    Hi folks,

I've always been a Prius fan, but never bought one (came SO close in the fall of 2003 after having one on order for 4 months, but the dealer didn't want to give me hardly anything for my trade).

Anyway, it's seems hard to sell a car these days, so maybe trading is an easier idea.

I was wondering if any of you might want a little more room. I have a 2006 Mazda5...I get 23-25 mpg around town, 27 on the highway at steady 75mph, and 30 at steady 70mph. It's the "touring" version (sunroof, steering wheel controls, auto climate control), automatic, and has built-in navigation.

It's truly a nice-size vehicle...quite capable, seats 6, can hold a refrigerator, and is fun to drive (it's based on a Mazda3 platform).

If you reply and would like to see pics, I'll send you a link...for now (until I have a total of 5 posts?), the forum would not let me post the link.

It currently has just less than 80k miles, has tint, a tow hitch (just used a couple times to get a couple pieces of plywood from the hardware store), and an iPod adapter.

It has full synthetic in the trans, and had full synthetic in the engine until I retired a year ago, and now it's been changed regularly (every 5k miles) with semi-synthetic. Almost new tires and front brakes, and all maintenance up to date. I'm about to change the oil at 80k miles.

Now when I say trade, I pretty much literally mean that, as I don't have a lot of cash to pitch in...that means a Prius in the $9,000 to $12,000 range.

I live in Santa Fe, NM, and am willing to drive several hundred miles to make the trade.

    I'm the 2nd owner, and a non-smoker.

I really want the side curtain airbags, JBL would be nice.

    OK...any takers?

    Good luck.

I don't think you'll get a lot of positive responses with this crowd. Especially since the mileage would double the average Prius owner's fuel costs.

Good luck, I think this is the first 'for trade' post we've had and I wish you luck, though I suspect the audience you're targeting is a fairly unlikely bunch.

what is the cargo and passenger space of a 5 compared to a Prius anyway, I can't think they're a whole lot different as I remember the Mazda as being pretty small.

Hate to break your bubble, wsalopek, but I think you'll be better off selling it privately or trading on a new/used one. I traded my M5 on a new Pri. My M5 was fully loaded - navigation, sun roof, cassette, very low mileage, you name it. It has been sitting on the dealer's lot for 8 months now.

OK...December 2003, that must have been when I had my ordered 2004 Prius at the dealer, but they only wanted to give me about 60% of the trade-in value of the car I wanted to trade.

Anyway, the Mazda5 is significantly bigger...it can seat 6 in 3 rows:

    cargo volume / passenger volume:

    Mazda5: 44/98

    Prius: 14/96

Oops...well...interesting...pretty close on the passenger volume...not intuitive as the Mazda5 has a whole nother row of seats, a higher roof, and of course a lower rear floor as there are (unfortunately) not batteries in there. How could it be only 2 more cubic feet?

Right...I could never compete on MPG's...but for the Prius owner that needs may have changed to seat six, or haul more stuff around, etc, the Mazda5 seems like that perfect step up in size that creates a lot more utility while not having to buy an 18mpg "full size" mini van.

I have driven the Mazda5 a couple of times as rental cars and they are indeed fun to drive. It is a smart vehicle for people that need that extra space to carry bigger loads or transport 6 people comfortably. Good luck with your trade/sale. I think you are better off just selling it yourself. There are many good deals for used Prius with mileage around yours or a bit higher. Just look on eBay.

Your eyes are not deceiving you.

The Mazda5 has significantly more interior volume.

The 98 cubic feet number you give for the Mazda is for the first two rows of seats only. That's why it's only 2 cubic feet more than the Prius' two rows.

The Mazda5 interior has 142.1 cubic feet of space while the Prius has 110.6 cubic feet. That's 31.5 cubic feet or 28.45 percent more than the Prius.

    * * * * * *

The Mazda5 has a lot to offer. And yours looks especially nice. Good luck.

I've been looking at a Mazda5 to eventually replace our Chevy Venture. It seems in our family just when we think we don't need a minivan anymore we find out we're glad to have one. However a minivan would always be our second vehicle it would never replace our Prius.

The market is always tough for hatchbacks and wagons in this country, and the economy is making it tougher, so I'm exploring all possibilities, I do have it "on the market" as well as looking for a direct trade.

    Well...should a straight sell become a possibility, I'm asking $8950.

    Price research:

    Edmunds 'Private Party", clean -$9900.
Kelly Blue Book "Private Party", fair, good, excellent, - $9600, $10400, $11100.
