Is my dealer / Toyota kidding?

About a month ago I ordered a Touring addition with Package 5. I didn't want it until March when my lease on current car is up. I ordered specifically that far in advance because I didn't want to hear that I couldn't get the color or Touring or package 5. Also I was tired of trying to make up my mind what car to buy.

So today my sales person gets a hold of me (he tried, not very hard more than a week ago). He tells me that Toyota doesn't ship Touring with package 5 to our zone (I live in CT but we are in the NY zone). Not insulting other zones but I'd think NY (along with CA) would get stocked with anything and everything.

Salesman said I could get package 3 (no Nav.) or 6 (leather). I don't want leather because they are too cold without heated seats and I really wanted the Nav.

Does Toyota really restrict what packages go to what zones? I find it very hard to believe that given 4 months they couldn't get me the car I want. I understand 6 months ago you got what you got but now? And with all that lead time.

SO do you think the dealer is just too lazy to get what I want? Does Toyota really do this? Do you think I should contact someone at Toyota?
Going to another dealer would probably be stupid because they all promise you anything until they get the order and then... This is supposed to be one of the "honest" dealers in the area.

I'm actually thinking of canceling and getting something else.

I did a 'build your own' at Toyota website, says only touring pack 6's available here in the SF Bay Area.

    >> Package #6 with Additional Options $4,175

    that's it here.

The fine print note at a bottom says 'vehicles commonly available in your area'.

Last summer, there were no non-touring pack 3's available, which I'da jumped on. By late Sept, pack 3's were back.

About the nav system, would you be ok just getting a Garmin unit? The Toyota nav is DVD based anyway. Have to get new DVD's for upgrades I believe.

I would have been ok not getting Nav system, but I would not have let some stereo shop rip into my new car to put in an upgraded sound system. The JBL was good enough and a must have.

I can build with Touring and package 5 with my zip code. but the note says commonly available - which should mean you can get uncommonly available but it should take a while.

Have a garmin and it is ok but not like having built in.

I guess the issue really just bothers me that you actually can't get what you can build etc.
I emailed Toyota and will see what they say.

It's not Toyota or the dealers who restrict what packages are available, it's the region distributors who cause the problem. Ask your dealer to see if he can get what you want from another region. Most dealers will do that.

You should have no problem finding what you want. Inventory is high right now. Somewhere there is a Prius with your options that is eager to be sold.

Only certain packages are shipped to certain areas. You dealer is not pulling your leg. I know dealers can swap with other dealers in their area, but I do not know if they can swap from outside the area. Many people have purchased long distance and driven home to get a specific package not available in their area.

He doesn't want it until March. Who knows what inventory will be like then.

Also, the point is that if that package is not shipped to his region, his dealer will never have that package. If he wants it, he needs to call out of state.

Bingo. If you can't find any local dealers that will lock in what you want at the price you want, then go out of state/out of region.

I had to do that for my Tundra to because of Gulf States Toyota's lack of options I wanted, and addition of things I didn't want/wouldn't pay for.

Don't cry too hard, in Australia we have a choice of 2 trim levels, basic and iTech.
Basic has cloth, single CD, 2 air bags, ABS EBD + BA but no stability control then the iTech comes fully loaded with 6 stack, 6 air bags, ABS EBD + BA Stability control, leather seats, Nav, smart & key.
