Preventative Maintenance

    I suppose i'm aiming this at Patrick[Wong]as it was he who suggested this maintenance,
    I received Engine Water Pump,Thermostat,Serpentine Belt and Inverter Coolant Pump today and i've sheduled the work to be done by my local Toyota Dealer on 10th March,they've quoted me 2hrs labour at a total cost of €150[$190]Does that seem reasonable?
    But they didn't say anything to me about Long Life Coolant,i'm guessing this would be the oppotune time for a coolant flush especially with over 210,000klm on the odo....Thoughts!!

    Hi Hal,

    Two labor hours sounds good. Yes, the Super Long Life Coolant should definitely be replaced and your car will probably need eight liters (more is needed for North American 2G Prius due to the presence of the coolant heat recovery system.) In the US SLLC costs ~ US$20 per US gallon (or 3.8 liters). It probably costs more in the UK, maybe GBP20 for four liters.

    Hi Patrick,
    Well i had the parts replaced yesterday,car is driving fine but i'm hearing that"water running behind the dash thing" that i read in another post that you replied to but can that post...NO!
    I believe you said it was air in the system?
    I rang the service tech this morning and he told me to remove the radiator cap and run the car for 5 minutes with the heater on...done that but i can still hear it,It only happens when the ICE starts and then seems to stop,they're on lunch at the moment[13.30 here]but i'd like to get it sorted as soon as,so what REALLY needs to be done to resolve this,

    Hi Hal,

    If you don't have time to go back to the shop, you can DIY. I would suggest putting the Prius into Inspection Mode so that the engine will continuously run, then setting the cabin temp control to MAX HEAT and turning on the cabin fan full blast. Rev up the engine to encourage coolant flow, you may have to do this for more than 5 minutes.

    After the bubbling noise goes away and the car cools down, check the fluid level in the overflow reservoir as well as in the radiator by opening the radiator cap. You may need to add some coolant, if so only use pink Toyota SLLC.

    In case you do not know about Inspection Mode, here's how to enter that:

    Make the car IG-ON (where all instrument panel warning lights are on)
    Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice while the shift indicator is in P
    Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice while the shift indicator is in N
    Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice while the shift indicator is in P
    You should now note the hybrid vehicle warning icon flashing in the MFD
    Start the car by pressing the POWER button while depressing the brake pedal, as usual.

    You can only rev up the engine to 2,500 rpm while in this mode. At idle the speed will be around 1,000 rpm and if you depress the pedal less than 60% then the speed will be 1,500 rpm.

    When you are done and make the car IG-OFF, then Inspection Mode will automatically cancel. Do not drive the car when in this mode unless you want to run the risk of blowing the transaxle (this mode disables traction control which protects the transaxle from an overrev situation in the event of wheelspin.)

    I brought it back to the garage[10 mins away]and they sorted it out, didn't ask them how but all seems fine now,and Patrick, i hope you're not going to suggest any more preventative maintenance.....for a while anyway.PS,there was a small leak at the weep hole on the engine water pump,small deposits of dried coolant in that area,so thanks again!!

    Hi Hal,

    Glad to hear that the problem was successfully resolved and that the old engine water pump was beginning to leak slightly, that justifies its replacement.

    If you've previously changed the iridium spark plugs, all fluids and filters, and the PCV valve then you should be good to go.

    Yeah,Transaxle Fluid changed at 180,000klm,as advised by many here on PC[not dealer]
    PCV valve,Plugs,oil and air filters at it's 210,000klm service interval,
    I'm planning to change the transaxle fluid more frequently,i note that you change yours at 30K[miles].

    I think an early initial service is more important than frequent servicing. I did my Prius when it had around 12,000 km on it, the fluid was very dark red.

    Subsequent drain/refill by me, the fluid looked new.

    Until becoming a member of PC i had no idea about transaxle fluid change intervals,it's not mentioned in the service shedule in the owners manual and the dealer never mentioned it so i requested it at the 180,000klm service and that was the first change,didn't get to see what it looked like and they didn't say anything to me in relation to it but with that mileage i'm sure it was......well used!!

    If I remember correctly, I have added generic autostore 50/50 coolant as a top-off in the past. How bad a move was it to mix that with the original SLLC ?

    Should a flush and refill be done?

    The Toyota SLLC is an organic acid mixture, almost silicate free. Regular auto parts store "green stuff" has a lot of silicates in it. Not a good idea to mix the two

    Yes, by a dealer or someone who has the correct Toyota coolant.
