    Long overdue is this need.

    Our MPG system is so terribly misleading. It allows those wanting to exploit the "saves gas" greenwashing to seemingly win "uses less" debates.

    In other places around the world (those that don't guzzle like we do), they rely on a unit/distance quantitative system instead. And that has proven much more effective. But in their case, it has been liters/100 km. That won't work here. So the EPA finally came up with this version: Gallons/100 Miles

    I'm tired of the past nonsense and delighted to point out the new rating system... Find a Car

    On it, you'll see the 2009 Toyota Prius listed with estimates of 2.1 City and 2.2 Highway for a combined of 2.2 Gallons/100 Miles.

    Hooray!

    Now we just need to switch to the metric system!

    Very cool. I compared the Prius with another midsize car using the new rating system.

    How much you wanna bet that there will be people arguing that the Hummer is more fuel efficient because its number is bigger than the Prius, hahaha. :D

    Come on USA, catch up already, don't invent a new system, just get on the tried and tested one. I'm guessing the government is trying to work out how to make US litres first.

    We already have a US litre - its called a quart. 4 quarts = 1 US gallon.

    Yes, and the speedometer needs to be in furlongs per fortnight.

    Welcome indeed, see sig at bottom. Yes the GPC methodology puts the emphasis correctly on USAGE not some nebulous game called 'How far can I go on one gallon of fuel?' ( MPG ).

    This will have little traction with the reactionary elements of our population but those with a more progressive outlook will immediately see the benefits for the nation and the environment. The number though are not very sexy. 2.0 vs 2.5 GPC does pale in comparison to 50 vs 40 MPG.

    But for ease of usage I much prefer the GPC system. It costs me 2.1 GPC and thus about $3.80 to travel 100 mi.

    Side notes: For 5 additional points each..
    What is the official measurement system of the US Gov't
    When was this system implemented?
    Which President signed it into effect?

    So then, if I divide 100 by 2.1, I get 47.6 miles / gal. So, what is the big deal between the two rating systems?
    They are both the same, looking the formula in a different angle, no more, no less.

    You mean MPG is not usage? I don't use up 1 gal in the stated distance? Or, it is because that distance is not a round number like a 100 whatever? I have no problems dealing with fractional numbers for usage.:D And, I think I will still drive the same distance on a tank of gas.:D

    It's misleading, giving you the perception of greater benefit when the number is lower. Greenwashers take advantage of that, claiming how the improvement from 15 to 20 MPG is going to make more of a difference than 45 to 50 MPG. It doesn't.

    They draw attention over to how much that 5 MPG equates for the guzzler... hoping focus doesn't ever shift on to how much is actually consumed overall. Get it?

    SAVED = the difference

    USED = consumed overall

    Interesting, eh?

    Nicely done Tony.

    This is the reason for the dual lablelling on all retail packages as well. As a side note one cannot do any business with the US Federal Government unless the dimensions and weights are stated in metric units.
