We know the ICE stops at 70km/h or below and it's easy during such 42km short distance.
A 70km/h speed is too slow at Japanese highway, so he drove 74km/h or above for the 1000 miles.
I believe I've never heard of the 1000 mile tank all highway driving results before.
    Has anyone done it?
    Please let us know.
I know her results are super!
But, she never drove on highway during the challenge.
You can refer it from the following thread.

No, he never ran out of gas.
The final stage was from 911 miles to 1042 miles point, 131 miles.
There was enough (22% of full) gasoline remained in his tank, so he could run for 2000km(1243miles) or more if he had enough free time.

I love it. He didn't run out of gas but ran out of time and maybe patience. :p

With all due respect Ken, there is not much of a difference between driving at 70 km/h and 74 km/h, is it? Yes, the consumption will be lower due to the ICE not running ever, but the difference will not be such as to put those 34.5 km/L () as an impossible mission, far from it!

You can not say you did highway driving just because you drove in a highway. You can talk about highway driving when you drive at highway speeds, and that for me has to be at least 90 km/h if not more...!

Driving at 74 km/h on a highway here is asking to be run over by a truck or by another car driver, it's insane. I did once go at 70km/h (the MFD shot I posted) just to see how far the Prius would go on consumption, but I was dead scared looking at my rear view mirror all the time and had my 4 hazard lights on all the time. The minimum required speed here for highway is 50 km/h, but really, driving at less than 90 km/h is nuts and VERY DANGEROUS.

Again, driving at 74 km/h is not highway driving, please. What's the difference between driving at 74 km/h on a highway or at 74 km/h on a local road? I'll tell you: on a highway you can drive at much stable speeds, less stop and go, no crossings, no stop signs... this is called cheating highway...

I do mixed driving on my way from home to work and back. About half of it is highway driving. And I mean driving at around 100 km/h, not at 74 km/h mind you. My personal record for one tank is 3.7 L/100 km or 27 Km/L for a total of 1306 km or 811 miles driven. This was done with 45 litres of gasoline. I don't put my car on a device to hold the tank up. I put gas on level field gas stations, all gas stations here have levele ground.

I'm not here to brag about my records, I have other friends in my site who can do just the same as I do in regards to fuel autonomy.

All I'm saying is that this challenge seems to had been more about "who can carry more fuel onboard" than really for who can do the best consumption. The guy filled his Prius with 60 liters for crying out loud!

In notime someone will remember to add an extra tank with 500 litres inside the trunk and say: "look a new record of 10000 miles with one fill-up!". What matters is the fuel consumption.

On a level field making 3 L/100 km at 74 km/h seems not to be an earth shatering record to me, that's all I'm saying, and definetely I can not say the extra aerodinamic kit on his car had anything to do with it. Show me wind-tunnel certified testing with a CX lower than 0.26 and I'll admit I'm wrong.

    Ah... now we're talking... Thanks!

Are you familiar with the 71km/h(42mph without speedometer offset) barrier?
We are using "highway speed" as above 42mph barrier speed here in PriusChat.
    My math is...
    1306 X 3.7 / 100 = 48.3 liter used

    Yora's case is...
    1677 / 34.5 = 48.6 liter used

The fuel usage was almost the same, but Yura exceeds the 1000mile barrier. That's the news.

Yes, but still I don't think his mark is something to brag about.
It's only my opinion of course, but I've tried hard to explain it.

Never heard of it, and it really sounds stupid, sorry.
Saying that rolling at over 42 mph is highway speed is one of the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.

On most countries we have at least 3 speed limits enforced by law: city, open road, and highway. Here in Portugal it's 50 km/h, 90 km/h, 120 km/h (and most of Europe has similar values).

74 km/h doesn't even break the open road speed limit, and sure as hell nobody drives bellow 90 km/h at highway roads. Most drive between 120 km/h and 140 km/h. That's REAL highway speed.

You're missing a variable in your math. This is the correct math:

    1306 X 3.7 / 100 = 48.3 liter used, half of it highway at least 90 km/h
    1677 / 34.5 = 48.6 liter used, all of it open road at 74 km/h

Try it for yourself, drive your Prius at 74 km/h with a full tank and let me know how well did you do. I bet you can do as well as Yora's with no effort at all. On your standard car with no special "aero kit".

That's why I'm saying it's no news at all. He just did what no-one ever had patience to do. He's a very patient man, and I reckon that much. I would go nuts driving 1000 miles at 74 km/h all the time!

Have you ever driven on Japanese highway?
Do you know the speed limit on the most mountain area is 80km/h in Japan?
Maybe, it's easy task by anyone.
    Again, has anyone done it?
    Please let me know.
If no one did it before, that's the news.

I think you're taking this a bit too far and obviously personal.

They put together a competition and had some fun. They put out numbers that many do not reach for any number of reasons. Why you feel the need to nit pit with semantics I do not know. If the people on your forum are so much better at putting down high MPG numbers at "real highway" speeds then put together your own competition and beat the numbers our Japanese friends put down. Turn your hositlity into something constructive rather than bashing Ken who, by the way, contributes quite a bit of quality information to this site. :)

You could not be farther away from truth.

