Just got my '09 inspected and was told that the VIN that the car's computer uses to communicate with the inspection system does not match the VIN physically located on the door plate. The dealer says don't worry, they'll fix it, but I'm wondering if I should be on my guard about the legitimacy of the car for any reason. The dealer is reputable and I had the (now) standard wait of 3 months for the car to be shipped/allocated.

Anyone had a similar problem--is it common, easy to fix, and not worth worrying about?

I haven't noticed anyone reporting this issue before. Yes, the VIN has to be programmed into an ECU, sounds like a weird production mistake happened to your car.

I doubt it is production mistake. I suspect the ECU has been replaced.

I wonder if the computer reports the VIN in Hexidecimal?
