Anybody want a red 2010 Prius II, it only cost $28,500 plus tax!!!!!

    Yesterday I drove by a local dealer and saw a red 2010 Prius II on the lot and stopped to take a look. I almost fell over when I saw the price was a over $28k with the $4500 market value adjustment added and some other minor accessories. Another dealer 9 miles away wanted $3000 m.v.a. for a prius III and it was sold. Even the salesman agreed it was crazy and could do nothing about it. He said he could have sold the three Prius' they have at least five times for sticker but manager would not budge. Two customers went next door and bought a Honda Insight which are now being slightly discounted. The salesman actually told me that Toyota told the dealers that they should charge $3000 m.v.a. for the Prius throughout the summer. Is there any truth to this?

    I doubt it, plenty of us are purchasing at MSRP or even a little below. The common response (not just of salespeople) when they don't know the why behind something is to just make something up. Sounds like that's what happened here.

    I gave the salespeople my number and told them to call me when they get serious about selling cars and got rid of the MVA nonsense. One guy had the balls to ask for a deposit so I would be the first one they call when prices came down. Yes please could you hold my money ransom until you decide to sell cars for the asking price. :rolleyes:

    Yes this is going on all over. I was told the same thing last week only it was $5000 over the sticker price. I laughted at them and said good luck with that.

    I then went 20 miles south of here and bought one (ordered) at sticker price. The only extra was the doc fee's. They will have some that will buy at the mark up, don't know why, but they will.

    They probably think the current upward trend in gas prices will continue into the summer and provide incentive to those people in the market for a new car. The 50MPG estimate on the EPA sticker will look better and better as the gas price nation-wide escalates.

    It might, but there are not *that many* people in the market for new cars in the U.S..
    Some people may not know this, but car sales have plummeted over the last year and they are not on a big upswing yet. They should feel lucky they can find people who will even pay as much as full MSRP sticker for even the first several weeks after the release of a newly redesigned car.

    Gas prices are going up up up!! Fortunately my wife put her deposit down about 2-3 weeks ago. We got her Prius II about a week ago at MSRP ($22,000 + 750 Destination + 200 floor mats). Northern Virginia dealership.

    I just stopped at Toyota of Hayward (CA) yesterday with my father-in-law to see the new Prius. I was excited to see it in person and sit in it; I do love the new interior design.

    Then I saw it was a package II with $4,995 tacked on for leather interior. Now as some of you may recall, back when my '05 was new I had full leather installed with perforated centers on the seats. The total cost installed was about $1,300 if I recall correctly. The leather in the II looked identical to mine. So Toyota of Hayward is trying to hide their "additional over charge" in the form of leather interior; what a shame.

    I am probably going to buy a new Prius 5 at some point, but not while the feeding frenzy exists that is for sure.

    I live in hayward, and i have been told by their manager to go home when I refused the crazy expensive leather package for a highlander a while back. go to toyota sunnyvale they have plenty of prius II with $150 off. I bought one last weekend about $25665 out the door within a few hours. PM me if you need help.

    They are selling right at MSRP here in the Indianapolis area. They started out a little bit too excited marking up above sticker but quickly readjusted down to MSRP once they realized it wouldn’t fly around here. I looked for the best deals in all dealers here (5 of them) and while none accepted a price bellow MSRP, I put them in a war for the best cash for my trade-in and it worked!

    No mark-ups on the 2010 here in Northwest Indiana--but no deals, either. We paid sticker price, which is the first time in over 40 years of buying cars that I have done that. But, I guess the car is worth it?
    We kept the cost down by shopping around for a Package III with no extras. Paid just under 26K, (this was approximately what I paid for my first house, which I had built in 1972) including tax, which they claim we can get back on our Federal Income tax return?
    This is our first brand new car in well over 10 years, and may very well be our last. We hope it stands up well to the test of time.

    I've been to a number of Toyota dealers here in northern California. Some are selling at MSRP; others are adding extra features that you don't want, didn't ask for, and don't need; yet others are adding that silly "market adjustment" on top of all the junk.

