Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contracts

    In my case, I didn't discover PriusChat and this thread until a few hours after I had picked up the car and was bamboozled by the Closer (finance guy) into buying the warranty from the dealer at twice the price offered here. I had to go into the dealer the next day and the day after that and, finally, jump up and down and scream at the Closer before he canceled my warranty order and requisitioned a refund check.

    Can anyone tell me if this applies to used cars as well? I just purchased a 2008 certified used Prius with 9000 miles on it. The dealer told me I HAD to buy the extended warranty then and there--I wouldn't have the option later. I paid $1650 for the 7yr/100k bumper to bumper. Of course, now I know I got swindled and I want to cancel.

    My two questions: Can I still buy the warranty somewhere else before my 3 year warranty is up, even if I bought the car used? How do I cancel the warranty I purchased, do I go back to the dealer?

    Well this certainly has been a very interesting topic. Think I almost read post #1 through #1065

    A post mid 2006 mentioned that 'Diagnostic testing' was not covered under the 3/36k or Extended warranty. They said if Toyota ran a diagnostic test and it didn't result in resolving the issue.. they still charged you out of pocket for their failed attempt.

    I read through my 2009 Warranty book.. and it did not mention Diagnostic testing expenses either being warranted or not warranted. So any one know if Diagnostic testing is covered or not. My thought is that it should be a part of the resolution of the issue. Maybe I am wrong?

    Help! I need some advice.

    I've recently visited two local dealerships in the Seattle area and agreed to purchase a 2009 Toyota Prius (package 2) for $22,746 ($23,496 less a $750 cash rebate from dealership #2.

    Note: This price includes the destination fee.

    I signed a lot of paperwork (including the registration), but haven't paid them anything yet. The financing rate they quoted was over 20% (crazy!), so told them I would come back on Tuesday (Apr 14) and pay for the car in cash (after borrowing from my mother. Thanks Mom!). They gave me a single key to the vehicle, and the car's manual, but again, I haven't given them a dime yet.

    Previously, I had received an "Internet quote" from dealership #1 for $24,469 ($1,000 more). After receiving the quote, I visited them in-person, but I had promised a sales rep at dealership #2 that I would give him a last shot. I stepped outside dealership #1's showroom, called the rep at dealership #2, and told him the price. He asked me by how much he needed to "beat" the other dealer's quote, and I said by $1,000. He went away, called me back in 3 minutes, and agreed to the $1,000 lower price. When I told the 1st dealer, well, he went bonkers and started telling me how that price was "impossibly low" and that the other dealership was lying and was going to "trick" me by adding a bunch of other fees, etc. He even called them on the phone (in private) - Sounds like price-fixing to me personally - but he let me walk out the door.

    The second dealership honored the lower price without any tricks. (Well, he reversed the last two digits of the price, so it was actually $973 lower, but I'm sure that was an honest mistake.)

    The $22,746 price sounded reasonable. Do you agree?

    Anyway, what REALLY upset me was the warranty salesman at the second dealership. I agreed to pay $1,659 for the prepaid maintenance package. (4 yr, 55K mile, every 5K miles, with 3 major maintenances - 11 services).

    He then quoted me a price of (about) $2,200 for the extended warranty (7/100K), but said he'd knock it down to $1,700 since I was going to buy the maintenance package.

    When I got home, I visited Toyota's site and saw that the MSRP of the maintenance program (from Toyota) was $1,355 (The salesman had quoted me a "discounted" price of $1,659.) And I saw that the MSRP of the extended warranty was $1,850. The salesman had quoted around $2,200, but said he would discount it to $1,700.

    Question #1: How should I deal with this? Can I get a better (HONEST) deal on the service plan and extended warranty? I saw a site called the "WarrantyShack" referenced here somewhere. Is it reputable? Do they sell real "factory" packages? I didn't know that a 3rd party company could even do this. I thought you HAD to buy these things from the original dealer.

    Question #2: I signed a lot of paperwork, but haven't paid anything yet. Am I under any obligation to pay the dealership the amounts I originally consented to?

    Question #3: Is the price of the vehicle resonable? I assumed it probably was because the 1st dealer "blew up" and simply refused to match the price.

    I've never bought a new car before...I actually had to tell the warranty salesman, "I don't understand any of these details - Talk to me like I'm 6".

    Yes you can get a better honest deal on the service plan and extended warranty here. WarrantyShack is legitimate. It's really a Toyota dealer (Toyota of Greenfield, MA), and is authorized to sell both products. Go to the WarrantyShack links that Danny provided in his above post. And if you have any questions, call or email the PriusChat/WarrantyShack representative, Troy Dietrich (see my above post for all of Troy's contact information).

    I don't have your paperwork. But I believe that you are under no obligation to pay the dealership for the service plan and the extended warranty. You should be able to cancel both now without penalty.

    As an aside:

    (a) Regarding the service plan, I personally wouldn't get it even at the low price offered by WarrantyShack. It doesn't seem to be worth it at all.

    Nonetheless, if you do decide to get the service plan from WarrantyShack, be sure to confer with WarrantyShack as to who has to honor it. I believe that you have to check with your particular dealer to see if they would honor the service plan if you were to buy it from someone other than your dealer.

    (b) Regarding the extended warranty, your dealer is obligated to honor it even if you purchase it from WarrantyShack.

