Neither the S, S "Standard Package" nor S Touring model of the NHW20 are available with cruise control here in Japan. It come as standard on the remaining models (G, G Touring and G Touring "Leather Package").

I'd say, cruise control is of very limited use on mostly busy Japanese roads. I didn't have it on my last two cars and can't say I miss it.

In the current economic environment ... why not?
Grinning car salesman: "You can't quite afford the new, latest and greatest Prius? No problem! We've got one right over here that is perfect for you!"

ahhh ok. Yeah it must be a North American thing. Even in Canada, I can use cruise on B roads.. A-roads too if it's the late evening and no one's out but then again, P&G would be better in that scenario.

Seems for the time being...this is Toyota's answer to the Honda Insight.

Toyota May Cut Price of Prius Hybrid to Match Honda?s Insight - Bloomberg.com

Toyota May Cut Price of Prius Hybrid to Match Honda’s Insight

By Naoko Fujimura and Tetsuya Komatsu

March 17 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest automaker, may cut the price of its Prius gasoline- electric hybrid car in Japan to match Honda Motor Co.’s Insight.
Toyota spokesman Yuta Kaga declined to confirm or deny a Nikkei newspaper report today that said the starting price of the Prius will be cut to 1.89 million yen ($19,250) from 2.33 million yen. The Insight hybrid, which went on sale in Japan last month, starts at 1.89 million yen.
Toyota later this year plans to introduce a revamped Prius with higher mileage and more power than the current model and the Insight. Both automakers are betting on fuel-efficient models as governments worldwide tighten emission standards.
The Prius accounted for half of all gasoline-electric models sold in the U.S., the world’s biggest auto market, last year. The price reduction would apply to the current Prius model.
Honda aims to sell 5,000 Insights a month domestically and has said it hopes to sell 100,000 in North America in the model’s first 12 months. The Insight goes on sale in the U.S. this month. Toyota’s U.S. target is 180,000 units of the new Prius in its first full year.

i would guess that like in Europe, in Japan there is an huge fleet market where companies buy cars for their employees to drive and it goes out of their taxes which is big benefit to them.

This is why i dont expect this Prius to appear in Europe and NA - fleet market for such vehicle is much smaller there.