Absolutely agree on this, after all fun is what we need.

I'm not playing with semantics!!! Why do you guys pretend so??? Just because many of us don't reach some goal for any number of reasons, that does not mean we should find it something out of the ordinary, does it? Just because you can't do something doesn't mean it is not easy to do it in a different context and scenario, that's all I'm saying.

Again your very wrong in your assumptions, and you're the one barking at the wrong tree. We do have our MPG competition, and unlike some here, we don't go to other forums claiming something out of the ordinary was achieved because we realize there is really nothing special about our MPG numbers.

First off, I'm the first one to thank Ken for everything he has contributed not only to this forum, but to other forums as well. I know him from a lot more sites than just PC, I have learned a lot from him, and I hope to continue to learn.

Secondly, I just don't understand how a friendly discussion like this one, where different points of view are obviously being debated, can be interpreted as bashing. This post of yours really got me by surprise.

Finally, just because we owe Ken a lot, just like we owe a lot of people here, that certainly does NOT mean we have to accept and agree with everything he says. I for one refuse to do that. I have my own mind, and I'm free to think and to say what I think, as long as I don't offend anyone. And I am absolutely sure I did not do such offense.

    No I have not.

But sure as hell you can't state that highway speed is going 74 km/h (46 mph) just because you have a very low highway speed limit in certain areas of your country.
You are in an international site. You have people from all over the world here. Now tell me, where else in the world, be it USA, Europe, Australia, Canada, South America or whatever, where do you have highway speed limit below 80 km/h?

Your scenario is unique, or at least very rare, and this is not semantics, this is reality. If your scenario is only about 1% or less of the real world highway speeds, don't you agree that calling 74 km/h highway speed is far fetched when all over the world highway speeds are far higher? Be honest, c'mon, where else in the world do you have highway speeds below 80 km/h (43 MPH)?

I did not say it was something done before.
I said that fairly easy to do so, yes, that much I said.

I was even more surprised because some people here tended to relate the MPG value with the modified Prius body. There is absolutely no evidence that the modified body contributed to the final MPG result.

On a side note, sometimes people enjoy having real technical and proven data, like yourself and Bob Wilson very often present us here with. People enjoy having precise data with formulas and demonstrations showing why and how certain technical aspects relate on our Prius. I'm one of them.

What I find funny is how some of the very same people then turn passionate about a discussion, just like what happens here, and forget about the evidence, forget about the technical aspects, and just call it all "semantics". Funny isn't?

By now I guess whoever was to understand what I was saying has already understood me, and whoever did not understand will not do so ever no matter how long this thread goes. So I'll stop my keyboard on this one.

Hope that from all the people you at least Ken understood this discussion had nothing personal about you or me. Peace.

Three exclamation points and questions marks huh? I told you that you were taking all of this too seriously. Did you ever stop to think that if someone cannot reach this goal (similar to the ones in this thread) that this may be out of the ordinary for them? And as such they would find these results interesting to read?

There you go again being accusatory. Why don't you post them up here. Regardless of what you believe to be ordinary our extraordinary, many of us enjoy reading about such competitions or achievements. Simply put, we enjoyed reading Ken's story and felt it was a worthwhile posting.

You should try and re-read your posts and the tone they convey. They sound accusatory, exasperated and even slightly angry.

You certainly don't have to agree with everything Ken says and you do have a "right" to say whatever you feel like saying. Just as I have the "right" to criticize your thoughts. :)

No need to get bent out out of shape man. I'm just inputting my thoughts just as you have done. Have a great day. I hope your weather over there is better than ours today. :)

81.4 MPG with minimal engine shutdown is quite amazing. What was the average speed?

To quote: "Never heard of it, and it really sounds stupid, ..."

Uh, I guess I'm stupid too. But heck, just because some find "jerkwater" or "arsewipe" or "retard" or "dillweed" to be flaming ... to bad, eh? Yea, kindness ... must be over rated

Being stupid too, let me get this straight. "I can beat that mpg ... but I'm not going to show you ... but I do respect you ... but your discussion is stupid". Got it. Thanks for that.

    Hill,

Don't try to startup a fight with me, it takes two for that, and I'm not in the mood, sorry.

I said that calling highway speed to 74 km/h was stupid, I never said Ken was stupid, or that the discussion was stupid. Don't put bad words as if I said them, that's not nice from your part.

If I thought the discussion was stupid I would not participate in it, don't you think? I don't see Ken taken offense on my posts, so why should you?

We can also try to beat MPG records driving backwards. Anybody entering this competition? I bet no one ever spent a full tank going in reverse, so why not try it?

I hope you can see the irony of what I just said above... oh well...

Have you seen the Initial D anime? I am picturing Prius driven on those mountain-side highway and getting 81.4 MPG. :car:

your right about 74kmph is not a realistic speed.

but now whe all now it i guess its fine