    Personally, I think that the extended warranty is a good deal if you purchase it at the WarrantyShack price of $1055 for Toyota's best and longest plan - Toyota Extra Care Platinum Plan 7 years/100,000 miles/$0 deductible. But you can get it at any time prior to putting on 3 years or 36,000 miles on your car. I think it's best to wait until you approach 3 years/36,000 miles to decide whether to get the extended warranty and which one to get in terms of maximum years/miles (you can save hundreds more if you choose a plan with fewer maximum years or miles, as may be appropriate for your driving pattern). WarrantyShack sells all of the various genuine Toyota extended warranties at similarly discounted prices.

    I think that the $22,746 price including destination charges and accounting for cash back/rebates is within reason.

    According to Edmunds.com, in the Seattle area the Package 2 Prius retails for $23,520 including destination and accounting for the $750 cash back, and buyers in the Seattle area are typically paying $22,480:

    I certainly haven't bought the car. I don't have any paperwork resembling a contract. I can't drive the car. They gave me a single key as a gesture, so that I KNEW that the car was not going to be sold to someone else.

    I'm definitely rejecting both the pre-paid maintenance agreement and the extended warranty. I'm pretty offended that they quoted me figures significantly higher than Toyota's own MSRPs. How can they do that with any kind of conscience?

    I liked the car salesman - I still do.

    I planned on writing a letter to the dealership, saying that their sales rep didn't just sell one car that day, that I would be back again for my next car, and that I would recommend the dealership to my friends.

    But, I must say, the experience with the warranty salesman leaves me with quite a negative feeling.

    It was nothing but a positive, exciting experience until that point.
    I'm very disappointed.

    Fortunately, I too DID read this thread.

    After signing all the paperwork the 'Closer/accountant' offered on paper Extended Warranty terms called Luxury, Premium, Value.

    But he told us that plans would be off the table if we walked off the dealership that day. Vehicle Service Contract offered $2,500 Platinum 72/100,000 miles $50 deductable.

    I mentioned that we would have preferred to review the extended warranty documentation a week before so that when he made his offer we would have made an informed decision. He gave us a Toyota extended warranty booklet and said he would give us until 30 April before with-drawing his final EW offer of $1,445, for Platinum 7 years 75,000 miles.

    He offered "We walked".

    Got a few telephone calls from Toyota Corporation regarding how we felt about the sales process. Told them the saleperson had great people skills and helped make the purchases process go smoothly ->> up to the point where the accountant offered the extended warranty - he needed a refesher course on warranty product presentations.

    Next day I got phone call from the dealership manager asking if everything was alright. I said yes the 2 Prius cars were a lot of fun driving.. we just had real issues with the manner in which the accountant tried to last minute pressure us into buying extended warranty - he did not mention that we had until 3 years or 36k miles to decide to buy it. He gave us only until the end of the month.

    Glad we had read here in the forum 'best practices' wait and see before buying the extended warranty.

    My experience at Al Hendrickson Toyota in South Florida was much the same. Dealt with their Internet Salesman, great experience, fairly negotiated price, that they did not bump up with hidden fees, etc. He was also quite knowledgable about the Prius and it features and gave me an informative walk-thru.

    But then a negative time with accounting guy. He sold me the extended warranty, (best was 7Yr/100K Gold Plus...more limitations, less for a rental, etc.), he told me it was $2200 and that he was throwing in the prepaid maintenance plan as a freebie. After looking at the paperwork I found that the Warranty was $1700 and $500 for the maintenance plan.

    Luckily, I found this site. I cancelled both those plans and bought the better Platinum 7Yr/100K from Troy for only $1055.

    This seems to be a recurring theme at Toyota Dealers.

    I recently purchased a Prius, in Florida, and I was interested in the Platinum Warranty through Troy for $1050, but I questioned whether it would be good in Florida since the state regulates car warranty's and the warranty through Troy is through an out of state dealer, as I understand.     It's my understanding that the warranty is fully valid. Troy was fully aware I was in Florida. I don't think they would sell the warranty in Florida if it were not legal and valid.

    I hope Troy checks in here and provides a little clarification on this though. You have me a little worried now.

    If I recall correctly Troy said that all Toyota dealers in the US have to honor the Toyota extended warranty sold by him. Doesn't matter who or where you bought it from. Toyota requires all dealers to honor it.

    But as to the Toyota maintenance plan, Troy said you have to check with your individual dealer to see if it will honor it (apparently some dealers don't like it and Toyota does not require dealers to honor it).

    To Boo, from what I have read, you're the man in the know when it comes to information about the Toyota extended warranty. I hope you can help me. I wanted a Prius but the best deal ended up being on a Camry Hybrid instead. Hopefully I won't end up with buyers remorse. Anyway my question is do you know if that warranty shack place handles extended warranties for Camry Hybrids too. I understand he helps support this forum and even though I didn't end up with the Prius, I did get a Toyota Hybrid and a lot of helpful information from here so would still like to support this forum if possible.     Yes, WarrantyShack.com sells the Toyota extended warranties for the Camry Hybrid too (in fact, I think it sells all the genuine Toyota, Lexus and Scion extended warranties).

    I don't know what the price is but I assume it's similar to the $1055 price for the Platinum Plan 7 years/100,000 miles/$0 deductible for the Prius because the the MSRPs of that Platinum Plan is the same ($1850) for both Prius and Camry Hybrid.

    Thanks for the information. From everything I had read here on Priuschat I new to pass on that warranty at the dealer. Will do exactly as you suggested in regards to warranty shack. Maybe I'll end up with that Prius when the wifes Jeep goes on down the road next year. Thanks again. Rick
