What Price Are you being quoted by the Dealer?

    Toyota of North Hollywood is claiming there are people on their waiting lists willing to pay $2,000 over MSRP. I smell bull crap.

    I know this stuff happens, it did on the TCH introduction. However when you guys on the left coast do this it just helps justify the east coast opinions that you guys are wacko. Don't do it!

    I just reserved a 2010 package 2 from a Washington dealer for ~$350 less than MSRP + $750 destination charge + $123 registration/doc fee
    Seems pretty fair for one from the 1st batch (scheduled to be at the dealer 05/21).

    Just because they mark up $5000 over does not mean they will sell for that. This just gives them more room to negotiate and make buyer feel like he got a good deal if he pays $500 or $1000 over sticker. This also will keep a few models on the lot so people can see them and if one sucker will pay they're happy. I myself would not even step into a dealer with such mark ups. Even if they got to the price I wanted to pay, I would feel like they will rip me off with service or something else in the future. I wonder if Toyota approves of these sales tactics ?

    In Oregon it is straight msrp plus the $750 destination fee. Time for a road trip? They will be on the lots to buy this Monday.

    I thought Toyota had said they wouldn't sell the 2010's until June 1st? Has that changed now?
    My dealer still says early June for me. I guess no one knows where the vessel Kentucky Highway is right now. :(

    I have purchased 15-20 cars in my life. Always at invoice. It is so frustrating to see the dealer making pure profit on the "new" 2010, especially in the condition our US economy is currently in. I live in South Florida and have at least 3 dealerships who will sell me the car at MSRP (no dealer fee), but I am trying to get someone to budge with getting closer to invoice. Any suggestions?

    yea, just wait for a couple months, after the backlog of people on the waiting list gets depleted, my guess is that the dealerships will be in the same situation they are in now with getting the 2009 models sold...

    The reasons dealers are going out of business in this economy is because they are not making a profit. If dealers are selling all their cars at invoice then in the long term that's not healthy for them. They have a huge investment. It's great to get a good deal on a slow moving car but dealers have to make a profit.

    I'm not sure if a "pure" profit is any different than a normal profit?

    I was told Oregon is in a different region than most of you so they can sell their cars early. They odnt have to follow the June 1st rule because most of our dealers have sold the 09's because everyone up here (who is smart) drives one. I am supposed to technically have my car Monday but may have to wait to Tues or Sat. to pick up. We will see if this is the case and I will keep you posted.
    Honestly though, if you in California are quoted high prices, I would fly one way up here and take a couple days off and drive back slowly. It will more than pay for yout rip charges and you will have a vacation, PLUS you get your car ealy. It is a "win win".

    We do not have sales tax here, added bonus but I believe they hit you up for that when you register.

    That's great that you will be able to get your car early! I don't even know when the cars for us will arrive at the port in New York. But for me to fly 3000 miles and then drive back would incur a lot of costs along the way. Plus my state is notorius for making out of state purchases difficult and not every state recognizes temporary plates coughmassachusettscough.
    We thankfully don't have sales tax but we do have to pay a lot to register the car the Prius will be about $6-700 for the first year! :eek: My 2009 Fit was like $600
    Post pics when you get it. You will probably be one of the first in the country to get one. :rockon:

    I hope but again, I will believe it when it happens. That is what the computer is telling my dealer so we will see. Thx :) Just remember, if I get my car before you do, mine will have already depreciated and yours is still newer :)

    IMO, Toyota does condone & approve of adding BS fees. These were added to my priority purchase in NJ:

    dealer ad/marketing fee $500.00
    title & licensing $241.70
    dealer fees $299.00
    tax $2150.76 (I don't know how this was calculated. It is more than the 7% sales tax.)

    I doubt the priority purchase price was at invoice so the dealer is making the holdback plus.

    This offer was good for about 2 days so I declined the offer. One day I'm going to stop at the dealer for a brochure. For laughs I think I'll ask for a quote.

    Dealer ad/marketing fees and dealer fees, that sound like double dipping to me.:rolleyes:

    How much for pinstripes, weatherproofing and scotch guard on the seats ??:D

    See the other (closed) thread on the marketing fees. Those were applicable to Priority folks only due to the different pricing structure. Normally they're buried in MSRP and we're unaware of them. They go to the region, not the dealer.

    Invoice is plenty of profit. There is holdback of course and that is enough to make a fair profit for the dealer. There are other incentives that the dealer gets in addition to holdback (from edmunds.com):

    "However, the standard dealer holdback is not the only form of financial assistance provided to dealers by manufacturers. There are many other types of holdbacks and dealer credits that may be available from specific manufacturers at various times — some of which consumers may hear about and others of which are never disclosed to the public — but each of which can have the effect of reducing the net cost of a vehicle to the dealer. These include:

    • Advertising credits
    • Flooring assistance
    • Floor interest reserve
    • Floor plan allowance
    • Transfer balance
    • Wholesale reserve
    • Wholesale credits"

    Generally these additional payments are made by the D3 to their troubled networks because of sales problems in moving excess inventory. The D3 have built too many, shipped too many, and thus the dealers have too many units sitting unsold on the lots. This is one of the reasons why both Chrysler and GM now are looking to reduce the dealer count by 25% ASAP focusing on only the strong stores and feeding them more.

    Rough numbers:
    GM has 6200 retail outlets
    Chrysler has 3200 retail outlets
    Toyota has 1400 retail outlets.

    Add Hooman Toyota of Long Beach, CA to this list. They plan on selling the Gen III at $2,000 over MSRP until December.

    Stay far away from these guys.
