After my ICE water pump was replaced, I noticed the coolant was low -- they probably didn't purge all the air out, but I didn't get an overheat light so I think it was mostly full.

For the CHS pump, they've put me off again -- they say it's still on backorder for another week.

I finally got the CHS pump replaced. Wow, it's way quieter. More than just the grinding, the hum is much quieter.

However, the dealer doesn't seem to have mastered the air purge -- I checked it this evening and the coolant bottle is empty. I'll have them top it off tomorrow.

I didn't see any out-of-warranty replies.. mine's done this since it was in warranty, but at the time they couldn't reproduce. Now 4-5 years later, it still squeals predictably, but still no absolute failure. Just like fried bearings.

That's exactly what was wrong with mine. They towed it back to the dealer, purged it properly, and it's been fine ever since.

My 05 w/154000 is starting to exhibit this squeaky pumping sound. Should I have it replaced ASAP or wait awhile? Anyone knows how much it will cost to replace.

Since you have to pay for the repair, there's no point in replacing the pump until you get a check engine light or other warning light. The noise only happens upon startup and shutdown and does not impair drivetrain functionality.

The repair will probably cost a few hundred dollars.

I have brought my prius to the dealer 2 times for this problem. They tell me they can't hear the squeak and if they can hear it they won't fix it. I complained to Toyota and got no help. I thought of making a recording of the squeak.
Anyone have any ideas how I can get toyotas attention?

    Hi DD,

On my car its the worse after the noon time lunch run. If your car is like that then take the service writer out for a 15 minute drive after a 4 hour cold soak, and then turn the car off. It should squeel and surge, and be readily hearable from outside the drivers side front wheel-well.

Does not hurt to have the TSB printed out and present that too them as well.

FWIW, I had my 08 in for service yesterday. My VIN number is after the pump change, so reportedly I have the "new part". Still, the car lets out a squeak or two from the area of the CHS water pump when powering up on cold mornings (typically below 30 F).

Hopefully the service tech is correct, "this is normal", "the old pump made a lot more noise", but I am not convinced. The last time I heard a similar squeak was when the bathroom fan was spinning its final few revolutions.

The noise actually happens while I'm stopped at an intersection too.

that's not the chs pump then. the brake actuator runs sometimes at a stop- or if it's a soft "honk" sound it could be the brake actuator tsb.

We are in a warm climate and noticed this problem only slightly up until now. It has now become more pronounced and we are at 63 months. Any hope for a replacement?

It seems I may have 2 problems, since I have both symptoms. Thank you. Now I just have to figure out what to do first cause the prius is due for a psd fluid change too. Thx for your help.

by the way, when I start pressing on my brakes, I hear a squeaking type of sound. Is that the actuator. I had to replace the brake actuator at 36,000miles because of the noise and my brake pedals depressed all the way down and was making a similar squeaking sound.

Back on the CHS Pump topic...my question is: How important is it to replace this pump once it starts making "the noise". My 08 has been doing it lately and I'm getting a little worried...the car has roughly 32k on it.

Mine's been making it since the mid 30k mile range, I'm at 111k miles on the same pump. It squeals when cold, but otherwise performs just fine. Just noisy, and sometimes embarrassing ;)

I watch the coolant temp on the Scangauge and my pump is still working fine even though it squeals on almost every startup/shutdown. I'm at ~ 26k miles.

Ok...don't have a scan gauge, but I'm no longer worried. I'll replace it once it gets to that awful squealing stage (thank you for the audio...), or just before I hit 60k (and the warranty runs out), whichever comes first. Right now it's tolerable...

Thank you htmlspinner and dogfriend. : )

Mind sounds like a cat fight that lasts 5+ seconds.

Since I haven't visited once a Toyota dealer with my Sept 2006 Prius, now's a good time.

My CHS has been squealing for over a year and of course it never did it for the dealer. It was quite bad where everyone would look at the car when I turned it on or off. Anyway, I finally left it overnight and they identified the problem (I wish I saw this bulletin earlier) and ordered the part. The squeal got to the point where it was almost solid and not intermittent (except of course it would never do it at the dealership).

The dealer also found a slight oil leak. So far these have been the only problems I've had, though I plan to buy the extended warranty since the current one expires next month.

Canadian Toyota dealer says there's no such thing as this TSB.

And he refuses to acknowledge a US document.

    Any other Canadians?
