Why is both the older forum website version and the new version so slow, why does it someimes freeze both Firefox and Explorer, and why is it so painful to come here and try and catch on the day's messages? is it a hosting situation because I am on many other forums with more traffic and everything is fast and neat...I am almost given up trying to be a daily reader here.... Bob

No problems for me. Speed on old vs. new layout seems to be the same.

Good for me unless I open 10 or more tabs then I run a 5% chance of a hanging IE7.

My guess is that Flash has some deadlock bugs - it seems to happen more often with multiple flash players in different tabs.

I'm considering installing IE7Pro and turning on the ad blocker.

Odd... since the site redesign the site has been blazing fast compared to before.

I still get the occasional FF hiccup due to resource issues from having too many tabs open, but the site itself seems to be fine for me.

There were package updates for Ubuntu, including FF to 3.0.6, GNOME, etc. Will try a Post Quick Reply and see if Ubuntu still has the white screen freeze

Ok, I still get the white screen freeze, even with all the package updates applied. To confirm, Ubuntu 8.10 is now running FF 3.0.6. - but the status bar now claims "done" instead of "stopped." Opened the error console and here are the most recent ones, from my Quick Reply attempt

I'm doing okay here with Ubuntu 8.10 and Firefox 3.0.6. This is the same configuration as Jayman's . No white screen freezes.

When in doubt, blame it on Magic, and start heavy drinking

Not that I need an excuse for heavy drinking ....

I really don't want to think about this much more, but just wondering, Tom, if you added the Flash and Java package to your Ubuntu 8.10?

It would be interesting for both of us to open a shell, run ps -fu "user name" and compare processes. This may also aid Danny in diagnostics

Which does NOTHING to explain why XP Pro SP3 also pukes up on Quick Reply running the Windows version of FF 3.0.6

I never use quick reply. This is a full reply. I do run flash and Java. We seem to be running very similar systems.

Right after this post I will try a quick reply.

It hung me up like a winter white out. Obviously it posted, but all I got was a white browser frame. I had to close Firefox and start again.

    Quick reply needs some work.

It also happens on FF 2.0.0.20 under OSX 10.3.9.

Oops, happened with FFx 3.06 using OS X 10.5.4 too.
I think Safari was ok, but I'll have to check again later.

Danny, the site seems much faster for me and smoother than it was in the old format but I do need to redo my signature as it's too wide now. I had the lockup problem before with the old format too.
I think the ad which was after the first post on each page was slowing things down big time, now it's gone the site runs much better for me.
