I have an 09 Prius, option 3, that has satellite radio capability. I was wondering what else is needed (other than subscribe to a service) to receive satellite radio.

If you want to have XM/Sirius in your car you will have to buy a receiver. You can go to the priuschat shop here ...

PriusChat Shop : Toyota XM Satellite Radio Kit [XM] - $265.00

or you could buy a portable and use the AUX port, there are several options you could choose from. I am sure other posters will be able to give you more options.
I went with the XM option, it just plugs in to the back of the radio.
It was fairly simple to install. Look here...

Either way you go, have fun with the new toy!!

So, even if I have the option with satellite radio capability, I would still need to purchase a receiver?

If so, what does the option 3 radio, that includes satellite radio capability, have that the option 2 radio, without satellite capability, does not have.

A socket in the back that accepts the XM/Sirius wire harness from the tuner unit!

i second what kroser indicated. However due to the SSC1 being out of stock, I purchased the Toyota interface there, then the SSC1 through Amazon marketplace. Looks like they are getting rare out there.

I did some searching tonight and it seems as if the SCC1 receiver is in short supply with many sites listing it as discontinued. I wonder if this means a newer model is on the way. Alternatively, if no new model is imminent, maybe it's time to buy now before they all disappear.

I'm not sure I understand why...the SSC1 is listed as compatible to receive XM channels in addition to the normal Sirius ones. Whichever...i've had Sirius for years and always liked them better. The channel titles in XM were horrific...like, what the hell channel is FuzzBall or Pinkytime or some other sh*t.

Just in case it is not obvious to you, plugging into the sat port on the option 3 model gives you steering wheel and display monitor control over the xm unit. Plugging into the aux port does not.

Awesome...i got both installed. My boss helped me with it and we ended up putting the two units (TOYSC1 and SCC1) to the right of the glove box, behind the far right vent plate. There was tons of room in there.

The only issue was with the cables coming loose...not behind the stereo, but from the little PS2 type connector on the two little units.

After that, we just ran the cable to the head unit up along the area in near the air filter and all was well.

Dealing with Sirius to add this radio and cancel my old one was more of a hassle.

I got mine installed a week ago but I temporarily have my units in the back of the bottom glove box. Glad to hear there's plenty of space to tuck them into behind the right vent. How did you secure the units in that space? Did you combine the two the TOY-SC1 and the SCC1 using the brackets that came with them?

For me the most difficult thing was getting the plug into the rear of the existing radio. I didn't have much room after moving the junction box out of the way. I guess my problem is the junction box would not move that far to the right thus I had little maneuvering room to get my hand behind the radio.

I agree it was horrible dealing with Sirius. I too had to cancel one radio and add a new one. I couldn't find a way to do that online, so I had to call and wait nearly half an hour to get an agent on the line. Then once I gave her all the information, she had to send the activation signal to the unit about 4 times before it worked.

One more thing. If you notice your audio level from the satellite is low relative to the FM radio's level, make sure you read the addendum to the manual that tells you how to raise the level. The default audio level is low so I suspect all Prius owners need to turn the level up.

Originally I wanted to have both units tied together with the support brackets, but it just wouldn't fit in one big unit. So we just tucked one at a time in there...there was a good amount of space...and they're just stabilized by some of the wiring. My boss had his hands up in there, but I could see a HUGE amount of free space in there. And after driving all day on the highway, then around town, I'm happy to report that nothing is rattling around.

The junction box we unscrewed and pulled forward a bit. Once it was pulled forward and a little to the right, was he able to get his hand back there and snap the plug into place behind the head unit.

I did print out that addendum and it worked great. Too bad by default the Toyota unit is on the low setting. But its easy enough to change.

Sirius tried charging me $15 to change radios and told them to screw...I asked for the supervisor. The first time after waiting 15 or 20 minutes, they hung up on me. Then the second guy apologized for the inconvenience of the hang up and said he'd take care of it. "The only thing will be a $15 charge for this switch..." At that point I told him I'd like to talk to HIS supervisor and it was absurd that they'd want to charge me anything as I've been a customer for well over six years. He said..."ooops, there's a note we can waive that fee for you." Of course when I turned the radio on, it wasn't activated. I called a third time and the gentleman named Larry got it going in three minutes. He was great...and he never asked me to pay any fee.

I had it on all day today without any cut outs. I stuck the antenna right behind the stock antenna in the center of the car above the hatch.

one question about the satellite radio hook up: can you still have a saved air time like on the external Sirius units or do you lose that capability when you hook it up internally??

sorry, what i'm basically asking is if you can still pause live radio. with my external unit, i pause the radio when i need to make a call and can replay it when i'm done...not having missed any programming. that's what i meant by "saved air time"...

can you do that with the internal hook up? b/c if that's the case i'll get rid of the darn external one in a flash!

The SCC1/TOY-SC1 combo does not have pause and replay. Just live (give or take 4 seconds) broadcasts.

yup...no really special features to speak of. The draw of it is the integrated interface, but I think I like some features of my five year old SIRPNP2 radio unit. There's no fave tunes, no mute, just three pages to add favorite channels. But it's integrated and that has the most value for me.

I just had the SCC1 back order date changed to unknown from Crutchfield (I already received the TOY-SC1) So I canceled it and I found them in Chicago at TSS Radio[ tss-radio dot com]
The guy I talked to said he thought Directed was going to a different Mfr and that is why you cant find these right now. I have 5 Sirius radios so I am not going to buy an XM account.

I have the same set-up installed in Denver area by Car Toys (by the way, if anyone has a Car Toys in your area they seem to be able to get these). As with all Toyota boxes, mine was set to "low." The installers had no idea how to fix that. After some internet searching I found the addendum. I tought the installers - told them I hacked the code (LOL!). They were duely impressed.

If this thread had been out a month ago I probably would have done my own install.

One note of caution - if you run the antenna wire under the rear hatch gasket to hide it, be careful where it bends over the sheet metal flange the gasket plugs onto. My antenna wire appears to be cracked there - I lost Sirius this weekend, and moved the cable to a new place and straightened the kink - presto, it works! But it isn't fixed - I suspect it will not last, and since it's under warranty from Car Toys they can fit another antenna and wire.
