Well I got mine for US$400 and change OTD so I thought it was a great deal (esp. considering that Kal Tire was quoting me Cdn$850 and up for the same set!) $100 off ain't bad!

What is the #5 - "Saftey Connect" that will not be available until the Fall '09?

I believe it is similar to GM's on-star.

Does anyone know if the button will be in the cars on launch, and just not work until released, or will no button for the "Safety Connect' exist in the 2010 Prius until it is released, and will then be an available option?

Additionally, In other words, if we rush out to buy one on release, and there is no button for it, can we have it added later?

I know the button was there on at least 2 of the prototypes that were in Chicago. I can't imagine it wouldn't either be there on the final manufactured cars (as a non-functional button), or be readily installable later.

As a cost saving measure, I imagine it would be installed after. I seem to recall some of the driving cars in LA didn't have the button.

Are you kidding me? Those are the UGLIEST rims ive seen in my entire life WITH AND WITHOUT covers. I rather stay with the regular rims on my 08. atleast they look decent.

I have not been able to find my notes or other records on this question, but I'm fairly certain that the first 2010s not only will not have the Safety Connect feature but will not be pre-wired to handle a retrofit. I suppose there always is a way to put it in through an aftermarket product, but I believe the word from Toyota was that it would not be a simply add-on after the fact.

If I find that my notes have different information, I'll post an update.

mostlikely also protect the rim from getting scrached if you hit get too close to the sidewalk. cheaper to replace a cover than a whole rim.

I guess you had to be there...

But granted.. its indeed a matter of taste.. I'm comparing them with my existing wheels "with the covers popped off".. definitely an improvement IMO.
Some folks like the covers better... just not me.

Of course.. if you want to spend 2K and kill about 3 - 4 mpg, I'm sure you can do much better.

    Heres a better pic.

Is it really about the money?.. how much are we talking here to run around for thousands of miles with something you don't like.
You aren't buying prius to save gas money are you?

But when I buy a new toy.. be it a cell phone, or camera etc... the first thing that comes off is the protective cover because its ugly.

I have 80K on both of mine and no scratches... buying another wheel is not big deal if needed.

Anyone who buys nice wheels on any car would be a fool if they are overly worried about the fact that they could scratch them.

I would only leave a protective cover on "if" I thought it looked better than what it was protecting?

You guys are asking for a slam if your railing against someone elses taste.
You might was well put down their choice of car color too?

Why put a hub cap over a nice wheel to protect it?

Unless "like I said" you thought the hubcap looked better... if so, so be it!.. but that doesn't make others wrong because they don't share your taste does it?

When you buy my car and give it to me.. then you get to say what my wheels look like!

I'm surprised that Toyota is putting covers on what to me looks like a nicely-finished alloy wheel. I thought it was customary to only put covers on steel wheels.

It has been the common-place event for the Prius. It is hard for me to understand why they cover up the 15" wheel -- much less the 16", which looks particularly good when paired with the Magnetic Grey exterior.

Wheel covers allowed for a more aerodynamic shape w/o the weight, and protect the rim against curb abrasion.

They were for aerodynamic purposes. This wheel is almost the same weight despite being slightly wider to accomodate wider tyres. The coves fill up the gaps to improve flow. Of course a fully covered wheel would be best but it kinda looks ugly (the best attempt is the Civic Hybrid with tiny pie slices cut out of a nearly full disc alloy wheel design).

Well its nice they give you a choice.... most cars have what the have, and thats it... at least you have a couple of options to suit your taste without it costing anything to choose.. and you can even change your mind and go back and forth.

I can only guess as to why.. but my guess is to have an option for hard core efficiency fans verses a more sportier look.
A look that rivals many expensive wheels.

On the other hand.. some may think the covers are more sporty... to each his own.

I was thinking about that too. The 17" were design to attract a different crowd and to make the Prius more sporty looking. The 15" are there to keep the hypermilers happy (which probably explains why a 16" option wasn't offered). I just hope that the 15" isn't XL rated which would be a bit more cost and a bit more hassle to look for XL tyres.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't really care much about wheel aesthetics. It's probably the engineer in me, but give me a wheel optimized for the job and I will like it. I dislike gimmicks and features done just for looks. I will take a plain steel wheel if it works better. Disk covers? Bring them on. Forget spinners and eye candy.
