I've looked all over PriusChat and the web for an answer to this:

Are there any technical barriers to installing the OEM NAV headunit to a non-NAV equipped Prius?

I tried to find this information on the Toyota Technical Information System website, but I don't have a US address, which is needed to register :(. If anyone has accessed this site I hope to know if it's possible and what parts (eg: harnesses, hardware) are required. If I can track these parts down (perhaps from someone who is putting in an aftermarket sound system), it would be a nice weekend project.

I really like the the look and function of the OEM NAV but couldn't justify the Tech Package here in Canada (the only package where you can get NAV in Canada). I have the Premium Package which includes JBL. I read from elsewhere on the web that it's easy to swap the headunits on JBL equipped Toyotas because the amplifier is external and the same amp is used for NAV and non-NAV equipped cars. So the only difference is the headunit itself.

Anyone considered this and have information they can share?

I have done this on a BMW, I used salvage parts and it cost close to $2,000 and took me 2 days.

I would think that the parts alone could cost $4k+

Ouch! I was willing to spend $2K on a built in NAV. After seeing that available as a separate package in the US, I started to get excited. Until the packages were released in Canada and I had to spend another $5K for the technology package (over the premium+solar which I eventually ordered) which was too expensive .

The solar roof package in Canada does not include NAV, btw.

You're better off buying a portable device as the cost is SO much cheaper. You can also look to the aftermarket and change out the radio for a unit that has a built in NAV. Those are pricey too but LESS than what the parts from Toyota will cost you. Good Luck and keep us posted.

This might be of help... This link takes you to a site with the Nav package for under $500. Our 2010 Prius III with the Nav package will be arriving in early July. I've been looking for the same package I can install in our Sprinter based RV... Steve:thumb:

OK... I can't post the link until I've made 5 postings... but if you go to lightinthebox dot com and do a search on 'Camry' you will see the Nav package.

$2k is what it would cost you to get one as a factory option.
$3,120 is what would cost you (plus tax) if you got one from the dealer as an accessory (based on the full navigation system offered in the Camry and Venza. They're more expensive than the 'lite' versions available for the Matrix and Corolla and Yaris).

You'll have to wait and see if Toyota will offer it on the Prius as an accessory but expect close to that price.

You mean it's possible to get it installed at the factory for $2K? I asked two dealers about that but both said it's not available. They didn't mention if it's a factory option or an accessory though.

I've seen the ones on Corolla and Matrix and they don't look very integrated. If I had any of these cars I would install an aftermarket NAV myself. The NAV on the Prius integrates with the rest of the car very well so I prefer to have it over an aftermarket one.

Thanks everyone for your insights. I do have a Garmin GPS which I use with my current car, so I'll have to use it with my Prius when it arrives. I'm lazy and would love the convenience not having to mount the Garmin everytime.:) (I take everything off, including the suction cup, to deter thieves)

I tried to find this information on the Toyota Technical Information System website, but I don't have a US address, which is needed to register :(. As for aftermarket headunits, I will consider it as well. However, I really love the integration with the dash and the rest of the car, so installing the OEM NAV is on top of my list.

Oh I meant if you were to order it with the car (e.g. get the Tech Pack), it's ~ $2,000 (It's a $1,660 option for the Camry without a backup camera)

I noticed that my dealer is offering the NAV for Camry as an accessory for $1,585.00. Not sure if it's the same NAV as the one installed at the factory. If you look at the pictures on Toyota's website, the NAV is very nicely integrated (like the one on the Prius) :).

Hi... I want to post a link for the group about this subject. I don't understand "You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 5 posts or more. If you have a link to a news item or tip that you would like to share, please use the Contact link at the bottom right of this page." Where is the Contact link... I don't see it. Thanks! :(

I guess you can send links to people directly (ie: without posting on the forum) by clicking on their names. I didn't try to post any links until I had more than 5 posts.

    Green Curry,

What about swapping units with someone in the U.S. who got the Nav in order to get the sunroof. I'm sure you know by now that in the U.S. you can't get the sunroof without Nav.

I have a Prius IV on order without Nav or sunroof. If I could get the sunroof alone I would. Let's say, just for discussion sake at this point, that you agreed to pay me $1800 (U.S.) to agree to buy my Prius with nav/roof and then trade head units. That way I would be paying $1800 for the sunroof rather than the $3600 required now.

Of course, I have no idea weather this is possible, risky, etc. That would have to be researched. You would also have to install the nav antenna.

    What do you think?

That would be a good and economical idea. And if any special parts/harnesses are needed (eg: the GPS antenna), they can be swapped as well.

The only concern is exactly which parts are needed, and how to disassemble the dash. I have a feeling it's very simple if both cars are JBL equipped.

lightinthebox dot com Do a search on 'Camry' and you will see the Nav unit for around $500. NAVTEQ (you can Google them) makes the GPS software & maps for these unit and the 2010 uses this software too. I wanted to get the same Nav for our RV and ordered one from lightinthebox. I can put the NAVTEQ software in the RV unit using the SD card feature. Hey- 2 more tries at this and I can post the actual LINK!!

I did see those for Camry and Corolla, looks really nice. The only thing I'm concerned is if the quality is good (it's not made by Toyota or any well known aftermarket car audio company). Also, if I get the original NAV headunit from Toyota the steering wheel controls (for audio and bluetooth) and the aux input port inside the center console would still work.

It looks like the swap of the physical units would be easy. In one of the threads in the general 2010 forum, someone describes installing the ipod controller which requires pulling the head unit and plugging it controller cable in to the back of the unit.

All they did was carefully pull off the plastic surround from around the head unit, then undo 4 bolts and pull it out. I assume that both units would slide into the same mount.

The bigger question is where the GPS antenna is located and how hard that is to remove and reinstall. I looked at a Prius V with nav and didn't see an obvious gps antenna on the roof or windshield.
