During the times of my 85 Corolla, there used to be 4-dr sedan and 5-dr liftback versions. They used to be identical except for the luggage vs. hatch and they had the same owner's and repair manuals.

Now there is Toyota Corolla, Matrix, and Auris. The point is that these cars are not identical to each other if you disregard the hatch/trunk area.

The reason why Japanese Corolla is different is because it came one year before the European Corolla. The Eureopean and US Corollas are virtually identical. The Auris is still sold in Europe. Check the TOYOTA Europe Web site. There is also the Corolla Verso in Europe -- I believe the equivalent of the Matrix.

So, if you call the Matrix a hatchback/wagon Corolla, then the Auris is also a hatchback Corolla. But no matter how similar these cars may be, they all have quite different feel inside and outside -- not just the trunk vs. hatch.

Incidentally, the car that is most similar to the Auris in US is probably the Scion xD; although, the latter has a little bit smaller wheelbase. The Scion xD has the same engine as the Corolla and similar looks and comparable size to the Auris.

But even with the one year delay, it's essentially the same vehicle. With regards to the Matrix, it shares the engine and chassis (and sometimes, the alloys too) but it is different. It's much shorter (probably a greater difference than the Auris) than the Corolla. Toyota does slap the Corolla name on but only for bookkeeping purposes and on the owner's manual (most likely marketing purposes).

It's like saying the new Venza is the rebirth of the Camry Wagon.

    Overall lengths:
    Corolla: 178.7", Matrix: 173.0", Auris: 166.1"

Given your quoted argument, do you now believe that the Auris is even more distantly related to the Corolla than the Matrix? I've been trying tell you that I own the Corolla and have extensively ridden the Auris.

Fine lol. It's not like we haven't had Corollas in our garage before (I think it'll be hard to find someone who hasn't owned or doesn't know anyone that has a Corolla)

Yes, but the point was that you had never seen an Auris and had a misconception about it and you talked as if you had actually seen one before. :)
