Hyo, I know you are kidding, but the same thought came to me. Not in a negative way, for sure, but trying to help. I wish that those of us that have had good luck with relationships could somehow help. We need another private thread, much like the PCD one.

having been on the "single" scene during this decade, i can say that i found zero opportunities to meet someone since i did not drink. it was easy to give up looking and was about to do the online personals thing as everyone i knew had recommended. i do know a lot of people who met others that way. granted, most dont find what they are looking for, but actually know a few people who met online, married and are still very together.

as for me, the relationship i did find was a co-worker and i cant say that we are a perfect match.

we do have different interests, she does not conserve well, is a financial disaster, unable to budget, etc, etc etc... but in her favor, she is a "bit" younger than me.

daniel, the online thing does take a bit of luck, risk-taking, and sometimes a LOT of trial and error, but at least you wont have to eat alone while fishing...

If I expected perfection, I'd still be looking. (And thoroughly enjoying the search, I might add.) I have my regrets, but there are certain advantages to marrying the first girl you get pregnant. Oh crap, did I just say that out loud?

Oh no, haven't been "badly" treated. I'm a big boy, I knew what I was getting into
I've lost count. Quite frankly, I have no problem ending up in the sack. But would I want to spend months ... years? ... with that person? NO

    Ding! Right on the button

That has rarely happened to me.

All at the same time, to the same woman? Damn ... impressive

The stats for divorce and separation are pretty frightening. It fails more often than it works

Plenty of challenge and satisfaction taking in stray/shelter animals, most of whom have been abused.

As far as reproduction, that doesn't interest me in the least

I'm afraid I don't understand this statement at all. Is it supposed to mean that going on the on-line sites will lead to lunch or dinner dates? It has not for me, and I'm listed on several different dating sites.

So if we are counting, I've been married longer than you have been alive: 34 of my 52 years. We dated for a couple of years before that. Still, 14 years is a good run. Keep it up.

People are spending money. They have to, to survive.

It's the banks that aren't spending money--or should I say, lending it. That is the crux of the problem. Capitalism can't survive without credit.

Obama has to much more aggressive in loosening credit--that means some banks should be nationalized temporarily, as was done in the S & L crisis in the 1980s.

Temporarily? I say nationalize them all, do it now, and make it permanent.

The only credit that needs to be unfrozen is commercial paper. There is absolutely no sense in freeing up any, not even a little, consumer credit. Consumer debt is a large part of what got us into this mess. I realize this will, naturally, slow down consumption and thus hinder the economy, but do we really want people buying more junk that they can't afford? The credit card is beyond maxed out, and the prospect of it ever being paid off is looking rather grim.

    Now that is TRULY impressive.

What's the secret? Growing up together? Heavy drinking?

I did the same thing, 0% for 24 months with automatic bank draft, Never wrote a check, never had to mail in a payment. Lien release showed up in the mail about 10 days after the last payment was deducted. Now I have a new clear title. It was a smooth deal and the only time I have ever owned a car that had a lien on the title. :)

Boy, oh boy, Jay, you are sounding really cynical. Lots of marriages fail, that's true. But lots of others succeed. It is entirely possible to have a relationship that works and that brings happiness to both people. Just because you had bad experiences, and contempt for the women you have sex with, that does not mean that only by staying drunk can two people live together.

True, but it does help. :D

No, seriously, neither of us drink much, although as we get older we find we often like a glass of wine in the evening.

As for long marriages, I will tell you what works for me. I'm completely nuts for my wife. I really, really like her. That makes the rest of it pretty easy.
