Getting first set of new tires (for me) - should I replace struts?

    I just ordered (in to local tire shop) a set of Potenza RE92 for my 01 Prius.

    When I bought this last year, the tires were crappy no-name, and mismatched. But had some tread left. I got 50 mpg average since then. But I have desired a new set of good tires.

    This Saturday the front right tire became a bit out of balance. Instead of fixing the 'one' problem, I decided to replace them all.

    So, in a couple days I'll be $414 poorer, but hopefully satisfied.

    Do you think I should see an increase in fuel economy?

    Anything else I should do or check once these get put on?

    Also, I'd really like to try and replace the shocks/struts myself. How wise is that? I have never replaced shocks or struts on anything. And what good ones are out there? I'd like to get some nice gas charged. The Prius is still very sound, and no squeaks. Except for the driver's side strut. It complains every now and again. :)

    You may well see a reduction in (or worsened) fuel economy with new tires, until they are driven several thousand miles. This is normal.

    What is the odometer reading on your vehicle? Do you see oil stains on the struts and shocks?

    I've changed the struts and shocks on my 2001 and it is not that hard to do. However this is time consuming because of the need to remove lots of trim to get to the mounting hardware. You will also need a good McPherson strut spring compressor to compress the coil spring prior to disassembly of the strut or shock. You definitely do not want a cheap spring compressor to come flying off the spring and hit you or the car. Serious damage or injury could result.

    If you don't have prior experience doing this then I suggest you obtain the repair manual info at techinfo.toyota.com and study it to determine whether you have the ability to perform that task or not.

    Regarding strut/shock choices, the only brands that I know of would be Toyota-branded parts (made by KYB ) from your Toyota dealer, or else KYB aftermarket.

    Sounds like more than I want to tackle.
    I got the tires mounted just now. Like night and day.
    Why? They said a belt had broken on one of my tires. :(

    They were mismatched, and not that good. So, I am hopeful of these new ones.

    Since getting these new tires I have gone from about 50 mpg to about 47 mpg. Just FYI.

    They do drive and ride very nicely, though.
