    Some recent News....Cutting U.S. Allocation???

Toyota could trim U.S. Prius allocation

    05/26/2009, 8:59 AM

In response to a combination of heavy demand for the recently redesigned Prius[IMG] in its home market of Japan and reduced demand in the gas price sensitive North American market, Toyota says it is considering shuffling its production allocation. Though the first batch of new Priuses will still make the overseas trip from Toyota’s[IMG] two Japanese plants, some to-be-built Priuses might stay in Japan.

Toyota will see the cars where they can make the most money. After making a loss this year I'm sure they will be even more aware of that than ever. Selling them in Japan means no currency issues and saves paying to sail them half way round the world. I do think they should just build more tho!

I like the idea of the Gen 4 including space technology from the iQ. This makes total sense. Reducing size and weight is an obvious way of saving more fuel.

Gas continues to rise here so lets see what happens. I fear the Lexus HS looked great when gas was $4.00 last year but not so great since it is still around $2 (regular).

Bad news for those US buyers waiting to buy a 2010 Prius. It makes sense though with current currency exchange rates.

Toyota may cut back U.S. Prius allocation as demand in Japan soars - MotorAuthority.com

Buyers in the U.S. looking forward to purchasing the new 2010 Toyota Prius may have to wait longer than they initially bargained for, following strong demand for the latest hybrid in Japan. Going on sale just a week ago in Japan, the third-generation Prius was a hit before it even descended on showroom floors, with Toyota already sitting on 80,000 advance orders for the car.

Toyota’s original forecast was to sell just 100,000 units of the Prius in Japan for the entire year, but with this goal almost in sight after just a week of sales company execs are now considering reserving more units for Japan at the cost of international markets........

Yea ... and since they sell the Prius at a loss (according to Bob Lutz), undoubtedly Toyota will be in the poor house in no time.

So does this mean we will be seeing price premiums for 2010s without any discounting in the near term? :(

I hope this is not just to try to boost marketing and demand efforts because the economy is not going to be picking up soon and the overall auto supplies will be at a glut with the domestic makers going under.

Gas is going through it's normal seasonal price increase. It does this every year at this time. Just like diesel fuel goes up in the winter due to increased demand for fuel oil.
We might very well see $3 a gallon in a month or so. BUT it's supposed to come down again after the summer. There isn't any wild speculation driving up the price of oil right now, like there was before.
Gas dropped to wonderfully low levels for a long time but gas won't remain under $2 a gallon. We are $2.41 for Irving (no name brand) gas. it's still cheap, too bad I can't lock in these low prices now. ;)

Sounds like a pure business decision. If Toyota can make more money per car by selling them outside of the U.S. then they should do so...

    Keith

(Maybe I should just forget about buying a 2010 Prius and just buy Toyota stock.)

Is this really a problem? I'm use to every car manufacturer making more "profitmobiles" whenever there is money to be made from making even more. Is Toyota getting out of that business?

Not going out of business, just finding demand higher than the current factory and supply chain capacities.

I'm use to those being solved quickly when there is money to be made.

Hopefully it won't turn in to last Summer's fiasco ....

Nationwide shortage. People calling across the country to find certain package / color. Waiting list support group in the newbie section here. 3 months wait typical to get a 2008 Prius.
