OK, I"m sick of hearing car and truck ads that say "hurry before they are all gone!"
Or......basically leaves you with the impression that there is a frenzy of people trying to buy them and you better hurry up.

If that was true, why are they spending thousands on ads every 30 minutes and driving you crazy?
    Isn't word of mouth enough?

After all.. there are only so many to go around and at those prices everyone will scoop them up right?... why the need for all the ads?

I get sick of them hype, the excitement, and the lies.

How many Toyota Prius ads do you see?
Not many... and when you do, they don't give that false illusion but merely shows you the car.

Another is ads such as being bombarded with "buying Gold"
Why are they spending thousands trying to convince you to buy their Gold?
If its so good to have an keep because the price is going up.. then why are they selling theirs to you?... Why not keep it?

Fact is, the cannot sell at a good price unless they can create a frenzy of buyers.

Funny how the stock market seems to do the opposite of what the news tells you its going to do right? They have to create buyers or sellers so they can do the opposite and get the best price!

    Lies and propaganda!

Most things you see on the ads are opposite in reality.

Any time someone spends tons of money to convince you of something, beware and consider " why is it so important to them that they advise me of this?"

Most of the truly good deals in life are never advertised unless its a loved one that tells you.. they are secret or you have to be in the right place at the right time, or you have to think on your feet and use your common sense rather than listen to ads and propaganda letting others think for you and impressing you to believe what they want.

Isn't that where Snake oil salesman came from?

Those who have good deals don't go to you... you go to them!

Ok.. I feel better now... thanks!

I realize that it's easy to declare 100% accuracy in hindsight, but somewhere floating around here I have multiple posts in which I predicted that when gas hit $4/gal car ads would stop showing fast, heavy, muscle-style driving and focus on their EPA numbers. And then when the EPA rating was revamped I predicted that the ads would stop showing the combined mileage and only show highway mileage. It's all spin and marketing.

    That's what drives me crazy.

I record ALL shows that my wife and I watch, Just to fast forward thru ALL commercials, we skip opening and closing credits also. There is only approx 46 minutes of real show content in a 1 hour show. The rest is Crap, Drivel, and credits! When my parents said TV will rot your brain, I really think they were refering to the commercials.

Besides you can watch 4 hrs of TV in 3 hours with a good fsat forward button!!!

In the same vein, as soon as the Newscaster says coming up next.... I immediatly switch the channel to another Newscast that is not self promoting themselves into the ground. As soon as that one starts... whoops, new channel!!!

My life is much less stressful!

Really sad part is I have been an Engineer in the TV industry for just under 40 years!!! I think I am going to Hell!!!

I'm still waiting for DAR in my car "Digital Audio Recording" so I can prerecord what program I want to have while I drive home from work.
    I love good talk shows.

As you know.. the best progs don't always coincide with your travel time.

I"m sure all the commercial lobbyists are trying their best to block it.

Hurry to your local Ford dealer! These trucks won't last long!

On Labor Day weekend, 2006, my GF and I went to check out the Ford Focus at a nearby Ford dealer (I bought the Prius a few months later). They only had one hatchback Focus and it was an awful color. They literally had over a hundred trucks on the lot, most of them were discounted $8k to $10k and no one was there to buy them. The salesguy spent time trying to show us a F150 and a Sporttrac even though I made it clear that I wanted a commuter vehicle. I bet some of those trucks are still there on the lot even today.

My favorite rush now commercial has to be the ShamWow guy: "And for the next two hours, if you call you can get double the order, but hurry we can't do this all day"

That commerical runs every 20 min on some cable channels.

It's a marketing ploy called "illusion of scarcity"
It's touted as the way to get people to make the decision to buy, instead of putting it off, and maybe deciding not to buy.
Recognizing it is how you stop playing their games.

    Way to go, Windstrings! :)

Plus when you put it off, it gives you time to see what the competition is all about as well as any negatives.

Get people hyped up on emotion, hit the iron while its hot and hope they don't engage their brain or have time to ask their friends what their buying experience was there!

