My '04 HID bulbs are getting pretty dim. I also need new tires and recently had a few other major expenses, so I don't want to spend the money on HID bulbs. I was curious if it is possible to pull the HID bulbs and replace them with halogens. Anybody have any experience or thoughts on this?

Won't be easy; you'll also have to rip out the electronics that power the bulbs and install new bulb sockets and wiring.

i'm sure someone with halogen headlights would swap the entire headlight housings with you, allowing you to do this, but really its rather pointless, new HID bulbs do cost 4x as much as halogens, but should also last much longer, be brighter, etc.

Windstrings, Bruceha 2000 and I think others seem satisfied with the inexpensive HID replacement bulbs bought from eBay:

I think Windstrings bought his 2 for $69 bulbs from this eBay seller:

Search results for Lighting, Lamps & Accessories 4300K HID Xenon D4R in Car & Truck Parts & Accessories

And here's a link to Bruceha 2000's excellent HID installation photos with step by step instructions:

If I were in your shoes, I'd try the eBay bulbs first. $69 is a lot cheaper than the $600 - $700 charged by Toyota dealers for the bulbs alone.

I'll try the ebay route. Thanks. That does save a lot of money. After having a 60' tree cut down along side my house and getting my crawlspace concreted, even the toyota bulbs sound cheap....:(

Make sure you get the right replacement size (check your owner's manual).

-- Windstrings got D4R for his 2006 Prius.

    -- Bruceha 2000 got D2R for his 2004 Prius.
