I'd like to add Sirius Satellite to my Prius, through the existing stereo. I've had the car for about 4 months now. I was considering paying the extra several hundred dollars to have the dealer do it or taking it somewhere else like the geek squad or someplace similar to install it. Any suggestions?

If the 2009 is anything like my 2006 with the JBL system it is easy. There are quite a few threads on this subject. There is one that is a PDF that shows step by step picture instructions. Sorry don't have a link, but use the SEARCH feature.

It took me about 45 minutes to install the XM-radio in my 2006 Prius. The hardest part was routing the antenna to the rear of the vehicle. I was quite hesitant in removing sections of the interior trim, but in retrospect it was easy.

If you have some mechanical aptitude I would do it yourself.

Here are the part numbers you need to add Sirius:

    PTS31-47060 Fit Kit
    PTS31-53060 Receiver

What is the difference between these parts and the TOY-SC1 interface and SCC1 receiver?

I don't know. Those are the exact part numbers from my service department though.

The PTS31-47060 Fit Kit and PTS31-53060 Receiver are the Toyota OEM radio. The TOY-SC1 and SCC1 are made by Directed Electronics.

Some of us think the TOY-SC1/SCC1 combo is the better choice. It's significantly cheaper and provides a 16 character display instead of 10. It's now only $119!! Read the forum and you'll see people are very happy with it.

Does anyone know if the Toyota part has been updated to allow scrolling titles or longer than the 9 or 10 characters I have read about?? I think the directed electronics parts will allow 16 character and scrolling..
My problem is that the Toyota dealership is buying and installing this for me. Is their only option to order the PTS31-47060 Fit Kit and PTS31-53060 ??

As far as I know, the factory kit is still the same one, and the dealer will install only it.

The only advantage I'd say the factory kit is the up/down keys jump between presets. The Directed one goes +/- channel instead.

In all other ways, the Directed one is superior.

If you don't want to install it yourself, you could still get a stereo shop to install it.

I'm kinda stuck with what the dealership will do.. They told me the car had it when I bought it and didn't tell me I needed to spend another $600 in parts and labor to get sirius ...
so they are putting it in at no charge...

Does the Toyota kit actually plug into the radio or does it transfer the signal over the air through the antenna like a FM modulator..??

The Sirius/XM kit plugs into a receptacle at the back of the head unit. No FM transmitter.

I'm not sure what the electronic issue was, but the current fit kit includes the fix for it.