Make them feel like they are not part of the all knowing mindless crowd and that your missing something if you don't join in!

Not a car ad, but the ones put out by the corn syrup lobby got me.
Every time they stated it's fine in moderation, I wanted to shut, "But it's in effing everything."

Even though I"m not the brightest bulb on the block, sometimes I'm not in the mood to have my intelligence continually bombarded and insulted every time I come out of my cage and turn on the TV or Radio.
Who do they make these ads for anyway... Kindergartners?

I've discovered that on an intellectual level, ads target either the retarded or the very young... the reason it appears that way is because people make decisions based on their emotions alone rather than sound reasoning. That puts their IQ score very low.

The most expensive ads out there say very little about the product and spend most of their effort getting you to laugh or getting your attention in a shocking enough way that you take notice or appealing to some other emotion like your sense of pride or team spirit or other value system people use that over rides their logical judgments.

Think about the superbowl ads.. they are the worst about being truthful, informative and factual... but they do indeed carry good entertainment value.

Some things in life indeed defy logic, like family ties, religious beliefs and other emotional/spiritual bonds.
But IMO buying a product should first be about logic, then emotions next.
If its the other way around, you may pay a dear price.

There is a reason the car salesman wants you to sit in the seat, feel the wheel, take it for a spin, hear the engine, listen to the sound system, suck in that new smell!... all before you discuss how much the car cost.

Without that emotional bond and connection, many products have little to stand on and they know it.

Toyota is not without emotion too, but its founded on solid facts and a sound track proven product first.

All of us are emotional beings... thats why logically, its silly to get bent out of shape about these goofy ads, but emotionally, its quite silly that we have been reduced to this and that "dear price" bleeds over to us all.

BTW... we pick our politicians the say way.. .but thats another subject.

I don't have a television except to watch DVDs while jogging on the treadmill. Usually lectures from The Teaching Company, but right now I'm between lecture series and I'm watching DVDs of Cirque du Soleil. So I never see car ads.

I don't think so. Most of the programming is far more damaging to your brain than the commercials. And the medium itself requires you to sit motionless, stare at it, and exclude all thinking.

You can do this already if you don't mind a day's delay or so: Most every radio program is available now by podcasting. I have iTunes automatically download my favorite radio programs (The Jefferson Hour; Fresh Air; Car Talk; Democracy Now; etc.) and then I put them on my iPod and listen in the car or around the house.

iTunes is free, the poscasts are free, and I'm sure you can use a different MP3 player if you don't have or want an iPod. There are probably other programs that can manage the automatic downloads as well, or you can download programs from the web sites of most radio programs.

True Daniel.. I will have to figure out how to do that... my phone may be able to suffice for that "its the dare".
I think thats the wave of the future... you don't see commercials yet about it.. but I see the demand already.

As cell phones interface with the navigation console to do phone calls, even so the internet service via the cell phone will interface allowing progs and internet material to be heard... there may be resistance on "viewing" but audio should be easy.
Most of those types of programs are not super time sensitive... even politics can suffer a few days.
Seems its all the same stuff over and over anyway! LOL!

The ads shown in the NOVA DVD "The Car of the Future," showing kernels of maize appearing on a road, then instantly popping into full-sized dual fuel vehicles. The Frontline program (October 2008) "Heat" makes it clear that while Detroit may sell many dual fuel vehicles, there are almost no places to obtain ethanol (other than partial mixes) fuel. This is pure hyperbole and is terrible.

Alan: I do not know if cell phones have the bandwidth necessary for streaming audio or downloading large files. My phone does nothing but make telephone calls. But your home computer can download the programs, and you can listen on anything capable of playing MP3 files. If you have an MP3 player and a computer you are set.

i can't stand advertising. sure, there are plenty of logical, thinking people out there. but there are also a lot of emotionally driven people. marketing plays to those emotional people, because you can't use logic to convince people to buy crap they don't need, as quickly as possible, and to the greatest extent possible.

also, a lot of normally logical people fall such prey to their insecurities, that they will dispose of logic to fit in by having the newest gadget.
