I think I broke my EBH even before installing?!?

So I ordered an EBH from prius chat and have had it on the shelf waiting to do an oil change and so I started playing around with it. I decided to make sure that the orange plug went in to and out of the metal engine plug. It did this well a couple of times, however getting it back out was a little difficult. I then decided that I should plug it in to make sure that it works.

After plugging it into the wall it got REALLY HOT! It started smoking a little like a soldering gun does when it is plugged in. I decided that was enough of a test (it was only in for about 40 seconds). I decided that maybe the smoke was from the orange part that plugged into the metal body so in trying to remove it the plastic housing tore exposing the wires within.

Did I just break my new EBH? If so is there anyway to order just the plug part and not the heater part? Could there be a defect in the part (I already know that I am defective). Should I have not tried to test it by plugging it in before installing into the car?

    Thanks.

I can attach a picture if someone needs it.

You need the expertise of a FireEngineer. If he doesn't respond, you might PM him, or read his posts.

    The instruction says...
CAUTION: Do not operate in air

If it doesn't make heat, I think you have to replace the heater assy.

If the wires are exposed it wouldn't be safe to use IMHO. You should never plug in a block heater unless it is installed, it's like turning on an electric kettle while it's empty. Write it off as an expensive lesson and order a replacement.

Agree w/ Pat...throw it away and order a new one. The exposed wires are a bad thing and I don't think you could safely get the orange part back in the core.

And next time don't play with it, just install and test.

Thanks everyone for your input. A new part has been ordered and I also up sold myself and got a scan gauge II. Maybe someone will learn from my mistake and not plug in the EBH until it is in the block.

Sorry to hear you'll need to pay for another EBH.
But yea, sometimes it's wise to be not 'blind-testing' thing....like using a lighted match to test where the gas leak was.

Make sure you use the heat conducting goop too, it's important.

Look at the bright side, you have a spare power cord now.

I wish I had known you needed it installed, I was in California all last week, could have stopped on my way through SLO. If you want to do it yourself then follow Green Hokies instructions found here on PriusChat. If you want it installed, I might be back in California before June.

    Yeah, it's fried

The best way to "test" the EBH before installing it, is to take it out of the box. Set your DMM to ohms, and measure the resistance across the live and neutral prongs of the EBH

You should expect 35-37 ohms. If you know voltage, and know ohms, you can calculate power in watts, easily enough for a purely resistive load

    P = V squared, divided by ohms.

    Assume V=120 volts. 120 times 120 = 14,400

    14,400 divided by 35 ohms = 411 watts

If you get infinite ohms, there is an open somewhere

For the Americans in the audience, an electric kettle is a shiny chrome thing - newer fancy ones are plastic - that one plugs into the wall socket to boil water.

The freshly boiled water is then added to the teapot to make tea. Preferably, one adds about a cup of boiling hot water to the empty teapot, swishes it around a bit to "clean" it and prewarm it, then dumps the cup of water inside.

Add 1-2 teabags, fill with freshly boiled water. Wait 5 mins, enjoy with sugar and milk

Pretty much every place we stayed in Scotland had those in the room...loved 'em. When we got home we bought a large one for home use and I use it about once a week.http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B00030J1SO?tag=priuschatcom-20[IMG]

Good on ya Jay, I use mine to boil water to make instant coffee.
Mum uses hers to boil water to pour over her Weet Bix which she then adds some milk to and eats for brekky.
We make tea with a billy over an open fire in the back yard, the smell attracts wild koala and echidna.
Sorry I would have included a more complete description had I known...

I think that should cover it for this post. :D

My turn to show my ignorance, how do you boil water?
    I'm guessing on the stove.

Teabag? What's that. I will admit to seeing a few serving in tea rooms but I don't think they would like putting in a pot and boiling water pouring over them.

If you want to do it right you shouldn't use a teabag but real tea.
Swirl half a cup of boiling water through your tea pot then tip out.
Put tea leaves in the pot with a teaspoon, use one heaped teaspoon per cup plus one extra spoon full.
Fill the pot with boiling water, place the lid on the pot and allow to draw or take the flavour from the leaves for about 5 minute.
If you like white tea add the milk to the cup first.
Pour tea from the pot through a tea strainer into the cup to the desired level.
Add sugar to taste, use the sugar spoon, do not put the sugar spoon in your cup.
Stir gently with a tea spoon, do not be rough.
    Sip and enjoy.

Note, tea tastes better in fine bone china cups and you should also use a saucer. Do not drink the spills from the saucer.

Billy tea is better but not as refined. It requires spinning the billy full of boiling water and tea over your head.

I have a dinner set just like this, a very nice cup and saucer.

This is my tea drinking receptacle. Mine is not as good a condition owing to 10 years or more of dishwashing but it is still the best brown tea you ever tasted.

I've had friends from my Army days, and college days, visit with me. They walk into my kitchen, spot the shiny chrome water kettle on the counter top, and invariably ...

    "Wth is *that* thing??"

I once told a buddy it was how Canadians made Pasta, and he actually believed me. I'm a baaaaaaaad man ....

Actually the kettle has many uses in the kitchen. I've often used my kettle to make brekky (Breakfast) that way too. Like you, it's an easy way to make instant coffee

Last Christmas - that is, over a year ago - an Aunt of mine got me one of those single cup coffee makers.

Keurig - Single cup coffee maker – coffee brewer, gourmet coffee, gourmet tea, K-Cups

She was convinced that my habit of brewing a pot of coffee in the morning, than reheating it over the next 3-6 hours, was sure to kill me off. So, I graciously accepted her gift and tried it out.

Yes, it makes nice coffee, but I'm too cheap to spend upwards of 80 cents Cdn to make a cup of coffee. The sample box she gave me also had stuff called "tea" but it was, without question, repulsive. I could probably spill it outside to keep stray cats off my front steps

It also quickly dispenses hot water, so I use it to make instant coffee. For the most part it sits alone and lonely in a corner of my kitchen

I've made coffee that way while camping. I found the smell tends to scare away every living thing within a 20 hectare area

My stove only tends to annoy the water.
