patrick, it really depends what the adjuster/inspector wrote on the claims form. if it called for new parts, that's what it should be. maybe ask the inspector if it called for new or used. i'm not too concerned for anything else BESIDES the electrical things. door lock, window, side window adjustments. if those go down, will they honor the repair?

glad to hear things are getting better.

    Hi Gene,

The repair quote did specify a used LF door. I edited my post #19 with an itemization of the $2,800 repair quote if anyone is interested.

I would expect that if any of the door's electrical components fail soon after the accident repair, that this would be covered under insurance.

Hi Patrick - I'm sorry to hear about your wife's accident. I am hoping that whatever injuries they received are minor and that they will be doing just fine in short order! The car can be fixed and looks to have held up well considering. Obviously things could have been terribly worse. Good luck with everything.

    Best Regards,
    Steve

i would question using used parts as well. on my SPM, a person hit and scraped the back bumper. well their insurance replaced it but the body shop used reconditioned part.

now it looked fine when we picked it up but after a few weeks, the color is now different than the rest of the car and its plainly obvious that its a different part. now, despite the fact that they were very accommodating when the insurance company was paying us a per diem (we waived the rental car for cash) and fast. (only took two days) and the fact that they have a 100% satisfaction lifetime , etc., etc., guarantee...they are now dragging their feet on how they are going to fix it.

now as parts get older and sun damage comes into play, not sure that perfect matching is even available...soooo...just thought you should know

    Patrick,

Hope the medical issues get sorted out. My son was hit on his bicycle last year, and we're only now realizing the extent of his injuries, and it looks like some may be life-long. Wish we'd insisted on more evaluations early-on.

Sounds like no welding on the car--is that correct? So, no battery removal/replacement tasks? Our repair bill was so much higher on our sideswipe damage, and I think a lot had to do with the ancillary jobs, like on the battery. Our insurance company said we didn't have a choice on used parts--they were going to use them when it made sense to do so. There just wasn't going to be any arguing about it without a clear rationale to do otherwise, I believe. I'm very happy with our insurance company though--been with them for a really long time.

Our kids' college expenses are only beginning this year... mine just ended. Sigh.

Yes. With 81K miles the car is not in pristine cosmetic condition. The front bumper has road rash, etc. As long as the color match is reasonable and the newly painted panels are color sanded so that the amount of orange peel texture matches the rest of the car, I will be happy.

Yes, the new LR door shell will be welded to the rest of the door, but that would be done off the vehicle.

Perhaps you were asking this question of Dave? I have State Farm and the other driver has Farmers Insurance.

I guess "lifetime guarantee" is fairly common. I'll see if it really is true for Nationwide since I plan to keep it nearly a lifetime. Body work done on my Prius was great but some of my parts (auto parts that is) were "recycled" as well.

Final update: The Prius is repaired and looks great. Body door panel gaps are even, the Tideland Pearl paint color matches very nicely. The pearl content is even throughout the painted area. The newly painted area was colorsanded and is nice and smooth, no flaws in the paint.

At freeway speeds the car seems quieter than before, although the rubber door seals had not been replaced with new.

The final bill was $3,700 because the driver's Smart door handle had to be replaced, which added around $400 for parts and labor. Also the B pillar suffered some damage and had to be straightened out. It looks like the driver's door installed is new, not salvage - based upon the invoice.
