floaty smooth makes-me-want-to-nap ride.

I believe any thread introduced as not a troll thread turns into one. Sorry this is just my belief. If you really want to know I suggest you look around the site and you will find the answer.

My bike will accelerate to 100km/h in half the time of my Prius, but I hardly ride the bike since I got the Prius. It's fun to drive.

Stealth mode, it's a secret only Prius drivers should know about. If a cop can't see a Prius he can't issue the driver a ticket. I have said too much, sorry supreme leaders.

1: i see where you're coming from on this, considering...ALL of my 10 posts before that one were in fact troll-ish. However, with a title like the one i gave it, it could either be taken at face value, or taken as a troll thread. i didn't want it to be one, and i still don't. i'm really just curious. :)

2: bikes are cool. :D nice for a cruize on a lazy summer day.

3: sorry for asking, don't want you to get in trouble

i would definitely say that qualifies. i honestly don't know anything about anyone here (except my friend digital k, who i'm guessing is in not-good standing here), so i was just asking.

you are correct. however, as stated, this is not a troll thread. if it was, i wouldn't keep responding to people's individual statements, and make generalizations about everything.

look. frankly i don't care if you respond here or not, and i don't care what you think of me. it is what it is. the point is, i'm honestly curious, and just asking questions. don't answer if you don't want to. but don't assume that just because i trolled one thread, which you can easily not click on, that i always troll all the time no matter what.

as for the satisfaction that i get out of it, i guess it's just my skewed and twisted sense of humor. i'm much too cynical, sarcastic, and i'm pretty much an donkey sometimes.

i'm trying to keep this NOT one of those times. anywho, :focus:

i really don't see how age matters here, but in the spirit of keeping this a not-troll thread I'm 22. But, don't assume that because i'm young i lack life experience.

an indicator, sure, but not a guarantee. I know plenty of people with families that have modified cars. My friend Jordan is married with 4 kids, (he's late thirties) and his car is built to the hilt motorwise.

i'm sure there are people here who have modified their pri...i? (plural?) as well.

anyway, what does my age have to do with this? i'm curious where you're going to take this.

    nowhere

when people get older things like these are no longer intresting or needed
yes you can find people that still do that but % not the most.

hé i want to drive a H2 hummer but i can not and the prius here is cheaper then a car the same size because of tax return.
and gas prices hahaha your going to drop from your seat.

    Hi All,

The Prius is a purpose built car, the purpose being basic utilitarian transport at a minimum of impact on energy of manufacture, waste materials both of manufacture and recovery, energy of operation, and operating polution.

Its these kind of rational purposes that many of us have seen as sorely lacking in today's other vehicles. The car industry has sold by emotion. Initially, when I was Iraqiswack's age it was handling emotion - this was during the 1970's with much of the small car and european cars. And lord knows I am a sucker on that one. My Opel Manta had a reasonable suspension, unlike some suppossed sports cars of the time (Camaro et al), which I demonstrated on a few occaisions. Then in the '80's and onward it was reptilian brain emotion - the SUV craze - that was sold. The goal to make the driver feel superior on the road, even at the expensive of putting the driver in a more precarious dangerous position. As long as his/her phsycology made them think they were safer and supperior. And in the late 90's it was power. But what does this actually have to do with the primary purpose of cars? Very little. These are artifices used to market cars.

Now there is a time and place for Iraqiswacks car, but its probably not as a commuter vehicle. The problem is that the bar is so high (to get to pro performance rally) that there is no outlet for such driving to those who would wish to partake. I think this has allot to do with the need to shut down a public road for a race course and put wreckers/ambulance on standby, to have a meaningful test of car and driver. I recommend you look up the local SCCA chapter Iraqiswack.

The Prius gets away from this stuff. And impetence for purpose built cars is just as old. The Model T, and the VW Beetle/2CV are examples. You know Ferdinand Porshe made one of the first Hybrid experimental cars in the 1920's. The basic problem of large internal combustion engine efficiency at low load, and low-end torque deficit was realised even back then. I was first exposed to the Hybrid vehicle concept in a university electrical engineering classroom in 1979, and wanted one since.

Every weekday we travel to work and back. In such repetitive action, it is only responsible to minimise our impact while doing it. And as it is so repetitive, by many many people, accepting and operating to that responsilitiy is even more important.

My initial purpose was to save on fuel. I also wanted a car with a good track record for quality and safety. I got a bonus for resale value. It is also much larger inside than my Honda. This is important because I carry quite a bit of stuff daily. The ride is actually better. In addition it is much quieter in the cabin. In this case being practical can be fun.
