Can't buy me love? Before you can say "Once more, with feeling", there's gotta be a 'once'. And it's not usually the guy that needs dinner and a movie first. For $200 an hour, I'd say skip that part and have dessert first. It's your birthday. Treat yourself. :D

If it's any consolation, us married old farts don't necessarily have it any better. If you add up the costs of the mortgage, the w(h)ining and dining, sending the kids to university, the pain and suffering of taking out the garbage all those years, the endless 'honeydew' lists, sleeping on the couch when the significant other is snoring...and divide it by the number of times you get laid, I bet hookers are waay cheaper. And you don't have to put up with the same one all the time, either. :p

A bad marriage is a lot worse than being single. A good marriage is a lot better. The problem with hookers is you know they're just doing it for the money. I've never made love with a woman who wanted me. But a few times in my life (few enough to count on one hand) I've held hands with a girlfriend, and I can say that holding hands with a woman who likes me is better than having sex with a hooker. I need companionship a lot more than I need a hole to put my thing into.

Not happy the way I am. And sex for pay is the only way I'm going to get sex, but sex for pay just isn't that interesting, when you know that inwardly, the girl is disgusted by you, and won't even let you kiss her on the mouth. That's like saying you can eat ice cream, but you can't let it melt on your tongue, you just have to swallow chunks of it.

Looks like I'll be "celebrating" my birthday by eating lunch alone at the Indian restaurant and then probably pick up some chocolate cookies at the bakery. (I'm not big on cake.)

P.S. I think the $200/hr is the base price for being with the "escort" if you don't want to actually do anything. I think anything you want to do is extra, to be negotiated at the time.

The Russian mail-order bride thing isn't always a scam. A technician I used to work with married a Russian girl through a "mail-order" service. He was in his 40's, not very good looking, with a deformed hand. After 30 years of rejection from American women he tried something different. We all thought he was getting scammed because it took ~18 months and he was constantly having to pay for stuff. ~$30K and 18 months later she was in the US and they were married. Seven years later they are still together.

I also know quite a few Indian couples that have arranged marriages. Their parents make a selection, the meet once or twice, then they are married for life.

It seems Americans expect perfection like you see in some movie.

No, but an "I love you" out of the blue, from a beautiful 20-ish Russian to a dumpy 60-year-old American man is. Anyway, I've seen that movie with Nichole Kidman, in which she is a Russian mail-order bride. Pretty spooky.

I saw that movie. I also saw a British real life show, where a British, older man, dated a russian girl on the internet. He paid for her to go through college. She did go to England to meet him, and had intended to marry him. After 1 week with him she couldn't wait to go home. In the credits at the end of the show they claimed that he was not her only 'boyfriend'. Apparantly she had others who also sent her a lot of money.

a co-worker's brother did a mail order bride kind of thing and it was legit, but cost a fortune and it did not work out. he brought her over for around $20,000. they were together for around 2 years but i guess the relationship never really had a chance from the start.

so even those are not guaranteed either (oh oh!!... was i not supposed to bring that up?)

I really don't care about birthdays, but maybe I'll change in another 20 years or so. My birthday is a State Secret, at least around the office

My pets provide far better companionship than people

I think once robot women are perfected (Clever programming to make one think the machine actually DOES like you, robot parts that won't maim or kill you), the problem of not having a date or wife will disappear

Mail order brides are a crap shoot. It can work, but a blind date can work too. Your odds are probably the same either way, but the blind date is cheaper. There are cultures where arranged marriages are the norm. Those marriages usually last, not because they "work" but because the culture, which both bride and groom believe in, or are trapped in, requires them to stay together. And usually the husband owns the wife and makes all the decisions for both of them. He is permitted to rape her, and to beat her if he feels like it, either because she has disobeyed him, or because he is just angry in general, and she is a convenient way for him to take out his anger. There are times I think it would be nice to be able to buy a wife, but really, I know I would be no happier with an unwilling purchased wife than with a willing paid hooker. At least the hooker pretends to enjoy it.

    *******

I am 61 years old today, and 161 pounds, which is 31 pounds over my ideal weight, and 26 pounds over my acceptable weight. I am "hungry" for physical contact, and so I keep overeating. This is stupid. I have contempt for myself for it. I cannot have love, because women do not like me, but I could be the weight I want if I merely had the strength of character to go on a diet.

And just to make sure that the day is thoroughly miserable, I feel like I may be starting to come down with a sore throat, and the forecast is for rain. It does not make it any better to know that 95% of the world's population has it one whole hell of a lot worse, that there are millions of children in Africa with no food, or that the Taliban, with Arab aid, and the Pakistani army, with American aid, are competing with each other to see which side can kill the most innocent civilians.

I used to have nightmares about nuclear war. Now I think it would be a blessing.

Normally I would apologize for a post as downer as this. But, hey, it's my birthday, so I have an excuse.

I've considered getting one of those inflatable women. That I've even thought about it is pretty pathetic.

    Daniel,

Have you ever studied biology/ecology much? I mean enough to understand how incredible even the tiniest organism is? Have you looked into and learned about the many wonderful adaptations plants use to survive, grow, and reproduce, many of which use other organisms for some of these processes? There is so much wonder in the world that I cannot be down, or feel bad a bout my lot in life. This has really helped transform my view of the world and my place in it. Depression has no hold on me nor will it ever. Even in death I feel I will be doing good for a variety of organisms and systems so I can remain happy. :)

I know you love animals and you love to learn. Have you ever thought about working with habitat restoration specialists? I'm seriously considering starting a breeding program for some of the endangered or threatened species in my local area to aid in reintroductions into newly created habitat or in restored habitat. Many species populations are down due to over-development and not typical "Darwinian struggles" and there are MANY habitat restoration projects that mitigate for such development but often times it is difficult to introduce locally extirpated species into this new habitat because you cannot simple go to a store and purchase some. I thinking of starting a breeding program for certain vernal pool crustaceans and amphibians to aid in such restoration work. Many people around the world do this and they appear go gain great satisfaction from it just as I do growing all my little oaks that we use in restoration work. Maybe it is something you would find useful to the world and would keep you busy enough to not even care about women?

I'm likely way off base but seeing many of my older friends, that are without wives, lead happy lives that are filled with conservation work leads me to believe this works for some people.

Huh. That always works for me.

I guess every human goes through a certain amount of melancholy. It's not healthy to dwell on it
