I ordered a red SR IV in late june and was told 15 - 20 days (that's one reason why I selected that dealer). Yesterday he told me it would now be Sept - Oct. I'm wondering if waiting for red might be making this harder. Should I think about taking another color or will I hate settling for a 30,000 car? Hmmmm. What do you think? What is your experience?

    thanks.

Personally, I had the same thought... Then I reminded myself that if I'm paying $30k~ for anything, I'm going to get what I want.

you do know that your dealer probably lied to you, right? either that or he screwed you?

cause in late June if he said 20 days, he either 1) had an allotment and knew what was coming so in essence "had" the IV SR red and sold it to you but then delivered it to someone else, or 2) he had no allotment and HOPED he got lucky and a IV solar red came in. he should have known his chances of getting a IV solar red in this region at this time were slim.

there is a small chance he operated in good faith and something happened TO him, but i doubt it.

If red is what you want and you're paying full price, don't settle. How about trying another dealer out of your area?

A lot of regions are not ordering these pricier models in a large mix of the red. The more popular colors are the gray, blizzard white, black, and silver.. and the blue. Historically, the greens, reds and golds did not sell as well in the Gen II. The only thing each region had to go on for their initial Gen III color ratios when they ordered was how well the predecessors did. I know my own region gets WAY more an even ratio of each color, but not all of the areas of the country took the "let's start from scratch and not look at history as a 100% ordering basis" stance.

Of course, based on my own deposits and orders and seeing what folks are waiting for, I know what's popular for "me" but not for perhaps South Florida! :)

:rockon:Never settle when it comes to spending your hard earned money, I sent an E-mail today pointing out my experience so far to date and I informed them that I would not settle for whatever the dealership had coming in.

The salesman and another individual the other day said there wasn't a difference between the Prius IV and Prius III, wow that is so wrong. I guess they were trying to take the easy way out to avoid filling my order, a Prius IV Silver with the solar moonroof. F.Y.I - They have (3) Prius III Gray coming in this month.

I have now decide to go with the Prius V with the ADV TECH package, NEVER SETTLE or Down Grade!!!:peace:Stand your ground.:thumb:

The main difference between the III and the IV is cloth vs. leather upholstery. The reason I preferred the III is that I prefer cloth and therefore didn't want to pay more for leather--it meant I couldn't have the auto-dimming rearview mirror, but that wasn't very important to me. But primarily it's the upholstery that differentiates the two.

    Dianne,
Are you saying that the reason our region isn't getting any solar roofs is because they haven't ORDERED any? They thought that nobody would want them?

How long in advance does the regional distributor have to place the order? How much control do the dealerships have over what's ordered? Do you think the region is finally getting the message that yes, people do want solar and, yes, it's hot enough here to justify it?

I'm in a similar situation; I have a Blue IV on order. I wanted heated leather seats and auto dimming mirror. I would hate to wait until September/October when the dealer told me mid- to late-July. But, I'm with the majority: don't settle for a series you don't want nor a color you don't want. Good luck.

There is a combination of factors involved here. The dealers at the local level have very little control over what is 'ordered' to Toyota Japan. We can 'preference' but that's about it. The regional offices actually place the orders several months in advance of the arrivals.

I also think that the phenomenal demand in the JDM probably has a limiting effect on what is available to us here in the NA market. A 2-4 month leadtime on Prius' with the SR package for 'normal' to small-sized dealers sounds about right. Larger stores will have more but not a lot more.

    I agree with what's below.
Example, if the demand for III's with sunroof is 3x what the amount of cars being brought in as III's with suroofs was, we'd have a problem. Orders we can't fill thru regular allocation. That is perhaps where one may have the ability, or good old fashioned gumption as my dad used to say, to see the limitations as a 3-D brick wall and get around 'em. Meaning, trading between dealerships, special order cars, and beat every single bush out there to get the car you need for your client to get into your inventory. I won't get into detail. I have my secrets to getting cars I need too. But, if you're complacent, you get what you try for. nothing! :(
    I ain't complacent!!!!!!!

That said, each dealership has a road to travel: sell what we're getting as fast as possible, whatever it is and to whoever is willing to buy what we have coming? Or, try and trade what we have to fill orders in order of deposit? Or, a little of both.

Perhaps that could be the case.
What also can be the case is that there's a limit to how many cars that weigh over a certain amount can be brought into each region, by ratio. If you spread sunroof cars thin between III and IV models, you naturally have less sunroof cars to pick from if you need a IV and aren't open to a III. Capische? That EPA regulation also involves V package cars ... if there can ONLY be a certain percentage cars with a certain weight, and it's involved with both sunroof cars and V package cars with their weight and 17" wheels... then by ratio, everything else is a tad more plentiful. The pie is the same size, but the EPA limits how it's sliced up and Toyota can only guess at the slice sizes inside that chunk of cars that CAN have a SR or that CAN be a V package.

Well, we can't even order a III with SR in this area because the option isn't available.

Please explain more about the EPA limits. When you say weight, is that related to the mileage? Or does EPA limit weights for other reasons?

Yes. It's related to the car's weight and the EPA's estimated mileage.
