    The thing about the G1 prius in my mind is you are more connected to the road mechanically than the 2005 prius, or at least it feels so.

    to me, the g2 dash is really long and requires you to peer over if your short.

    We have Blue Moon Pearl, and we've seen Brilliant Blue (the somewhat dark Blue) but what's "Blue Ice?"

    I've only driven a G2 on a test drive, but I found the braking to feel more natural then on the G1. the G1's brakes have always felt a bit 'touchy' to me. I've more or less adjusted to it over the years, but only up to a point.

    No argument about the turing radius though... it's wicked-tight!

    He's referring to "Aqua Ice Opalescent". Women are fascinated by it and will stand there by the parked car trying to decide if that's Seafoam or is it Viridian? Persons of the male persuasion will think it's light Blue in the sun, Green in the rain, or (rarely) Silver. As for me, I think that someone let the fab four run wild back at the paint factory when this color first came out.

    This is a great thread.

    We currently own both. A 2002 Gen 1 (w/205k miles) and a 2006 Gen 2 w/ 52k miles. I agree with several posts already listed.

    * Better visibility
    * Trunk with release
    * Slightly better sound system. (Think we get better bass with a trunk.)
    * The ride. Our Gen 1 has a smooth ride. Gen 2 is stiff.

    That being said, the Gen 2 is a better car in terms of electronics and other hybrid enhancements. Costs to maintain are also less. Slightly better gas mileage even with a bigger vehicle.

    Gen 1 cars are great. I gave serious consideration in purchasing a new 2010 Insight -- and quickly discovered that my 7-year old Gen 1 is still clearly superior car.

    I never heard anything about any steering rack warranty; in fact, the shaking problem I've experienced occurred AFTER replacing the rack & pinion. I probably ruined any chance of getting help from Toyota when I had someone else put in the new rack. If they had said anything about a warranty, I would never have gone elsewhere! (Basically, they said no more warranties after 80K, and mine was at 90K...:mad:

    Still, I love everything else about the G1 and am most reluctant to give it up.

    No, there is not a lifetime warranty for the 2001-2003 steering assembly.

    It was for 2001 and 'early 2002' cars, with unlimited odometer and 5 years from vehicle in-service date.

    1. Looks. The 2001 Prius was given an award by the Museum of Modern Art for its styling.
    2. Despite its awkard appearance, the transmission lever of the Gen 1 is much more practical than the Gen 2 lever that always springs back to its rest position after a selection change.
    3. Size. The Gen 1 is more manueverable than Gen 2. I wish that Toyota continued to produce the Gen 1 as an entry level car after the 2004 Gen 2 appeard.

    The Ford Escape and Fusion Hybrid systems are the same as the Prius G1, licensed from Toyota.

    Have never drive a Gen-II, but I prefer my Gen-I 2000 to my wife's Gen-I 2002 because the sound insulation is not as good! That's because I can hear more clearly when the IC engine is running and when not, and so I can drive more efficiently (like backing off the pedal slightly so I glide longer on battery, speeding up more when the IC has already decided to start). I am concious of other drivers though - non-Prii-aware individuals just don't understand quite the same!

    You can add a towbar to a Gen-I. I got mine custom made, but the guy fitting it wound the nuts up too tight and started to crush the frame so be careful! Mostly for bikes but I have towed a trailer a couple of times. There may be more sound feedback from the muffler mount after the towbar was added so that might improve my driving too.

    I have a 2001. I don't think the 2000s were even available in the USA. I can still drive over the roughest pavement and not a squeak, or rattle. They built them strong. Mine is quieter likely due to the Ziebart rustproofing and sound insulation, too. Perhaps slight. I had it done to my 2000 minivan, as well.
