Unfortunately for the state of South Carolina, he was not the victim of foul play. As probably the most hated person in South Carolina, though, I wouldn't be shocked if it happened in the future.

GOP, please nominate this bastard as your 2012 Presidential candidate so I can watch him go down in flames.

Sanford, missing since Thursday, reportedly located - Local / Metro - The State

Sanford, missing since Thursday, reportedly located

By John O'Connor and Clif LeBlanc The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford was unknown for nearly four days, and some state leaders question who was in charge of the executive office.

But Sanford’s office told the lieutenant governor’s office Monday afternoon that Sanford has been reached and he is fine, said Frank Adams, head of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s office on aging.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said.

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.

The governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off and he had not responded to phone or text messages since at least the weekend, a source familiar with the situation said.

Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

One official familiar with the situation said there was no indication that foul play might have been involved because Sanford occasionally makes trips without his security detail.

Knotts, a longtime Sanford critic, said he contacted SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd Saturday after he heard reports the governor could not be reached.

"Chief Lloyd confirmed that my information is legitimate," Knotts said. "He shared my concerns" about succession of power in Sanford’s absence, the Lexington Republican said. Lloyd could not be reached immediately on Monday.

"I was recently made aware that Governor Sanford has frequently been eluding SLED agents and disappearing at odd times," Knotts said. Previously, Sanford has not been out of all contact - including with his own office - for this long before, a source, who insisted on anonymity, said.

Knotts said the state’s chief executive should never be unreachable.

"As the head of our state, in the unfortunate event of a state of emergency or homeland security situation, Governor Sanford should be available at all times to the Chief of SLED," the senator said.

"If for any reason, including the unknown whereabouts of the Governor, he is unable to perform the duties of his office the Constitution provides that the lieutenant governor assumes the position of governor.

"I want to know immediately who is running the executive branch in the governor’s absence," Knotts said.

The question of succession came just after Sanford became governor in 2003.

He joined the Air Force Reserve and was sent to Alabama for two week’s training with his unit, the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron based in Charleston. Sanford did not transfer power to Bauer at the time, saying he would be in regular contact with his office.
Sanford said then he would transfer authority in writing to the lieutenant governor only if he were called to active duty.

Would anybody had seriously cared if he disappeared off the face of the earth?

Nope, just in the front yard of the capitol building now. We are soooo progressive here!

Actually, I don't really mind the Confederate flag on the Statehouse grounds. All of the "establishments" that chose to make it such a big deal are the reasons the legislature dug their heels in on it. None of my black friends have a problem with it.

Another case of the NAACP doing more harm than good for their constituents.

Y'all sure your Governor wasn't originally from Texas... :D :D

Oh wait... he wasn't trying to avoid a vote... he's just taking a "time-out"...

    Coooooollll... You go dude...

Jeeeeezzzzz... y'all are acting like he has to be at his job where you say his job is all the time or something... this IS the information age... I'm sure he has a Blackberry/something else to stay in touch if he needs to.

I mean... if he knows how to turn em on when he should, right... and his ol-lady knew he was going to do it and hasn't got a problem...

Hmmmm... makes ya wonder if he has a "side-life" like Hans Blix...

    I'm just saying...

actually, since you're now living over the northern border of sc, your governor is running around this state, trying to rally support for a tax hike. because the sales taxes, property taxes, car taxes, and state and local income taxes are so cheap here, and employment is so plentiful, that we can all totally afford it.

I used to live in Columbia and walk thru the USC campus and state capitol grounds at lunch after what really was some of the best fried chicken you could find. The confederate flag was flying and the bullet holes from The War of Norther Aggression hadn't been repaired as a reminder.

Does this thread's presence in this open-to-everyone Fred's House of Pancakes forum mean that we're now free to post about politics here, instead of being limited to the closed, registered-members-only Fred's House of Politics forum?

    I hope so.

No it doesn't. Danny should be sent on a vacation for an 'infraction'.

Where's Fusco when you need him?

As it says in the book of ecclesiastes ... there's nothing new under the sun. One only need look back a few decades ... with the kennedy chappaquiddick debacle. And I think there's some similar creep(s) running around in Italy right now as well:

This is his first violation. I think a warning would be sufficient. And move the thread to Politics.

I think we should go back to allowing politics on the general Fred's House of Pancakes forum.

IMO, the limiting of political discussion to the ghetto that is Fred's House of Politics, is the biggest reason for that forum's often insular, autoerotic, and nasty nature. The political discussion was better in the old days when it was allowed in the general forum.

FHoPol... it's all good, really, it is...

While I am a fan of being able to speak your mind in most places, I think the creation of a separate board to house the political speculative finger-pointing crowd (myself included) is indeed needed to keep others, who are not wanting to be a party to the discussion of politics on a car forum, some ability to shade themselves from the aftermath of a thread going nuclear over righty-this/lefty-that and blowing some folks into a vacation...

As for Danny... it is his forum right... well then... he can damn well post em where he chooses... and we should not be pointing fingers at him for an infraction of a general rule... that he made...

Hmmm... I'm really not helping him here am I... :D

Let's be honest. You want to keep the carzy people over there. They're a lot like zombies. If you don't make a lot of noise and attract their attention they'll just wander aimlessly in that other place eating each others brains and leave FredsCatHouse alone.

If the post is properly titled why not politics here?
Supposedly the Prius is considered by many (rightly or wrongly) to be a "political statement" in itself?

Fred's is the place i go first the longer i'm here to enjoy everyone..and politics is something I enjoy....
I second the motion for legal politics here..

    regards
    Froley

Oh by the way, being gone for 4 days is 4 days less damage he can do-
this was my original intent for the post.
