I hope this isn't true!!! If direct conversion, that means $33k for base model in US. I can't afford that. I thought with all the competition it would be closer to $27. Guess I better start reconsidering snatching up an 09 for $22 fully-loaded (like my dealership keeps trying to get me to do). SIGH
You guys get them much cheaper in the US. You just can't compare different markets like this. Your base model will be much cheaper and I wager around the $23-24K people are expecting.
In Toyota Spain site initially figured 5 year /100.000 km (as in Toyota Europe site). After contact by e-mail with Toyota Spain they changed the warranty information just as it is in Prius 2G: w w w .toyota. es/cars/coming_soon/prius/index.aspx "Y puede usted estar seguro de que la baterÃÂa de alto rendimiento le durará tanto como el vehÃÂculo. Está cubierta por una garantÃÂa de 8 años ó 160.000 kms" hwell:
OK, that does it, I'll call Toyota Portugal monday morning, and if they don't solve this I will call Toyota Europe. I want to know what the heck is going on here with this warranty business. As if it was not enough for Honda to come up with a pseudo-hybrid a lot cheaper, it would be the end of the world if they also offered a more extensive warranty!
It's the same damn parts as used in California, where AT-PZEV rating requires a 15-year/150,000-mile warranty (except the battery can be warranted for only ten years). There's no logical reason why the warranty shouldn't be the same everywhere.
Our U.S. prices are so much less for a number of reasons. For one, our base is more "base" and all models have cheaper tires. I think the greatest reason for price difference is likely the VAT. U.S. prices are quoted pre-tax. If you add a 7.5% tax (like I would need to pay), then $23,000 becomes $24,725. You also have to add title charges, destination fees, etc., so it is highly unlikely that a $23,000 car can be purchased for anything less than somewhere under $26,000. I know it is still below Europe, but that's to our great benefit!
sure there is - warranties cost money. Why do you think all cars dont have lifetime warranty? Prius had big warranty start with in order to convince them that it is reliable... after 1 million sold, not so many might need convicing anymore. It might not happen right now with 3G, but eventually hybrids vehicles will have warranties like any other car.
Willster, What is current price in Netherlands for 2009 prius? Let's go base (Prius II), do you know? I can get one here for $22k no problem. Just curious to make better comparison. Thanks!
not sure whats happening over there where you live but over the past years warranty got extended where you got 5 years frame warranty now you get 8 years or even 10. warranty is getting higher and higher not lower. cars are getting more reliable every few years.
10 year warranty? for what car? Cars are not becoming more reliable, and warrant doesnt have much to do with reliability.
ok thats a lot off BS. look at seat after its taking over by the VAG group its now a better cars then before. and yes cars are getting better and better less electronic trouble less service intervals then before just because its possible because there build better. and you see that brands give longer warranty then others and then the others also follow that line maybe not in your part off europe because of the bad roads if a car gest more reliability then you can give a longer warranty periode so thats more then connected.
Or inversely, if you give a longer warranty you have to make the parts more reliable, otherwise you'll be incurring some nasty expenditure. It's quite likely that the cost to underwrite the longer warranty will be greater, though, which could explain the shorter warranty period, even if the parts are expected to last longer. The long warranty in the CARB states (California and other states who've adopted the same rules) is a statutory one to achieve the AT-PZEV rating; there are incentives for achieving better ratings. I surmise that the intent is to ensure that older cars still have their emissions equipment in good working order, and to encourage consumers to take a (perceived) risk on hybrid technology, because they know they won't be taking a financial hit if something does fail. That latter point is why Toyota should not be reducing warranties, at this stage.
when you build more relaible cars there is not higher cost involved to underwrite the longer warranty because there is less risk of problems. today people have more comfort and less fuel in every new model. so even if a cars runs for 10 years without a problem people still want that addaptive cruise contrrol that there 5 years old car did not have 5 years ago. and the price for petrol will go up anyway in time so you also want a better mpg car. only people that do not have a good incomeand lucky these are still in the minority then people will keep buying new cars.
A longer warranty also means a higher base price because the manufacturer would want to recover a bit of the cost in anticipation of a part replacement (which aren't cheap nowadays). In NA, standard cars always had a 3 year warranty with luxury makes giving a 4 year warranty.
i see cheap cars here like KIA that have better warranty then mercedes etc etc. and those warranty periode's have also be extended with other brands following that. maybe its a dutch thing.. not sure haha
Same here but Mitsubishi has the 5 year warranty (we're talking the new car warranty right, not the powertrain or emissions?). However, the fine print shows that for Kia, the warranty is not transferable.
KIA has 7 years warranty here and is only manufacturer that I know that has it, and it is only one some models. Fiat got 5 years on Stilo only. They use it as selling tactics as customers dont trust their vehicles. It doesnt mean their cars suddently became higher quality than 2 years ago. I would carefully read fine print as well, i know for the fact that Hyundai warranty here covers stereo for only 6 months for instance, there are 3 pages of fine print there. On the other hand Toyota covers 3 years, 100,000km on everything. VW has indeed upped their warranty, and it is still lower than Toyota's . I would love if someone offered full 10 year warranty on my vehicle, dont get me wrong .
