Shooting at Holocaust Museum

A guard and the suspect have both been shot, details are pretty sketchy at this point.

I find this story particularly interesting b/c my family and I were just in D.C. about a week ago. While we did not visit the Holocaust museum itself, we did have breakfast in the museum's cafeteria before visiting the Bureau of Printing and Engraving which is right next door. We even had a polite encounter with one of the security guys b/c my son and daughter were goofing off on the rear patio area and my daughter fell and scraped her knee. They required us to sign a release of responsibility.

But one thing my wife and I both took notice of was the very high level of visible security at the Holocaust museum compared to many of the other museums we visited. There were 2-3 officers patrolling the rear area and at least that many at the front/main entrance area outside. I have no idea how many inside, but at least 3 at the visible magnetron scanner area in the rear. We noted that the HM must be considered a pretty high risk facility for terror attacks.

It certainly appears that the security system worked well in this particular case though it's unfortunate that a guard was injured.

We chose not to go for a couple of reasons...
1) We'd been to Dachau and found it very emotional and difficult.
2) While our boys are 9 and would probably get something out of the experience, our 4 year old would have a much more difficult time comprehending what she was seeing.
3) It's impossible to see everything D.C. has to offer, we just had to make compromises.

 

The shooter is being tentatively identified as James Von Brunn, apparently a pretty well known and vocal white supremacist.
