Gen III Fix for Reverse Beeps?

    Does anyone have access to the 2010 Prius repair manual that would have the proceedure for turning off Reverse Beeps.

    I think you have to take it in to the dealer/service dept.

    The sounds of the reverse beeps are not nearly as objectionable as the screaming sounds of the pedestrian that you just backed over.

    Seriously though, over the past several years there have been many discussion threads here (and in the news media) on the reverse beeps safety issue. If you asked your local dealer to disable the beeps, they might not do it because of the legal liability issues.

    The reverse beep is a customizable feature that can be switched from constant beeping to a single beep. The owners manual lists which features can be modified. You will have to take it to the dealer as they use their Tech Stream tool to make the changes.

    The beeping is inside the car, not outside for pedestrians to hear. You probably couldn't hear them over the beeping anyway :D

    I thought this has been covered before, there are other threads on how people have been able to disable it.

    On the Pre 2010 the owner could make the changes, the 2010 can only be changed at a dealership.

    Suggestion for Toyota:

    I would like to see all the Customizable Features done by dealers on their hand-held computers transferred to the cars computer so we can make those adjustments. Programming a key fob should not be Rocket Science. Restricting the Backup Beep should be something we can do. Dealers are to busy to mess around with such easy settings. My salesman said his service department couldn't do it because they don't have the right equipment yet. I should not have to take my car to the dealer to do something that should be made simple enough for owners to do.

    My other suggestion is to expand the information on the video to show the entire Do it Yourself Maintenance items that can be done by owners listed on pages 408 to 476.

    This was done by my dealer in about 5 minutes - from constant beeping to one beep; it took this long because tech kept asking what other features I wanted to be changed - so no big deal here.[​IMG]

    The equipment changed from a hand-held tester to a notebook computer in 2007 - the last updates for the hand-held were in April 2007. The $8000 ruggedised laptop comes with a two-year subscription for the TIS site (worth $800), which enables new calibrations to be downloaded. This is for all Toyotas, Lexus and Scions, not just Prius.

    Outfitting a workshop with one per station will get expensive, of course. However, I would expect a main dealer to have upgraded the equipment some time in the last two years!

    In case you think that's expensive, by the way, the price of mass-market rugged handheld computers is pretty steep. Were I designing it, I might have started from the Motorola MC9090-K, the cheapest of which is $1,754.10 here. A cradle costs another $260 (there are four-slot charge-only and Ethernet cradles available but I can't see prices). They're fairly rugged but still do get damaged.

    My dealer told me this could not be changed by them because of safety issues and that i should look up how to change it on the internet.

    Tell him if you look for anything on the internet it will be a competent dealer.

    Your dealer is confusing the Gen 2 with the Gen 3 (2010) . The 2010 can only be changed by the dealership. The items that can be customized are listed in the owners manual. Their "safety issue" response is because they don't know about the 2010 features. Try contacting your salesman or the customer relations person. Hope this helps.

    Show them the pages of your owner's manual that tell you what only the dealer can adjust.

    I found incidentially a Youtube video where it is explained how to activate an internal setup, IF you have a NAVI.

    I don´t know if it is possible to change the setup of the beep there, but as far as i´ve seen there is the menu entry "Vehicle Signal". Maybe there is a change possible.

    ROFL! The beeps are quite loud. I had a friend in my car for the first time, and she nearly jumped out of her skin when the beeping started. She said, "What the $@#% is wrong with your car that it is screaming at you?" I've had my 3G Prius for almost two weeks now, and I already have tuned the beeps out...

    That'd be my Bluetooth volume adjustment video. There are no other settings surrounding seatbelt beeps in this menu.

    So are there any other trick/tips? I have tried this several times since seeing it and I cannot get it to work :confused:. I have tried with the car on (ready) and also just in accessory mode...

    The procedure requires the Toyota computer (laptop w/ special USB to CAN interface and software I believe) to make the requisite changes. Toyota doesn't document any other way as it's assumed that the service dept reading the manuals has said computer.

    I just talked to the dealer. They want to charge me close to $60 to change the beep from multiples to a single.

    Is this crazy or what??
