    Hey All!

    First post!

Anyway, I purchased my first prius(2009) a few days ago and honestly.. the navigation system is garbage unless we mess with the KWI file. I've heard reports that people would load in the v5.1 KWI file and basically slipstream the disk. I tried my disk in my own prius, no go, but I also tried the disk in a 2009 Camry, and that works fine!

Has anyone attempted/played with the 2009 DVD Navigation system yet?(even though its pretty new??)

    Post your results!!

BTW.. I am using v8.1 of the North America DVD Nav... it works on pretty much everything but the 2009 prius.

    Thanks!!!!

Since you are talking about the KWI file, is your complaint about the age of the data, the completeness, or something else?

    So, Update:

I went ahead and used Alcohol 120% to make an image of my 8.1 disk, in addition, a 7.1 disk as well. Of course, the originals(both the 8.1 and 7.1) work in the 2009 prius.

All of these disks produced using Alcohol 120% and ImgBurn work on the 2009 Camry, but instantly popup as "Unable to read DVD" on the 2009 prius. I went ahead and tried using a second set of DVDs made by Memorex, then switched back to my Verbatim disks.. both failed on the 2009 prius.

Is there any special kind of copy protection that does not allow the 2009 prius to read the disks? Does anyone have any specs on the DVD-ROM reader thats inside the 2009 prius?

so your goal is to make a copy of 8.1 and run in your Prius?

And if the original 8.1 works in your Prius, why not run the backup copy in your Camry?

Am I missing something here? (BTW, I am not suggesting you to run illegal copy of software.... But just wonder why that doesn't work)

Try a different brand of media, the Prius DVD drive is picky. I know in the days of modding kwi files it always took some hunting to find some the media the Prius DVD drive liked....also burn at 2x MAX!

Do you know what particular brand/model of dvd media to use inside the Prius? I'm not even sure if the 2009 Prius uses the same DVD reader as the 2008/2007.. Any ideas?

Or wait for someone else to figure it out....my Prius is a 08 and I didnt get the nav so i cant test :(

The 5.1 KWI file is from a 2004-2005 Prius NAV DVD and will not work on a 2006+ Prius. If your trying to remove the lockout you wont be able to unless you add a switch to your speed sensor wire or get a LockPick from Coastal.

If you cant make a straight backup PM me and I might be able to help.

After much searching it apears that the 2006+ prius, has different loading.kwi gen 5 than the camry gen 5 (5.1). The secret menu in prius is in the display button not the volume button. And no overide feature is available that I can see.

In other words, no software override.

Did anyone find media that works in the Prius DVD drive? I obtained a copy of 8.1 and the burned copy works great in my '07 Camry but I get the read error in our '07 Prius. I believe they are both Gen 5 systems.

It's been a while since I've posted on my own post about this...

I've tried a number of DVD media and 3 different types of burners.. I have always hit an error when my Prius would read the disk..

I'm no longer able to test this :( While creating a new image from the navi dvd, my DVD drive decided to malfunction, scuffing and putting deep scratches into my navi dvd :(

I hope other users here on PC don't experience such a futile effort that I did :(

    Good luck!

    (I'm using a friend's 7.1 DVD)

I can confirm that under the best situations burning at the slowest rate both memorex and verbatim failed in Prius 2006 and 2007 (gen 5).
Prius 2005 (gen 4) had no problem even with faster speed and regular memorex media.. first try got it.

i verified the dvds 3 times and they work great in computer then I put it in the car dvd drive and got the error and took out and tested it. the DVD is now unreadable.. this is the weirdest thing i have seen.
Any backup DVD i put in the Gen 5 nav prius becomes unreadable.
needless to say that original dvd ver 9.1 and 7.1 works flawless.
I have tried an external LitOn and an internal Samasung drives all with correct book type.

    loumarjr you mentioned
did you have success with that setting on gen 5 prius?
first try or some didn't work?
I used verbatim 2.4x dvd+r DL made no difference..
do I need to disconnect the battery maybe?

I'm guessing the new firmware is checking the pressed DVD information to check for an original disc. If its something as simple as a name or number check you should be able to use a hex editor to "fix" the firmware. The only problem is finding what the firmware is looking for and editing it out or changing it to look for a DVD-R. We really need a good hacker look into this and fix it for us.

1)the ONLY difference bet copy and original is the track direction OPT vs PPT. there is no way to match that with current tech for regular users.

    2) considering what you say is correct about the dvd checking itself to be original... then why would the same copied dvd work on ALL other gen 5 cars but not prius 2006-2009

    3) lets say that the software is set to check only in prius which is very weird thing to do then the copy dvd with loading.kwi from an older model should be the workaround the protection... has anyone tried that?

if that loading.kwi from version 5.1 gen 5 dvd does not solve this then our problem is navigation dvd drive in prius being toooo sensitive just like the 2001-2003 cars. that would really suck and I have absolutly no way for it.

I also dont really get why it works in a Lexus and not the Prius. Same generation NAV just different car. Its even the same disc. I downloaded my copy from the net and people said it worked in the Lexus.

I am having the same problem with the 8.1 disc on a 2007 prius. I used a Memorex DVD+R DL disc and get a read disc error.

It's possible that the media determination algorithm in the servo firmware is sophisticated enough to know you have a copy.

Anyone gotten this to work on Prius 2006 up? If so, what media did you use?
