Called Toyota here in Little Falls NJ where I bought the Prius some 3 years ago. Was told that it would cost $424. to update the GPS. The update consists of a disk and instructions on how to use it.
This seems ridiculously costly. What say?

The DVD map upgrade runs around $250. Call another dealer.

Yes, go online and you can buy the disk for a lot less money than you were quoted. I have a 2004 Prius with the 4.1 version of the NAV and I find it works well for me where I live (Staten Island NY). There are no new roads around here and my travels don't take me to places where there would be new roads. If that does happen, I'll take along my portable Garmin which costs a lot less than the update disk AND it has the latest maps.

I use the gps in my nokia 3g phone.... and the maps are free from the nokia web site. If Toyota can charge that much for the gps they can give free updates. The updates cost them nothing, since they need to do updates for the car they're selling today. And they don't own the roads anyway, nor did they produce any of the info in the maps. They're charging that for a bit of formatting and they're getting away with it cause you guys bought your way into being a captive market.

Garmin also gives you a free update to maps for a limited time frame.

Does anyone know what version the latest map update is? I have a 2007 Camry and want to get the disk on eBay, but need to make sure I get the most recent one.

Version 9.1 is out now for the Prius. Maybe the same for the Camry. A new version should be out this fall, so I would wait a month or so.

If I've not mistaken, Toyota usually releases their Nav DVD around the first week of September, so v10.1 should be coming out very soon.

If you find the price too expensive, you can always keep an eye on eBay a few months later, or else pick up the previous year (v9.1) for a significant discount, likely from someone who upgrades.

Keep in mind there are different generations of DVD, which are NOT interchangeable. If you google it, you will find the part numbers.

I gave up yesterday. $250 for a CD update is just crazy(insulting actually). I Just bought a refurbished Magellan 1340 at Amazon for $40. Real time traffic. Online map updates. Portable. I'm planning on snagging the one that has the OBD info when it gets cheaper, too.

The updates don't cost Toyota nothing. Someone has to pay the licensing fee to the map provider (Navteq) in this case. If it's a flat fee, that cost still needs to amortized over many cars.

We have no idea how the raw data is formatted as delivered by Navteq and what kind of conversion, massaging, reformatting, etc. needs to be done by Denso, Toyota or whoever. Once that's done, someone needs to do at least some minimal testing, against that generation of nav unit. Also, I'd imagine there are some updates to the nav software as part of the DVD.

That said, the map update DVDs are FAR too expensive, but it's not a Toyota specific problem.

As for Nokia, them choosing to provide it for free is a strategic move on their part to get people to buy their phones. This is probably part of why they bought Navteq. See below:

Google Toyota Nav Disk. You can get them for a fraction of that on the web.

This one sounds like an awesome alternative. but as I read the Amazon page (and other reviews), I don't see real time traffic. How do you get it on this unit?

But how to burn ? Prior posts indicate nothing is readable on a Gen 5 burnt disk?

    Any hints?

Unless I read the specs wrong, these Magellan units simply need to buy an extra "Traffic Kit", for $30ish extra.

Wait until your car gets broken into for the GPS. THE most common theft nowadays is for GPS units, and the damage to your car will usually exceed the cost of your GPS.

I would never put in a portable GPS because of this problem. Even if they don't see the actual GPS unit-- but only the attachment-- the thief often assumes it is under the seat or in the glove box and breaks your window anyway. (A close family member is a cop so I hear these stories ALL the time.) Not worth the hassle!

Got a flyer from my dealer a couple of months ago.... A deal on the upgrade for $199... still way too much. Try salvage yards, brand new Toyotas get wrecked every day

I live in a neighborhood where half of it is less than four years old. None of it is on my gen three nav. I also have google nav on my droid where half of the new parts are listed but google maps is free and updated regularly ( a year ago only about 10% of the new neighborhood was displayed) so i will never spend a dime to upgrade the nav in the car. After three pri's i feel i deserve a freebie upgrade..., but then again i did get a $3,000 discount on my 2010.... but i also deserved that one as well!!!
