Hi all, I am interested in buying a Prius II with but do not want to shell out $2,800 more for a backup camera. I have heard that the camera if very useful. Can I get people's inputs of the backup camera and are there any options I can get for just the camera without the navigation package? Thanks.

On the 2010 Prius, the backup camera is only available with package III. Without package three, there is no TV screen for a camera. You should be able to find a Prius with backup camera on a 2009 in your price range. We test drove a Gen II with a backup camera and really like it. We ordered 2010 with the Nav and backup camera. I felt the car will be worth more to the next owner with Nav and backup camera.

Or order the auto-dimming mirror from Gentex and order the one that has backup camera capability.

Her is a link to an aftermarket GPS with blue tooth and wireless backup camera. I have no idea how good it is. You can also get backup cameras without gps for about $100

It will be worth something more depending on how old it is you sell it, but you really need to get your moneys worth out of it yourself for it to really be worth it.
It doesn't make sense financially to spend $1800 to get $450 back in resale.
Some options on cars will pay for themselves in much easier resale (automatic trans and a/c etc.) but factory nav is not one of them.

I do not understand why they did not put back up camera in all the Prius.. I would have the Mirror with the backup camera ..put in .. I use my backup camera. And if I sell a package 2 2010. I highly recommend adding a backup camera...thanks stefcat

I specifically ordered the III to get the backup camera. The nav is a plus because up until now Toyota didn't offer nav in Hawaii. I find the backup camera very helpful when parallel parking and making sure no one is behind me before reversing.

The least expensive option would either be install backup sensors or to install an aftermarket license plate frame mounted camera.

any wireless device will have a delay so not sure i would get that in a backup camera since a delay might be critical... but had someone on Zenn forum install one for VERY cheap. he got his at amazon.com

now he got one with 2½ LCD for $55 and i am glad he has EXCELLENT vision. i am sure larger displays are available at a decent price.

I have the 2010 Prius V w/Adv. Tech package. The backup camera came with the Adv. Tech package. I find that the backup camera is very useful for me backing out of my drive way and when backing up at malls parking lot. I had a backup camera on my 2007 Prius, the backup camera on the 2010 Prius models are a lot better.

Whoa, I didn't know that the 2010 Prius' backup camera was a lot better than the Gen II's. I'll have to check that out sometime.

I'm really pleased with the one I have (and that you had) in the 2007. It's great.

Just like netcams, you'd be surprised by the improvements. My experience with them on computers is much better lighting. On my 2010, it certainly does display well in the dark.

Tideland, does the GIII model's rear-view include HomeLink, compass, and rearview image? If so, are they available to purchase from Toyota Parts catalogue? Does Toyota use the Gentex mirror?

Thanks for this thread. I am poised to buy a Prius II, but have the same hesitancy about the camera. I've heard form a lot of folks that it is a must have. I have never added an aftermarket feature to a car (be nice). Wondering if folks have advice about how to find a local place that really knows the new Prius so I won;t find myself in trouble if I decide to add a camera. I too would welcome advice on specific cameras that work well with the Gen III. Thanks for this forum!

    Homelink only in the US.

Most manufacturers use the Gentex mirrors so the same mirror is found in a Honda as it is in a GMC. Design might differ depending on year (e.g. 06+ Prius have different mirrors than the 04/05. Gentex updated the design)

I thought the same until I had one. Now I realize I have developed a habit if checking the camera before I start to backup and for parallel parking. I feel a little blind without it and I definitely miss it.

I wouldn't have thought of a backup camera as a required feature if... my brother's brother-in-law thought his son was in the house with his mom and backed his car down the driveway, ran over his son, and killed him. Yes, these accidents fortunately few and far between. I'd hate to be in a similar situation. To me, for the extra bucks it costs either integrated or aftermarket, it's now worth it.
