Thanks hobbit. That's a good thought, and it has caused a lot of trouble out in the real world. Correct me if I am wrong, but I was thinking that tcp.rfc1323 dealt only with TCP packets. OpenArena, like all Quake based engines, uses only UDP and then on only one socket. Does rfc1323 affect the transmission of UDP packets?

Well, this just gets odder and odder

I've had a couple of issues over the past 4-5 years where a Windows XP machine would refuse to browse, but *would* allow Outlook to work

So, thinking it was a glitch in the Windows stack, wiped the drives, reinstalled Windows XP, and ... sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't

In the end, I solved the issue by disabling the built-in 10/100 port, putting on a name brand (Linksys, 3Com, HP, etc) 10/100 card, and everything worked again. I really can't explain why, network analysis pointed to dropped packets but that can be caused by stack issues or by hardware issues

As far as RFC1323 issues, I logged into my QNX account and snooped around a bit. This link should be public so you shouldn't need a login

UDP vs TCP there are a ton of articles on setup, performance tuning, etc that I never follow. I just let everything work default out-of-box and have never had an issue

This is a long read, not entirely relavent to your box, but is an interesting read all the same

Yeah I can't explain that one either. I played around with my Ubuntu machine last night, and could not replicate your issues

You know I was just teasing you in good fun. Right?

I've had to do that before, but not on this computer. Sometimes the built-in hardware is a little shaky. The NIC on this machine has been working fine, and continues to work well other than this particular weirdness.

    Thanks for the links.

    Yea, sure. :pout:

I know you are teasing, but you do have a point. Users are ultimately behind all of the computer problems we have. In this case, if I didn't insist on connecting to the Internet, there wouldn't be a problem. Get rid of users and life is good.

If you have a spare NIC laying around then it wouldn't hurt to try it. I always keep several in the Big Box Of Random Parts, you can pick them up dirt cheap at surplus places

    Oh boy ....

In all seriousness, *something* had to have changed to cause the sudden issue. Either it was the router - which you took care of - or the app, or the hardware in the computer.

The maddening part is that there could be a subtle combination of issues. Like building a Failure Mode tree, it can get downright hairy after awhile. In the meantime:

Sure, something as simple as an OS update. I am running on a new kernel, and I don't recall if OpenArena has worked since then. The new kernel works with two other computers here, but none have the same hardware.

When you factor hardware and software, the number of permutations becomes nearly infinite.

I dumped the console log from a good and failed session of running OA under Linux. The logs are exactly the same up to and after the failed attempt to connect to a server. No error messages, it just doesn't connect. Hit <ESC> and the session resets, just as it does on the good machine.

    I hate freaky problems.

Another annoying thing is lack of support. There are several forums dealing with OA, but so far I have not been able to join any. I can read the forums, but when I register it appears that no one is home.

That appears to be a common complaint

Well the whole freaky problem went and fixed itself in yet another mysterious twist of technology. I dumped logs, did network traces, and pulled out hair. Numerous reboots did nothing. I tried changing NIC settings, but still no luck. I finally decided that it would have to wait, as I needed to do some real work.

I rebooted into Windows today to do some bookkeeping and set up my tax programs. I was thinking I should try OpenArena from Windows on that machine, but I didn't do it. When I rebooted to Ubuntu I thought "Hmmm, why not give it a try" and the darned thing worked like nothing was ever wrong.

This one has me scratching my head. I can only speculate, but perhaps the Windows NIC driver kicked something back into line and now it works even in Ubuntu. Who knows? At least now it works again.

Perhaps Tom could harness his Malfunction Magnetism and put it to use for the good of humanity! He could be PC's resident superhero.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Otherwise he could turn into an evil supervillan, and we don't need any more of them

Yes, I could be like John Coffey in The Green Mile, except with technology problems. You guys better watch out when the bugs come spewing out of my mouth.
