One thing to be careful of is the "dealer fee", just extra profit. Most dealers charge it but in my negotiation that was included in the $23,115. When the final paperwork was done, it actually showed the car for $22,120 plus $995 dealer fee, for a total of $23,115. The only other things added after that were the sales tax and my DMV fee for transferring the plate from my prior car and registration for this new car.

Oh, and they didn't charge me to deliver the vehicle with a full tanks of gas. Also, my salesman was pretty knowledgable and went through about a 15 to 20 minute walk-through/orientation on the Prius.

i'm looking at buying a 09 w/package #5. the price on the table is $24,257 (after toyota's $1000 rebate). Do you think I can get any lower? It seems that with all the inventory available (they have at least 20 new prius on the lot), the general state of the economy, etc that the dealer would be very willing to do "whatever it takes" to close a deal.

It really depends on the dealer and how much they want to move inventory I think. For an 09 Package # 6 with the mat set I was quoted 24949 after the 1000 rebate. I was hoping to get invoice but this is about 440 over invoice. I am still deciding what to do.

So I'm wondering if this is a good deal or not. There's a package #6 2007 Prius (leather, fully loaded) for $22,995 with 10K miles on it.

This seems high to me considering that xwords just got a 2009 #6 for less than 2K more than this ($24,783.32).

What do others think? What should I offer them if I can pay cash? I would love advice as I am going out to meet with dealers this weekend and see what's available. The #6 and low mileage is attractive to me but I think the price is too high. I need some guidance. thanks!

You guys don't realise how good you have it as far as car prices go.
In Australia the iTech which is the top of the range, smart key, 6 stack, reverse cam, nav etc, costs $46,900 plus dealer delivery and government charges.
    Here is the conversion
    46,900.00 AUD = 30,821.81 USD

That is before government and dealer costs!
There are no tax concessions for buying a new car for a private buyer.

I wonder why we get a height adjustable drivers seat?

I am deciding if this is a good deal:

    New 2009 Package 5
    Out the door: 27,170

In the Bay Area se we do have 8.25 sales tax.

Here in Los Angeles, I offered 22k on a 2008 Prius, package 6, with 8000 miles on it (Toyota Certified). The dealer came back with 23k, claiming that invoice is $22,896.36 and if I go to 23k we have a deal. The car is currently priced at $26k.

Does this seem right? What does "invoice" mean on a used car? Can I get them to go lower?

What are the prices of a new 2009 in california? I'd think it'd be around $23k? To me, their asking price seems a bit high.

"Invoice" is probably what they have in it. Invoice on that car new was well over that. I always think a year older car certified is always a better deal then buying new.

Normally you're right. But with the sales tax deduction and the amount local dealers around Chicago are charging for certified used Prius's, it was actually a minimal difference in price to buy a new 2009 for me.

Priusunlimited, do you think it's a fair deal?

My inclination is that it's high too, especially after seeing some of the deals on this forum. My problem is that there aren't that many "slightly used" 2008s available, and I really don't want to buy new (for eco and monetary reasons).

I emailed the dealer late last night and stuck to me 22k offer, letting her know that I can pick up the car, financing in hand, today. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

I think the problem is finding one barely used would be an issue, they dont have used car factorys =)... 22k for a pack 6 08 i think is good.. u do hold the upper hand as you do have your own financing not many buyers have that these days.... Also dont always believe what you read people could be posting great deals but may have had the dealer screw them on the trade or lower the price to get a better financing package so on and so on.

    Hey folks,
Just thought I would jump in here. Recently became a new member of Prius owners. And how happy I am. I went the extra mile though, recycled. Yep Im not only saving gas, 53.3mpg, but I recycled my prius. 2007 with 19,000 miles, pkg#6 $13,000. Luv it so much we bought another recycled 2008 Touring, with 11,000 miles for $16,000.
The way I see it, two for the price of one..........

    Recycled, do you mean salvaged?
