Actually it does matter. A mod is something the manufacture does not offer, so a factory option is not a mod. But if you put a factory option on a vehicle that does not have that option available to it, well then that is a mod.

    Wow. Way to be rediculous.....

I've done more "mods" than I can even remember over the last 18yrs of racing and showing cars/trucks and I still consider this mod appropriate for this forum. If you don't then that is just a semantic problem you'll have to get over. :)

Unfortunately, the illuminated door sill is not a factory option in the U.S. It's a dealer-installed accessory. An accessory can be a "mod" of course you'd have to be pretty loose on that term because mod usually involves the more mechanical bits that improve performance and not dress up the exterior/interior.

well ok... you have an opinion as will several others im sure.

to me a mod is a change to the car after it is received. the door sill is definitely not a standard upgrade part.

now, if you were to take out the stock stereo and put your own in, would that be a mod?

granted, the stereo you put in is not a factory option, but neither is software fixes, updates etc. i would not consider that a mod, because its more of a manufacturer maintenance fix....

a lot of ways to look at this. personally, i consider it a mod just like the EV switch i put on my SPM (something that Toyota does provide, in fact a lot of people bought an EV switch DIRECTLY FROM TOYOTA) which was not available from Toyota.

another thing and for me personally, the biggest thing... i really dont care what the change is... if i have to pay SOMEONE ELSE, namely Toyota to put it in... iow, was not put in at the factory, then i consider it a mod since i installed it and only charged myself personal time

A bit of clarification - it's a PORT or DEALER installed option.

However given that we did buy it after the fact and installed ourselves, I'd consider it a modification as it's no longer "showroom" stock as it was delivered to me. Same would go if we got the Prius 17" rims and installed them on our cars. While "Toyota" available, it didn't come that way.

Lighted Door Sill? Almost totally gratuitous. However it looks so good it might just be one of those looks are worth it additions. Really, it's something I'd normally never consider but after seeing photos...Electrify my Door Sill!

How about some photos of them in the evening or in the dark of night? Just for kicks.

ya, ok, i realize its a probably a $25 part...maybe $40 if you consider the unlit back door pieces, but hey it looks good...

then again, what is the parted out price of other mods that i have installed and their value...umm, well sharkfin was like what?? $75...could got a standard antenna for $10... so its all relative.

all i can say is the look on my SO's face the first time she saw it makes it worth the money

    **edit**

and after the quote from the dealer...$439 installed which was $269 for part ($20 discount if purchased from PC...thanks Danny!!) and then $170 for labor!!...now i know how they make their money!!

The only way these things could have been made cooler is if the rear ones lit as well :D

They're really a great addition to the car...

I haven't seen very many illuminated rear door sills.

Be happy that it says PRIUS with the HSD logo. Other cars have more generic door sills... like the RX or the IS which simply say LEXUS. Ours is more personalized.

Oh no, I wasn't complaining at all, I am quite happy with them actually. I was just saying it would have been even cooler if they did...

Wow a whole thread dedicated to arguing if adding door sills is a modification or not????

I'll take a leap of faith and assume mod can be intrepretated as short for modification. Thus modifications is defined as:

the making of a limited change in something ; also : the result of such a change

The argument as to if the factory offers it or is it a mechanical change, etc,in order to qualify as a "mod" seem pretty anal. Modify means to change. It's a simple concept. Get over it.

The door sills look great regardless what you call it.

Nice and thanks for the pictures. On a scale of 1 to 10 how difficult was the installation, 10 is the most difficult ?

difficulty of install...4... but that all depends on your skill level. if you have done ANYTHING with your hands, i would make that a 2-3...

what you needed to do was post a task and rated it.

for example, an oil change on a regular car. nothing fancy...technically speaking if the oil change was 5 then the install might be a 7 (granted the "tech" aspect of oil changes are lacking)

now if you are looking at the physical and manual dexterity requirements, oil changes being a 5, the lights would be like 3. isolating the wires was a bit of a challenge, but i could have simply cut the ties on the bundle. separated them, tap them, and rebundled them afterward with decent electrical tape. but was not really necessary.

You might think it's funny but the glovebox light doesn't go off in the Gen 2 when the glovebox is closed.
