    Quote:
LOS ANGELES – Scientists have detected a spike in underground rumblings on a section of California's San Andreas Fault that produced a magnitude-7.8 earthquake in 1857.

What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, monitored seismic activity on the fault's central section between July 2001 and February 2009 and recorded more than 2,000 tremors. The tremors lasted mere minutes to nearly half an hour.

Unlike earthquakes, tremors occur deeper below the surface and the shaking lasts longer.

During the study period, two strong earthquakes hit — a magnitude-6.5 in 2003 and a magnitude-6.0 a year later. Scientists noticed the frequency of the tremors doubled after the 2003 quake and jumped six-fold after 2004.

Tremor episodes persist today. Though the frequency of tremors have declined since 2004, scientists are still concerned because they are still at a level that is twice as high as before the 2003 quake.

The team also recorded unusually strong rumblings days before the 2004 temblor.

That's cause you live in Sacramento. We will have beachfront property when the other part of California falls into the Pacific.

I'm sure many non californians would experience schadenfraude if the big one were to hit California. Some would proclaim we deserve it cause it were god's will. Most wouldn't admit it of course.

I experienced the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. I was living in Newark, CA and I was standing next to my friends truck in the garage. The truck started bouncing up and down and it was sitting on 4 jack stands at the time. We decided to watch from the driveway. I could see the garage door opening racking back and forth, but there was no damage to the house or any property other than a pair of skis getting knocked over.

Of course, it was much worse in some other selected places. Worst location was the Cypress structure - that was a bad place to be.

I used to live in S California, and as all Californians will attest, earthquakes are a dialy occurrance there. Most are barely felt. Reality is the 'big one' will happen someday - we just don't know when. With a large earthquake occurring in China yesterday, the forces in the earth are making thier move. I predict a quake in S America, then N America... possibly California.

Reality is there are fissures all over this country. Heck, we got 'em here in AZ and a quake occurred here 30 years ago. So, most everyone that lives in the US is not far from a fissure and potential earthquake someday. So, sit back, relax, and sip your favorite refreshing beverage!

Thing is we have "big ones" much less often than the gulf coast has hurricanes or the mid-west has twisters and flooding so I don't think we are that bad off. When it is peaceful California is still a fabulous place to be with our little Prius' baking in the sun!

Reality is, you can expect an earthquake in a seismic zone. Better plan for it, just as its prudent to plan for a major blizzard where I live

As a born and raised Okie, I would point out that tornados that produce the kind of destruction a major earthquake produces are about as frequent as major earthquakes. Most tornados are smaller, and often don't do much except vacuum up some prairie and trees (there is more open land than developed land, so the odds are actually in favor of the thing hitting nothing). People used to ask me if I moved away from there to get away from the twisters. No, like Californians we just remained prepared. In the case of tornados, warning and tracking have much improved. Too bad they can't do the same for earthquakes.

The planet should be more afraid of something like the next eruption of the volcano that Yellowstone sits on. That would be an extinction event, and the planet is overdue for one of those.

One of my former coworkers lived down there too. His house was damaged pretty badly (chimney was knocked down) but I believe that they rebuilt it.

There were lots of folks that did rebuild there.

I took the insurance money, sold the property after the clean-up, and moved.

I was there when it was shaking, watching the ball game... with my second wife, my first natural child, and two foster kids... as well as two cousins and their kids... we were off of Highway 17 about 11 miles from Santa Cruz... there was more than one quake/shaker over those first few weeks, and the house kept crumbing with each aftershock... I was tossed up in the air more than once during the first quakes... there were folks down the road that were killed in the quake... it made me realize I wanted my family to live somewhere else.

However, in my heart, it is to this day some of the most beautiful land in all of the USofA.

I regret selling the land, even though it took me hours to drive to go to where I earned a living, some of the time I was away for days working, to keep money flowing into the banknotes and credit card payments... but... I don't regret living in the valley now. I go to visit the area several times a year when I can... but, I know better now than to live on the faults out here.

I like to visit the Bay Area, but I don't miss living there. I would have been a renter for the rest of my life at the rate that the housing prices were climbing at that time (85 - 91). I like Sac because its a day trip to the coast or a day trip to Tahoe. I also grew up in Placerville, so its closer to "home" for me.

I have lived in L.A. since 1/79. Went throught most of the quakes out here, except Sylmar in the 60's.
My home, built in '52 is still standing, I'm still standing, and I am at 1800 ft above sea level.
Whatever happens, happens. I have survival gear, food, water, medicine's, and advanced first aid training. I also have a generator conveted to propane, fuel for a week of 24/7 operation and the 7.5 kW solar system, enough radio gear that I can contact any point on this panet, from CW to advanced Data transmissions.

When it hits, as long as the house is stil standing, I will have Power, TV, Radio Communications, and most important, COLD BEER!!!

All you can do is be as prepared as possible, and not worry excessivly about it.

KK6PD, I have lived in LA, too since '71. I'm not as prepared as you but an Italian restaurant with over 3500 vintage wines is within walking distance. When the bg one hits, I will be going there to help them salvage theor cellar. How did you convert your generator to propane? I have a 7500kw gasoline unit because I have big fridge and freezer, etc.

You get a Propane conversion kit. It replaces the float bowl at the carb. It was a simple swap. Kit also came with a regulator, and gassifier to lower the pressure of the propane and make sure it entered the system as a gas. Google Propane Conversion. I did this right after Northridge. The nice thing about Propane, it does not need stabilizer like gasoline. I have 8 20 lb BBQ tanks, eack tank will run just about 24 hrs! There is no city code, unlike gasoline!
