Does any one know if Toyota plans to offer the 2010 Prius with signal mirrors. This is a very nice safety feature that should be standard.

When you say signal mirrors, I am assuming that you mean "Turn Indicating Side Mirrors", as opposed to a mirror one would find in a survival kit, and the answer is no. As a means of limiting the end cost of the vehicles, they are not included in the Prius.

If you do a search here, you will find the threads that discussed it.

Not in the U.S., already asked and answered. It was left off the U.S. cars since it isn't a requirement and as Doug from Prius Team has said anything added adds costs to the final price.

Then make it an option. I plan to buy my first Prius as soon as it becomes available. Since I will be spending in the neighborhood of $30,000, wouldn't one think that I should get what I am willing to pay for. Wake up Toyota. Don't upset your customer base like GM & Chrysler.

Toyota doesn't make one item options like they do on American vehicles. It's either part of a package or it's not. Look, I feel these little things should be added to the top of the line model like the Prius V to make it more 'distinctive' than the lower end models. But as mentioned in order to keep costs down, even on the high end models, they leave stuff like this off which they feel isn't a requirement.

Honestly, there are so many others thing to love about the 2010 other than it not having turn signals in the mirrors, it really becomes not too big a deal. But rest assured, the Prius Team is taking notes on how many of us feel and seeing how they can make improvements/changes in the future.

Also, Danny has mentioned that down the road he may have the side mirror 'fascia' with the turn signals built into them sold in the shop on Priuschat sometime in the future. Considering other countries are getting them, I'm certain people on here will make the conversion.

If Honda can put signal mirrors and DRLs on their Insight, Toyota surly could have with costs spread out out over even more units of production. For us first time Prius buyers who are also car tech crazy people, this is an obvious misstep.

This issue has not been beaten to death until Toyota recognizes that they made a mistake not including these safety devices on a car that is supposed to lead the pack.

Thank you. Hopefully Toyota will get their head out of the sand. With the visability issues I have read about one would think that Toyota would at least address our concerns. I am not interested in the price when it comes to safety.

    :).

look at Honda pricing and Toyota pricing. Also, Insight has very poor equipment otherwise compared to Prius.

Also signal mirrors are not an safety feature whatsoever. I like DRL's but if you really want them, it is easy to add them later.

Buy them from a European Toyota spare parts counter and have them fitted locally. You say you don't mind paying extra, so spend away.

    Glad to be of help.

By the way, USA has the worlds cheapest Prius. Minimum price for a Prius in Australia is $37,400AU or $27,201US. Yep, when the 2010 as you call it or Gen III as I prefer to call it hits the showrooms in Australia it will have indicators in the mirrors but would you pay $27,201 for a base model Prius? Want something better than base model, you can have the only other trim level sold in Australia which is the iTech at $46,900AU or $34,76US and that is the current price not the Gen III, would you forgo mirror mounted indicators to pay USA prices? I have no idea how the Gen III will be priced in Australia, I haven't heard of the Insight coming to Australia either so the prices may well be higher for the new Prius than the current model.

Actually I think the mirror lights are safer because SUVs and trucks can see them in their mirror as opposed to the lower lights by the headlights.

Respectfully - I completely disagree with this statement. IMO they ARE a safety feature when used - but that's the rub. Many folks just don't know what that lever left of the wheel is for. But for those drivers have have side signals (as I do on my Lexus RX), including semis etc - they tend to great attention arousers for vehicles or pedestrians. Especially in merging situations. I'm pretty sure that they are mandated in Euro and some Asian countries.

Man - my feeling is - any feature related to safety; either for offense or defense is valuable. But..I agree - the need to balance the cost quotient. Perhaps as was mentioned in the 2010 Top Ten string, the "safety" model with all these options incl DRLS and side mirrors signals.

You know that Toyota and Doug's team got a LOT of things right when we're hitting matters as this....

    This one's for Doug Coleman:

Make the mirrors available through the dealer as an after market instillation. Thay way we have the option to install ourselves or have the dealer install.

There's 19 accessories in the 2010 brochure so who knows, it could happen. The thing that could make it a bit harder for a do it yourselfer is if the wiring in the US mirrors isn't pre-wired with a pin for the flashers.

I like a lot of others here on PC did the Turn Signal Mirror mod and at the same time added the autofold feature, the cost from Sigma + Shipping to Ireland was around $450 and i'm sure Toyota could have them installed on all Prius models for a fraction of that cost based on mass production and no matter what country you're in they are most definitely a safety feature, maybe there's bucks to be made from OEM add ons!!

Agree completely. Anyone who doesn't feel these are a safety feature has never had them.

Come on Muth....here's a new application.
