Once a year. Same spot likeclockwork. For the past 3 years at 4:10am as I hit the loop sensor which makes the light turn green. I have to break-in a new "crime buster" Tustin cop. Doing 30mph in a 35mph zone. I must be drunk, right? No one goes 5mph UNDER the speed limit. Do I bother telling him "I don't have to hit the breaks for the red light if I'm going 5mph under". No, I just let 'em do his thing, & move on. Anyway, this was my 1st winter (and early spring) where all my tankfulls have been 60mpg or higher.

Just to clarify, he/she doesn't give you a ticket, right?
Only a "letting you go with a warning" sort of thing?

There is nothing to warn about. Driving under the speed limit is not illegal, unless you create a hazard by obstructing traffic.

I would expect the officer to apologize for the stop, wish you well, and send you on your way.

Don't forget the big picture, at that hour the cop is 1) Bored stiff and 2) In automatic pull over mode. The shock is probably finding the pulled over driver is coherent and well behaved.

Aye, I understand. Hence the quotation marks around it.

That's not the way most law enforcement types handle such situations. It's a temperament thing where they are in control (admittedly a necessary aspect of the job) and you must explain yourself to them, not vice versa. Don't expect an apology. They tend to shift to friendly conversation, give you a lame verbal warning (to justify the stop) then send you on your way.

My favorite example of this was having some nice person clown nearly run into me in town, taking my lane and forcing me to go through the opposite turn lane (empty) to avoid a collision. I knew there was a cop about a block back and was smiling as he came charging up with his lights on...until he pulled me over. When I got out of the car I laid into him for pulling the wrong guy over. He admitted he hadn't seen anything but me in the other lane. When I explained what had happened he told me I should have made a left turn instead...nevermind that it would have gotten me hit instantly by two lanes of traffic on green going the other way. He never said he was sorry for stopping the wrong person and letting the bad guy drive away...but he was smart enough not to write me a ticket which would have put him before a judge explaining that he had not actually seen what happened. Instead he gave me a ludicrous verbal admonition to do something that would have caused a major accident.

And if you want to increase your chances of getting stopped, drive under the prevailing speed, not over it. ;)

Twice now on the Jersey turnpike I was speeding (only about 70mph) in the middle lane and a cop pulled over the car that was behind me. Twice! I have a feeling if I was in my v6 Mazda it would've been a different story. :D

Many years ago I got pulled over by a cop after changing lanes. I was driving my Mom to work and changed lanes before preparing to turn left at the lights. Cop pulled me over and asked for my license. I was fairly young then but old enough to drive. His explanation for pulling me over was that I was very careful in moving into the left lane - he wasn't used to people making shoulder checks and using their signal. Go figure stop the driver obeying the law!

BTW Nice winter MPG Hill! I averaged 59.7 MPG this winter but as low as 55.5 for one tank.

I've gotten stopped a few times for doing 55 on the way home. Considering I get off at midnight and theres not a soul on the road, shouldn't be too bad right? Suspected DUI.

Never will i drink and drive after seeing what happens multiple times and the consequences.
