Hello, Thanks for all the great info on this site. I needed to replace my 15 year old Toyota PU, and bought the Prius based on the advertised mpg and Toyota's reliability reputation. I kinda wanted to wait for the 2010, but didn't want to pay the big bucks to fix blown head gasket on the PU. Having read some info on how the Prius works and how to milk it for mpg, I am pleased to report average mpg of 53+ in the first 85 miles.

Welcome, noladerf. I have been enjoying my prius since August, and am getting a steady 48mpg. I live in the foothills, so I get great mileage going into town, and lose a bit on the way back up going home. Love the car, it just does everything I need it to do and with such fun doing it!

Keep up the good work. Congratulations! Over the last 8K mi, I'm doing 49.7mpg. I'm also in the foothills, and mostly 5 - 10 minute trips. Had mine a year and still lovin' it. Welcome to PC.

Niiiice. I can't wait to start getting good gas mileage again. I bought a new 1992 Geo Metro XFi (stick, 1.0 liter 3-cylinder) and it got 55mpg. Had that car for about 10 years (was still getting mpg in high 40's when I gave it to my father), and started getting into V8's again. Bye-bye good gas mileage LOL. But I need to get a newer, cleaner car for various reasons (family, gas savings, etc), hoping to get a Prius soon!

    Thanks for the good wishes.

My average FE is now down to 50 mpg. I got the 53 mpg tooling around town and on the River Road (two lane highway, 25-35 mph, few stops), but it looks like my "real world" FE is going to be a bit less and probably close to the EPA 48 mpg. This seems to be the effect of my short, 10 minute commute to work in the New Orleans CBD - too much time in warmup mode. If I just tooled around already warmed up, I think I'd be getting 60+ mpg, so I guess I'll just have to drive more to save gas .

Still loving the vehicle -- it just works, and I'd probably be happier if I didn't obsess on the instantaneous FE. How long does this obsession take to wear off? I really like the size, the ride, and, although I worried about the visibility before buying, it's not bad.

BTW: Color is "Driftwood Pearl" aka "tan." What's with these color names anyway - sounds more like ice cream flavors or something. "Silver Pine Mica?" What's next, "Titanium Oak Feldspar?"
