Talk Switch and Handsfree Phone Use

    We have had our 2010 IV since last Friday. My wife attempted to use the talk switch to initiate handsfree phone use and the system did not respond.

    The only way that I could duplicate the condition was to have the radio playing, but the naviagation screen off. In this scenario the talk switch would not initiate a handsfree phone call. I have gone through the Navigation System Owner's Manual and can find no indication that without the navigation screen being active, the talk switch will not work.

    Does the audio or navigation screen indeed have to be on, for the talk switch to work to initiate a handsfree phone call? Since the talk switch seemed to work consistently when the screen was on, I'm inclined to think this is the case, however, I want to be sure that there isn't a system issue that we should look into.

    I'm not certain I understand what is happening here. Are you saying the bluetooth connection has been made linking your cell phone to the car, but the buttons on the steering wheel work only occasionally and that sometimes you are unable to make a call using those buttons?

    I can say I've experienced some lag w/ the steering wheel controls and the NAV unit in several functions. I can easily outpace volume controls, and more often than not I've had to press the phone buttons more than once to get the desired action (i.e. answer a call).

    The same thing happened to me tonight. I have a 2010 IV, with solar roof, anyway I had the screen off, radio on, and I pushed the voice button to show my wife how it worked. Nothing happened. I pushed the voice button again, but two times real fast. The voice prompt did not come on. I didn't read your post until late tonight. To get it to work I can't remember if I turn the screen back on (pretty sure I did), then I hit the voice button and the voice prompt did come on. Anyone else experiencing this, what am I doing wrong?

    having the screen off seems to be the common denominator here. when using the hands free, the screen always displays the options available. wondering if the screen must be on to work?

    i think the screen must be on. i would guess its because while driving toyota wants to limit the distractions and has decided that you must see the screen and not operate voice only.

    I agree they want to limit distractions but this seems like the opposite of what Toyota would want. It would force you to take your eyes off the road to activate the handsfree... I think it must be a design defect.

    I will try this again tonight, but I am almost positive that this worked for mine. I have a Prius V Navi, and the the following I know is true:

    If I am driving with navi on, and simply hit the 'Answer" button, the Navi screen will display the "Speed Dial' / "History" screen, and if I push the answer button again, it will go to "History", a third click will select the last call, and a fourth click will dial last number, and initiate call.

    The other night, when the screen was off, I was able to press the answer button 4 times, (allowing time for reaction between each press), and the volume went down, and the call connected. I think that this is the expected behavior whether the screen is on or off.

    Unless someone else confirms sooner, I will try this again on my way home and post tonight.

    you don't have to actually touch the screen so its still handsfree, but there are cues on the screen, and in practice you DON'T have to touch it. I am not defending it.

    They say you learn something every day--and today I learned this. :)

    I find voice dialing involves too many voice command steps & button presses, so lately I've been pressing the INFO-PHONE button, then pressing phone on the screen, then speed dials. With your method, it's much easier/quicker/safer. Thanx.

    ok just back from my misc. errands. and the OP is correct. if the screen is off, voice commands do not work.

    but an easy workaround is to hit the phone button which turns the screen on to display the dial pad (which is weird because its non functional when moving) then voice commands will work
