I tried searching in the forums but couldn't find an answer to this. I just purchased a used 2005 Package 5 Prius and the keyless entry won't work. I have unclicked the button below the steering wheel that disables the keyless entry. Even so, whenever I press the unlock button on the remote, I get a quick red led that lights up in the corner for half a second but nothing happens. I know the battery isn't dead as I popped into a dealership real quick and they tested it to confirm this. Do I have to reprogram the fob or something, and if so, how would I do that? Thanks!

When you get in the car can you power on with the FOB in your pocket, or do you have to insert the FOB into the dash slot?

There should be two fob's for the car. A possibility is that these fob's were lost and others improperly programmed to the car

My car only came with one, and no, it won't turn on when in my pocket.

Also, when I try to start it by holding the break and pressing the power button (with the fob not in the ignition), the car beeps at me with the red car and key signal showing as well as the yellow key and exclamation point on. When I do drive the car with the fob in the ignition, I get the red flashing car and key symbol all the time.

Just a quick couple of questions: Can you lock and unlock the car doors using the remote (the key fob)? Does the red light come on when you are locking/unlocking?

the lock and unlock doesn't work, all that happens when I press the lock or unlock button is the small red led shows up for about half a second but nothing happens. Same for the alarm button.

A quick question regarding your FOB: on the back where the raised Toyota emblem is, is this emblem black or silver?

The silver emblem is the correct FOB for SKS. The black emblem - same color as the rest of the fob - is for non-SKS Prius cars

I have the silver emblem. The dealer gave me the fob along with a spare regular cut key (it isn't a toyota key, looks like a copy or something).

I even tried the whole program fob thing (i know its for adding a new one) but tried anyways. Still didn't program.

Not really sure whats going on, but thanks for the help so far. Also, I have the sks button not pushed in. This is correct right?

I'm not certain what is going on here, but it is almost exactly what happened to me two weeks ago when I rented a Prius. Easy for me, though, I just returned it (after replacing the battery, unnecessarily).

I believe the key fob was not properly programmed or either the car's SKS transceiver or the key fob are damaged. The dash board lights are telling you that the car's SKS is not finding a key fob. I thought the red light on the key fob meant the key fob's battery was losing its charge, but it may also have another meaning. Please review your manual for a bit more information.

Just to clarify: The SKS button underneath the steering wheel is a "shut off" or "disable" button. This means that you are disabling or turning off the SKS system when you depress the button. If it is "out" the SKS is on; if the button is "in" the SKS is off.

Yeah I figured it was supposed to be depressed. Another funny thing about my fob is that i cannot slide the release button on the top to release the key. It seems to be jammed or stuck shut.

Did you buy from a Toyota dealer, another car dealer or a private party? If you say a Toyota dealer, please list the name, because it is one we may want PC readers to avoid.

It was another car dealer, Framingham Auto Mall in Framingham, MA. I have nothing but bad things to say about them, including their unprofessionalism as well as their terrible customer service. The only plus is they have great prices on their vehicles.

They didn't even give me an owners manual, of all the cars, this is the one you'd want it for. They are ordering me one because I complained that it didn't come with it. Also, they gave me the car with a 1/4 tank of gas, I had to complain in order to get a $10 gas voucher which filled me up. In addition, after I purchased it, they made me wait 4 days for them to detail it (which I don't even know if they did), as well as give it an oil change and get it registered.

It sounds like the dealer just gave you a used FOB to just get the car started, especially since he gave you a extra cut key to open the door when locked. Sounds like he's too cheap to buy you 2 new FOB's and have them programmed to your car. Somebody here correct me if I'm wrong but I believe even a dealer is unable to program a used FOB you have to buy brand NEW ones and have the Toyota dealer program them for your car.

Do almost all dealers, whether it be private, other dealer, or a toyota dealer, always give you two fob's? I don't want to buy another one if I don't have to. I also find it annoying that the button release on the fob to release the key is (appears to be) superglued or something and cannot be switched to release the key.

An honorable dealer should give you 2 FOB's since that is what comes with the car when new. If they get lost you have to buy 2 new ones from Toyota and have a Toyota dealer program them. I believe i am correct in this. Sounds like this guy gave you a USED FOB which can only be used to start the car if you insert it in the slot.

Well thats crap, because I paid for the car to have keyless entry. I will go to a local toyota dealer tomorrow and have them program me two fob's. I will then send the bill to Framingham Auto Mall. They told me to do this since they can't fix the fob's there. Not surprising though since I didn't even receive my owners manual, should be coming soon though since I had to force them to order me one. Hopefully it is the right manual for my package 5. Other than all this, I can't seem to find any other things. Car works great, average 44.5 mpg on my first tank so far.

The car also has a slight pull to the right (tires are inflated properly at 35psi in front and 33psi in back and have to have the steering whell maybe 2degrees to the left), but this doens't seem to be that much of an issue at all... Perhaps new tires or an alignment could fix this.

I bought my car lightly used (ex-demonstrator, had been assigned to the workshop manager at the dealer). I got two key fobs, both of which the key can be extracted from, both of which work. The 'spare' fob has a small metal tag on the keychain with a five-digit number, which is the correct key number for ordering new keys. My car is regular non-SKS - we don't get SKS over here.

The amber light on the fob comes on whenever you press a button on it. The battery's low when the light doesn't come on.

My recollection is that the fobs and the real key that inserts into it are quite expensive. You'll probably find the seller glued the fob closed to stop you finding out there's a blank in there - or a key to a different car.

If you don't have the correct key number, a Toyota dealer may tell you they can't cut the right keys and you need new locks. That's not going to be cheap.

The key came with a plastic tag with paper underneath. Its about the size of a 1/4 of a dollar bill. It says year, make, model, body, color, and on the bottom it has a reorder and a number/letter combination below it along with a phone number. it also says SID SAVAGE A.D.S.I. which I'm not really sure what that means. Not sure if that number/letter comibination (which is 5) is the correct number you are looking for.

Sorry to butt into the conversation, but did someone say that any key fob can be used to start the car? In other words, you can insert any prius fob into the "ignition", push start, and the car goes to ready mode? I'm asking because I just have one fob, and would like to have a spare. It doesn't matter if the spare won't open the door, I just want to be able to start the vehicle with another key. (I plan to get another key cut to open the door with).

    Regards,
    Dave

A google search turned up Sid Savage Auto Dealer Supply.

Apparently they supplied the actual tag.

Strange, I'm just gonna go into the toyota dealership tomorrow and have them fix it, was originally going to request for 2 fob's, but I don't want my original dealer to charge me for another. If I buy a fob online, will i be able to program it for keyless entry, or will it only program for ignition? Thanks.