    Like anything else, it pays to shop around..............

    You get a deduction for the sales tax, not a credit. So, if you have a tax liability, your tax is reduced by x% of the sales tax, with x = your marginal tax bracket. Same will apply in many states that start with federal income also.

    Caycarem- Thanks for the offer; I appreciate it. This is not my first time to the show, I have bought over 30 new cars and never paid what the dealer asks or expects yet.

    The fact that some of these dealerships are so blatantly trying to rip off consumers is just what I have come to expect from a lot of these sales people. But, if it were not for ignorant buyers, they would not be able to do it. Too many people don't care what they are really paying in total, just what their monthly payment will be. I call those people foolish becasue they are in debt their whole lives-generally.

    When I buy a new Prius or maybe an Insight (have not visited Honda yet to actually see and drive one) I definitely will not be paying an inflated price with a bunch of add-ons I did not request and do not want. And I guarantee I will get exactly the Prius I want.

    Your best defense against greedy sales people is information. Educate yourself before you walk into the lion's den. These people have no shame- the ignorant, greedy salesman at Toyota of Hayward actually tried to tell me, "We are not making a penny on the leather; we do it to make our customers happy since a lot of our "wealthier" customers expect leather". I just walked away from him after that bold-faced lie.

    It is almost as if these idiots go to some kind of idiot sales training/technique school to learn how to lie to people with a straight face.

    Oh, one of the best parts of my trip to Toyota of Hayward....as I was looking at the red Prius in their showroom, standing at the open hatch looking into the back, there is a salesman sitting at a desk right next to the driver's side rear of the car, about 6 feet away. He is eating a sandwich at his desk and lets out an incredibly loud burp as my father-in-law and I are standing right there. Does this ill-mannered pig even bother to say "excuse me"? Nope- he just keeps stuffing food into his mouth. Yeah, that's the guy I would buy a car from.

    Anyway, all in all, the car is what I was hoping to see and I did. :)The salespeople were exacltly what I expected after years of seeing these people and I was not disappointed there either. :eek:

    I paid MSRP here in Midcoast Maine plus afte rmarket leather and XM radio. $27k
    out the door including tax deductible sales tax, shipping, etc. The XM module add-on
    was $600, which I was told was mostly labor to install it. Of the 3 dealers I checked
    in Maine, none were adding extra dealer profit, but some vehicles did have extras few
    would want to pay for.

    Why pay MSRP? Never!

    Research, annoy dealerships until they succum to your wishes! Bought a 2010 Package III with Nav in Sandy Beach for $1250 under MSRP! With floor mats, and bumper applique......the MSRP was $25800.........you do the math. BTW, placed order May 16th and I was supposed to receive the vehicle mid June but took ownership May 29th...........so far so good.

    Remember, this economy is still difficult for dealerships to unload vehicles............don't buy into the hype, it's still a buyers market 2010 Prius or not!

    One last thing, thank GOD for Oregon's $1500 tax credit from the Oregon Department of Energy.............. final purchase price comes closer to $23,000..........not too shabby. <shrugs>

    I have noticed that "MSRP" is different from place to place. We just got a 2010, and the "sticker" price, which they said was MSRP, was 23,500. Elsewhere I see that the MSRP is closer to 22,000. What's the difference, and how do they justify that?

    Federal tax credits were phased out December 2007 for the Toyota Prius, thus you have received incorrect information. Check your state tax incentives...........

    Washington State waives sales tax, thus one reason why I had a hard time trying to find a 2009 Package 5 in both Oregon and Washington. Oregon hands out a $1500 tax credit assuming tax liability is greater than forementioned sum.

    With all things considered, I ordered and bought a 2010 Package III with Nav for a $700 less than a 2009 Package 5. Both are similarly equiped..........I might add, pricing is based on taking the 0% financing on the 2009 rather than the $1000 rebate.

    There are bargins to be found people..........just be patient and stick to your guns!
