Not particular to 2010 Prius, but why all Toyota cruise control has an On button, then set switch ...

Why can't the system turn itself on when you set? Are there lots of overhead leaving it on? Thanks.

Its a safety measure, to make it harder to accidentally turn the system on. Requiring two steps, on then set, reduces the likelihood of that happening.

I think pretty much all companies work that way...certainly every car I've ever owned requires being turned on.

By design, to lessen the chance of accidental activation.

Thanks for the quick update. That seems a reasonable explanation, although without an On button, the system should automatically be off when you tap on the brake. So no harm done even if it's on by accident (assuming you do not habitually fumble with the switch).

So I have to assume there's a lot of overhead turning/maintaining cruise control on?

In the case of the Prius, there is no overhead for cruise control. The Prius has a drive by wire throttle; cruise control is just software in the ECU.

As the other posters said, the ON button is for safety. It makes it harder to accidentally invoke cruise control, and also makes operation consistent with older cruise control systems that were add ons.

I think the real issue is that there should be a separate indication for Cruise Control being activated rather than just being on ... to clarify ... when you turn on Cruise (w/o setting it) the "Cruise" light illuminates, but when you actually set the cruise there's not a separate indicator.

That is where the issue is imho ...

The Gen II car and all other Toyota vehicles I've ever had experience with simply illuminates a "CRUISE" light when the cruise is turned on and has no seperate light for it being set...

I think he was reading the other thread where roseyrose (I can't remember the exact screenname) had the front glass deflector of the solar moonroof chipped and cracked.

Not in the '09s and prior it doesn't ... you turn on the system and "Cruise" comes on in the digital cluster ... when you hit set on the stalk, nothing changes in the digital cluster ... "Cruise" is still illuminated like prior to setting.

Owned Toyotas in past, and on my current Lexus - always been a (small) irritant - having the "cruise" indicator light in the dash come on, but nothing to show when it's set/activated.

So this is good news (minor, but a nice add by Toyota).

I assume that the '10 Prius has the typical Toyota stubby cruise stalk on the steering column. Small multifunction lever on the steering column - on/off, set, res, cancel - at the 4 o'clock position under the wiper stalk. Hope so, as I feel the Toyota's cruise lever is the easiest out there - nice feel and easy reach...fingertip away.
